On the last day of finals, my mother called out of nowhere.

"Aurora, what day are you coming home?"

"I'm not."

Two seconds of silence.

"You didn't come back for Founding Day either. Now you're skipping the Winter Rite too?"

"I'm at a critical stage with a formula I'm developing. My advisor wants me to stay and run some experiments."

There was no formula.

And Nathan hadn't asked me to stay.

My mother sounded a little disappointed. "But I haven't seen you in so long, and the Winter Rite is the most important day of the year for the pack.

"Could you talk to your advisor about it?"

"This formula is important. It directly affects my grade."

"All right, then."

My mother sighed. "I'll say a blessing for you at home."

I didn't answer.

Even if I had gone home, they would have looked right through me.

Next to Leanna, I'd never even catch their eye.

After finals, most of the campus emptied out.

Mia went home too, and the room was mine alone.

But I liked the quiet.

No comparisons. No being overlooked. No suffocating reminders of how differently they treated us.

The day Leanna got home, my mother posted a photo in our family chat.

The table was covered with roast venison, moonfruit bone broth, honeyed berry tarts, and a whole platter of roasted snow-hare legs. All Leanna's favorites.

Leanna replied with a heart-hands emoji.

"It feels so good to be home!"

My father added a message.

"A rare day with the whole family together!"

The whole family together.

A group with four people in it, messages from three, and a table with no place set for me.

To them, the whole family was already there.

I sat in the empty dorm room with a bowl of instant noodles in front of me.

When I finished eating, the messages were still coming.

My mother tagged my father.

"Reid, where did you go? Come back. We need a picture of our family of three. I want to post it on my page."

Family of three.

I stared at that message for an hour, but not one of them questioned it.

I took a deep breath and opened my contacts.

Scrolled to my father's name.

Pressed and held.

Delete contact.

Scrolled to my mother's name.

Pressed and held.

Delete contact.

I scrolled to Leanna's name and hesitated.

Then I deleted her anyway.

After that, I left the family chat and the pack chat, one right after the other.

I silenced the crystal and pushed it under my pillow.

Every so often, distant cheers from the town's celebration drifted into the room.

As I lay there, I suddenly thought back to when I was five.

At the Winter Rite that year, Leanna sensed her wolf.

Nothing like it had happened in the pack's history. A five-year-old, already able to feel her wolf.

Everyone was stunned. They all came to see the prodigy.

I was pushed into a corner and knocked against the living room cabinet, breaking a vase.

My mother tore into me in front of all of them.

But Leanna ran over, crouched beside me, and helped me pick up the pieces.

She said, "Don't cry, Aurora. I'm here."

That was the last moment of genuine kindness from Leanna that I could remember.

After that?

After that, Leanna's light grew more blinding, and our parents felt justified in favoring her.

And she got used to everyone revolving around her.

Maybe she didn't overlook me on purpose.

She just didn't understand that someone standing in the sun can never see into the shadows.

A huge purple firework went off outside and lit up the whole southern sky.

It wasn't for me.

From that day on, I had no home.

At that same moment, back at the Alpha's house in the Moonshadow Pack, Aurora's mother, Evelyn Hale, opened the family chat on her comm crystal.

She was about to tag Aurora and ask why she hadn't said a word all day.

But to her surprise, the group had gone from four members to three.

She tapped Aurora's old profile picture and sent a message demanding an explanation.

But all she got back was a cold line of small text:

"This user is not accepting your messages. You are not on this user's contact list. Please send a new contact request."

Evelyn froze.

A day later, my father called."Aurora."He said my name, then fell silent for a long time."Your mother had me watch that segment. The things you said, I..."He didn't finish.I heard a faint catch in his voice on the other end.I was quiet for a moment."Dad, do you know which school I'm at now?"He murmured in agreement.I went on. "My acceptance letter sat on the coffee table for 40 days. Did you ever see it?"He didn't answer."That day you said there was no room in the carriage and told me to get to school on my own."Then your family of three went north, and I came south by myself."Again I heard him choke up, more clearly this time.A long silence passed before he spoke again."I'm sorry."It was the first time he'd ever said those words to me.And then he said it again. "I'm sorry."I held the crystal as a draft swept down the hallway, making my eyes sting."All right."That was my answer. The next day, I was changing the dressings on the girl I'd rescued, Ella Brooks. Her par

After that, my days at school filled up with work again. Now that we were certified healers, Mia and I could intern at clinics designated by the academy. We were assigned to the Blackrock Pack's healing clinic.A couple rushed in one afternoon, carrying a screaming little girl."Please, someone help my daughter! There was a fire at our house! She's burned!"We gathered around her. She had only a palm-sized burn on her lower leg. Nothing serious. As we applied medicine and bandaged the burn, the girl's mother sighed with relief. "Thank the Moon Goddess. It's only a small burn."And where has Ella run off to? Is this how she looks after her sister? I'll deal with her when we get home."The little girl started crying harder."Mommy! Ella! Ella's still in the house! She pushed me out!"I didn't notice how her parents reacted. All I knew was that my head was ringing.I grabbed a blanket off one of the beds and was out the door before my mind caught up.I ran up the street. The fire wasn't f

Looking for me for so long.Right. None of them had ever opened my acceptance letter. So my family didn't even know which school I was at. Only that I was somewhere in the South."So how did you find this place?""I saw the photo and followed the reposts back to the first person who shared it."I looked at her without saying anything. She'd traced the photo through who knew how many reposts, all the way back to the first person who'd shared it.She really had been looking. But all that effort struck me as a little ridiculous."If you'd paid attention to me even once in the last 18 years, you wouldn't have had to."Her lips moved, but nothing came out.Curious students were peeking out of the other rooms. I stepped aside to let Leanna in.She came in and handed me the paper bag."I brought you something to eat. Honey cakes. You used to love them.""I never liked them. You did."At home, they only ever bought what Leanna liked.I never got a choice.Leanna froze.I poured her a glass of

When Susanna told me my photo had been selected, Mia and I were celebrating passing the healer certification exam.We were the only two students in our first-year class who had passed.Mia threw her arms around me and jumped up and down."Aurora, you're amazing!""We're both amazing."The photo had been shortlisted for a regional photography award in the South.During the break, I'd been exploring the South when I found myself on an old street.I came across a little werewolf girl standing in a corner. She stood where light met shadow, watching longingly as her parents and older sister played together. In the light, a happy family of three. In the shadows, one girl all alone. One step forward and she would have been in the light. But she stayed where she was, twisting her fingers nervously.I saw myself in her.So I pressed the shutter button before I could stop myself. After I got the girl's permission, I submitted that photo to the competition.Susanna looked at my photo and patted m

In the living room, Reid was teaching Leanna a few combat techniques.Evelyn sounded a little flustered. "Reid, Aurora... she deleted me!""What?"Reid froze mid-movement, as if he hadn't understood her.Evelyn handed him the crystal. He stared at the message for five seconds, then frowned.Reid pulled out his own crystal, found Aurora's number, and called. But the call wouldn't connect.Leanna came over with her crystal, her face pale."Aurora left both the family chat and the pack chat."Evelyn's expression shifted from confusion to disbelief, then panic. But the panic only lasted a few seconds. Then she pressed her lips together and muttered, "What's gotten into that girl now?"She seemed to be speaking to Reid and Leanna as much as to herself. "She probably deleted us by accident. She'll add us back in a couple of days."Reid shook his head too."She's been like this since she was little. Never could just come out and say what she wants."Leanna said nothing, but worry flickered in
