Chapter 2

Author: Speechy
I closed my eyes, giving up on fighting back.

'Father, I got you the evidence.

'I won't be a blemish in your life anymore.'

Suddenly, I felt light and found myself floating in the air.

As I looked down, I saw my own flesh beaten to a pulp.

The girl named Lisa James was dead, her face smashed in, while not a single part of her was left intact.

Meanwhile, the thugs left, cursing as they found nothing on my remains.

I wanted to cry, but the ghost had no tears.

Suddenly, I was pulled by a mysterious force and found myself at the grandest restaurant downtown.

The lights inside were bright and warm, and Gus was in his casuals and wearing a tender smile I'd never seen before on his face.

As he placed a crystal tiara on Nana's head, he said, "Happy birthday. Congratulations on turning eighteen."

Dressed dazzlingly in a white gown, Nana was smiling blissfully as she hugged his neck. "Thanks, Dad! You're the best!"

Gus tapped her nose lovingly. "You're a big girl now. Be more mature and… don't behave like a delinquent."

I know he wanted to say 'don't behave like Lisa', treating me like a cautionary tale even when I wasn't around to meddle with their blissful moment together.

There was a three-tiered cake on the table with the words 'Happy birthday to my beloved daughter Nana'.

Beloved daughter…

I was Gus' biological daughter, but he had never once celebrated my birthday.

He always said he was busy and had no time to go through the motions with me.

On the other hand, he had never missed any of Nana's birthdays since she came to us five years ago.

I floated beside Gus, watching as he cut a cake and peeled the shell off shrimp for Nana.

That was when his phone chimed as he received my text.

He held it up and frowned before snorting and slamming it loudly on the table.

"What's wrong?" Nana asked.

"Nothing. Just spam," Gus replied flatly.

Even my ghost cringed.

It was my final message—evidence that would help him secure a major achievement but dismissed as spam for him.

Nana smiled sweetly as she served him some lamb shank. "Calm down, Dad. Lisa just wants you to care."

Gus frowned even more. "That one? I'd be retiring if she were half the daughter you are. She's always running off, getting tattoos and into fights—what an embarrassment. And just now, she's trying to trick me by saying she's dying. I'm just so sick of her games, even if she isn't."

I saw the look of disgust on his face, but somehow, my heart didn't hurt.

After all, I was already dead, and the dead wouldn't feel heartache.

Still, I found it amusing.

If he hated me so much, then why didn't he simply strangle me to death at birth?

But he insisted on raising me to humiliate him.

Soon, I watched as Gus fed Nana and was reminded of that time I was seven and had a high fever.

He was busy with a case and bellowed on the phone, "Don't you have hands?! Can't you cook something for yourself?"

My head was muddled from the fever, and I was too short to reach above the kitchen counter.

Standing on a stool to cook, I ended up knocking over a pot of boiling water, which burned off an entire layer of my skin.

When Gus returned, he frowned and threw me a tube of ointment, snapping, "You're so clumsy. Can't even do that much?"

But now, he even carefully blew on spaghetti so it wouldn't be too hot for Nana.

As it turned out, he wasn't a bad father—he just didn't want to be a father to me.

After dinner, Gus took Nana home to the house where I lived like an outsider for eighteen years.

Stepping through the front door, they saw my mother, Wanda Locke, pacing around in the living room.

Wanda and Yorick were crying themselves hoarse in front of my grave, having learned the truth of everything including my grief and sacrifice. However, those tears meant nothing now.Gus never cried. He stood at the very front in his uniform, his medal-laden jacket having one more added to it—the one he earned in exchange for my life.He took it off and put it on top of my gravestone, saying, "This is yours, Lisa. I've earned it for you."-Eventually, everyone else left the graveyard, leaving just Gus standing there alone. It was raining again, just like the day I was killed.Gus took out his phone, the photo of him giving me a piggyback still on his screen. He called my number and put his phone in front of the gravestone. As the dialing tone rang, it turned out to be that cheerful birthday song—an ironic choice on a cold rainy day."Hey, Lisa?" he said, speaking to thin air. "I'm coming to pick you up… I won't be bringing a patrol car. I'll even give you a piggyback…"You

While both Wanda and Yorick were stunned, Gus finished with a bellow, "And you are all talking to me about the law now?!"With that, he kicked Wanda out of the way but didn't pull the trigger. However, he wasn't being soft—he saw my ghost in the air and seemed to realize something else.Putting away his gun, he called his squad. "Come to my place. Arrest Nana Smith, suspected of conspiracy to murder and drug dealing."Even as Nana collapsed limply on the floor in despair, Gus turned to leave—he had much more important things to do, as the thugs who murdered me remained unpunished. That very night, the cops tracked down the drug lord's base by reading through the microchip, leading them to an abandoned factory. But Gus didn't bring the SWAT team, instead going in alone, protected by a Kevlar vest and armed with dozens of clips.I was right behind him, watching him slip into the building just like a ghost. He didn't apply strategy and never ducked for cover—not that he cared if h

It was a pawn shop receipt kept in my corpse's pocket, and it read:[Luxury handbag, $3,000—seller: Nana Smith.]I bought the bag days ago before I died to clean up Nana's mess, and I kept the receipt so that I could defend myself. That chance simply never came.Flinging the receipt at Nana's face, Gus snapped, "Then tell me what this is?!"Seeing the receipt, Nana's legs buckled and she fell on her knees. "It was a mistake… I was just feeling vain and didn't want you to get mad… Lisa is your daughter anyway, and you'd just yell at her a little. If you knew it was me, you'd chase me out…"As Gus stared at the adopted daughter he'd spoiled for five years, he was suddenly left wondering how evil the heart beneath that sweet appearance was.She would do nothing as Lisa was thrown out of the house just so that he wouldn't get mad at her, when Lisa was being yelled at and beaten up?"You didn't want me to get mad?" he asked, his voice as cold as ice. "I broke a broom beating her and

Shaking his head, Ian said, "Those aren't from recreational drug use either."Gus' head jerked up. "Impossible! I watched her inject herself!"Ian didn't answer, merely taking a sample and conducting a lab test, and the results were soon out."Cheap anti-inflammatories and painkillers," Ian explained. "She had also recovered from a ton of injuries including internal bleeding and broken bones, all beginning from three years ago. It seems she never went to the hospital and simply treated herself with what she could get."Three years ago was when Gus started investigating the drug lord and also the moment when I started behaving like a 'delinquent'.Time and time again, I took the blows of revenge meant for him and was left half-dead by thugs more than once. But when I got home, he'd be snapping at me, "Where have you been this time?! Street fights now?! "And those holes on your wrist—doing drugs, are we?!"Leave! We don't need your nonsense here!"However, he could not have bee

Gus collapsed to his knees in the puddle, all strength drained out of him as he could not stand up at all.Disbelief and despair had struck him all at once, sending his mental fortitude crumbling. That was when Phil came running with his laptop. "We got a read on the microchip, chief—it's all ledgers of the drug lord's transactions, along with a voice recording."Gus' fingers were still shaking as he took the headphones and pressed the play button.I floated behind him, curious as to what I'd left behind myself. It was first the noise of the rain, and then I was being audibly struck while I grunted in pain.A man's voice soon spoke. "Hand it over, and we'll let you live."I was gasping, my voice weak. "Dream on."There were more hits, and Gus cringed. Soon, my phone rang while recording, and a cheerful birthday song could be heard.Gus then heard himself say, "Vermin like you dying is simply good riddance anyway."And in the recording, the thugs were all laughing."You hea

As it was murder and a gruesome one, the case was quickly brought up to the detectives.Hence, Gus had barely sat down in his office when Phil Larkin, who worked in forensics, rushed in, his face pale. "Chief… We have a situation."Gus was sipping tea as he asked nonchalantly, "What's the panic? Is the world ending?"Phil's voice was quivering. "They found a female body on West Street… initial hypothesis: beaten and stabbed to death. Estimated time of death: last night…"Gus frowned. "Just stick to procedure. Confirm the deceased's identity."Phil gulped, avoiding Gus' stare as he continued, "And… she had something.""What?""A silver necklace and a phone… The wallpaper is a photo of you with her."Clang!Gus' mug slipped out of his hand, shattering into pieces on the floor.A silver necklace? He had bought one for me when I was ten, calling it a lucky charm. And I had always used a photo of us when I was five and he gave me a piggyback as my phone wallpaper. That was the
