Chapter 2

Aвтор: Rainny Aria
Logan actually thought I'd go to him for help? He thought I'd beg someone like him—a man who ditched his wife and daughter for a mistress? A man who got our daughter killed?

Not a chance.

Logan scowled and spat, "You couldn't even give me a son. My mother said a few words, and you ran off, sulking all these years? Letting the Rice family's bloodline roam the streets—if you're not ashamed, I damn sure am."

I let out a sharp, icy laugh. So that was it—he thought my son was Lily.

But Lily had died long ago, in a hospital that was supposed to save lives.

She was barely a hundred days old when her own father drained her of blood. I'd been just one wall away, forced by Logan to wait for my poor Lily's death.

What right did he have to speak her name?

Even the sight of him felt like bad luck. Swallowing the fire in my chest, I turned to leave.

"I don't need you telling me what to do. He's not even your—"

Joann walked up, holding her daughter's hand, and urged the little girl forward.

"Gracie, say thank you to your half-sister. When you were sick, she gave you her blood."

My eyes burned. Lily's life had been reduced to something this mistress could toss out like a casual joke.

I glared at Logan, but he avoided my gaze, coughing once. "Gracie and Lily are half-sisters. They should at least meet."

Then he scooped Gracie into his arms and brushed a loose strand of hair from her forehead with such tenderness it made my stomach turn.

"Go on, Gracie, say hello to your half-sister. When she comes home, teach her a girl's manners. Show her what kind of dresses a girl should wear. Don't let her look like some beggar and embarrass our family."

When he turned back to me, his voice turned razor-sharp. "Can't even bother to greet me? Look what you've taught Lily. No damn manners at all."

Joann slipped her arm through his and kissed his cheek.

"Don't be mad, Logan. We all know where Bella comes from. No one taught her any better. Just let it go."

My nose stung. Something inside me snapped.

"I didn't know a woman who seduces another woman's husband could lecture anyone about manners."

Her eyes reddened, and her voice trembled with practiced sorrow.

"I'm sorry, Bella. I know you hate that Logan chose me back then. But could he really just watch his own child die?

"And besides, Gracie was supposed to be born first. If you're that angry, take it out on me. But don't brand Logan as a cheater. He doesn't deserve that."

Logan raised his hand as if to strike me, but when he saw the stubborn set of my jaw, he stopped. "Why do you have to bully Joann? I already feel guilty enough for not marrying her back then."

"Oh? And did you marry me? That marriage certificate… wasn't it fake?"

The memory tightened my throat, but with my son beside me, I forced back the tears.

Back then, I'd gone abroad to steady myself, but in a moment of collapse, I called Logan. What I heard was their breathless moans, their gasps, and their passion.

When it was over, I cried into the phone. "Logan, why are you doing this to me?"

His voice was cold. "Who the hell do you think you are, to question me?"

Feeling that same despair now, I let out a bitter laugh. "I found out our marriage certificate was fake. Logan, do you know how hopeless I felt when I found out?"

He started to explain, but Joann cut in, "You were going to divorce anyway. This just saved you the trouble. Logan simply didn't love you. He didn't do anything wrong."

She knew me well. She knew how to choose words that pierced straight through, while sounding like kindness.

The hunger for revenge devoured Logan's sanity. His eyes locked onto a vase on the table. Before he could think, he'd already swung it with full force into Joann's skull."You murdered my daughter!" he screamed. "You don't deserve to breathe!"Blood burst from the wound as Joann collapsed to the floor, coughing up a mouthful of blood. She pleaded weakly, "Cough… Logan, I was wrong. Please… please let me go. Lily's gone... but we still have Gracie... I can give you a son... please..."Logan's gaze fell on the large pool of blood spreading beneath her, and his expression twisted into madness."Bella and I were so deeply in love. You tore us apart. You killed our baby. YOU SHOULD BE DEAD!"Each word became another savage kick to her ribs. "You think you're fit to mother my children? You're TRASH!"Only when her chest stopped rising did he stagger back—then burst into hysterical laughter."Now you've paid! Bella will forgive me now!" He clutched his head, laughing manically. "I'll g

"And you dare speak Lily's name to me?" I spat, my voice dripping with venom. "You, Joann, and Gracie—you all owe Lily your lives! The only way you could ever atone for her death is by joining her in the grave!"Logan's hands shook violently as he scrambled to collect the fallen photographs. He saw my poor Lily in the hospital bed, eyes wide open even in death from the agony she had endured. He saw her drained of all color, her small body mottled with bruises. He saw her reduced to a handful of ashes, which I buried in my hometown.Nick's voice cut through the tension like arctic wind, "Effective immediately, the Shenton Group severs all ties with Rice Group ventures. What kind of businessman partners with a child-killer who wallows in moral sewage?"With those words, I watched the last flicker of hope die in Logan's eyes. He'd come crawling to Nick because his failing company desperately needed Shenton Group's capital to stay afloat. Now not only was that lifeline gone, but any fi

Caleb's voice was regretful. "I'm sorry, Mom. I couldn't protect you… I let them hurt you."To keep my son from carrying this as a shadow on his heart, I had my men bring in Logan, Joann, and the restaurant manager to apologize face-to-face.They were forced to their knees the moment they entered. Joann crawled forward on her hands and knees, clutching at Nick's trouser leg, sobbing."Mr. Shenton, I'm sorry! Please, spare me. I truly didn't know Bella was your wife, or that Lily was your kid."Caleb frowned. "So it's fine to bully someone just because you don't know who they are? You're not sorry at all!"When I looked up at Nick, I saw the same surprised expression mirrored back at me. We exchanged a small, knowing smile. At least this hadn't twisted my son's values—he still spoke up against those who wronged him, still stood his ground.Nick's lips curved faintly. "He's just like you."I shook my head with a smile. "More like you."The manager, already shaken from yesterda

After searching the kitchen for a while, Nick spotted a small side door. His heartbeat quickened.Pushing it open, he was met with the sight of a massive freezer in the center of the room. Inside, Caleb and I were crammed among piles of vegetables, both of us long unconscious.Logan arrived moments later, his face draining of color at the scene."M-Mr. Shenton, what's going on here?"Nick swung open the freezer door, his movements gentle as he lifted my son and me out. He brushed away the wilted vegetable leaves clinging to our bodies.Seeing Nick's tenderness, Logan trembled. How could what Bella said possibly be true? A woman he had always considered beneath him—used goods—how could she truly be the wife of Mr. Shenton?"Mr. Shenton, perhaps you're mistaken. That's my wife and daughter.""Your daughter? Who do you think you are?" Nick's gaze hardened, and with a subtle signal, his men descended on Logan, beating him until his screams filled the air.Ignoring him, Nick took m

Thinking back on the scene, the driver added, "And I also saw Madam greeting Mr. Rice and Mrs. Rice outside! How could she not be here?"Nick's face turned cold in an instant. How dare Logan deceive him! What exactly had he done to Bella? He stopped a passing waiter, his gaze falling on the watch around the man's wrist. His voice froze over. "Where did you get that watch?"The young waiter, unaccustomed to such an imposing presence, panicked and bowed repeatedly."I'm sorry, Mr. Shenton! I didn't know it was yours. I found it by the riverside on my way to work."Fumbling, he removed the watch.Nick tucked it into his jacket, fury burning beneath the surface."You mean to tell me my wife's watch just happened to be lying by the river? Where is she? Where is she now?"That watch had been a custom commission from a master craftsman when he'd confessed his love to Bella. It was one of a kind in the world, impossible to mistake. And Bella would never simply misplace it.The waiter

The host approached Nick with an obsequious smile. "Mr. Shenton, right this way, please."Recalling the voice he'd heard earlier, Nick's expression darkened with faint impatience. He glanced around. "Where's my wife? She came here two hours ago with my son.""Was it to private room 888? I didn't see your wife enter just now."Before he could press further, Logan came running over, sweat beading on his forehead. "Mr. Shenton, it's an honor to finally meet you. About that project proposal I sent over earlier, do you think we might work together? The Rice Group is the largest enterprise in Aster City. We could form a powerful alliance."Nick lifted his gaze ever so slightly, and Logan's expression instantly froze. The child standing beside Bella bore an uncanny resemblance to Mr. Shenton. Could it be that Bella had betrayed him all those years ago, and Lily was actually Nick's son?"Mr. Shenton," Logan said abruptly, "I heard you were bringing your wife and child today. We've prepar
