Chapter 5

Author: Rui Rui
At the morning department meeting, I sat at the head of the long table, but I felt like I was sitting on broken glass.

I could feel their stares—pity, curiosity, and barely concealed schadenfreude.

Halfway through the meeting, my assistant Jenna leaned in and slid her phone across to me, whispering: "Ms. Phillips... you might want to see this."

I frowned and looked at the screen.

It was Vanessa's post. A fresh Instagram update.

Nine photos. All boastful shots of the new house.

Marble kitchen. Balcony with mountain views. A selfie of her sprawled across the master bed, grinning like a maniac.

The caption read:

[So grateful for my in-laws' generous gift. Finally have a place I can call home! Some people don't appreciate what they have and just walk away... oh well, their loss!]

The comments were vicious.

[OMG congrats babe!!]

[Your in-laws are angels!]

[Unlike some people who think they're too good to spend time with family.]

I even spotted an old classmate's comment: [Wait, isn't this Sandra's family? Where is she?]

Vanessa replied: [Oh, she's too busy being a big-shot executive to care about us little people.]

My hands were shaking. I handed the phone back to Jenna, my face unreadable.

"Let's continue the meeting."

But inside, I was screaming.

She was broadcasting to the world that I, Sandra Phillips, had been kicked out by my own family.

Later, in the break room, I overheard two colleagues chatting.

"Did you hear? Sandra got kicked out by her family. The new house doesn't even have a room for her."

"No way. But she makes good money."

"Doesn't matter. Her parents are old-school. Sons get everything. She got nothing, and now she's not even talking to them."

"No wonder her brother showed up this morning. Damn. That's rough."

I froze, my coffee cup trembling in my hand.

That afternoon, a client I'd been working on for months called.

"Ms. Phillips, we might need to put our collaboration on hold."

My heart sank. "Is there an issue with the proposal?"

He hesitated. "No, the proposal is excellent. It's just... we've heard you're dealing with some personal matters. We're concerned it might affect the project."

I opened my mouth, but nothing came out.

My family drama was ruining my career.

After hanging up, I slumped like a puppet with cut strings.

My phone rang again. Sienna.

Her voice was furious: "Sandra! I saw Vanessa's post! I'm on my way over right now, I'm going to—"

"Sienna, don't—"

She hung up.

Thirty minutes later, she called back, her voice trembling.

"Sandra, I went to that house. Vanessa wouldn't let me in. She screamed at me in front of the neighbors, called me a crazy stalker! It was so humiliating!"

My heart ached for her, but I was completely powerless.

"Come back, Sienna. She's not worth it."

"But they can't do this to you!"

But they already had.

I couldn't even understand why—why did they keep hurting their own daughter?

For the first time in my life, I had no idea what to do next.

Maybe it was answered prayers. Maybe it was a final flicker of light. But against all odds—against every doctor's prognosis—Mom stabilized.A month later, she came home.I moved back into that house—the house that held so much love and so much misunderstanding. I quit everything to be by her side.I learned to make soup. Learned to give massages. Learned to tell jokes when chemo made her miserable.I threw everything I had into making up for what I'd done. One day, Dad called me into his study."Your mom's treatment costs money. And you can't just waste away here forever."He handed me a bank card."This is your startup capital. Go do what you've always wanted. Don't be afraid to fail. We'll always be here."I didn't refuse.I used that money to start my own marketing consultancy.Dad didn't interfere. He just quietly introduced me to every contact he'd built over a lifetime. On opening day, Garrett and Vanessa came.Vanessa stood in front of me, holding a big fruit basket, her eyes re

I opened the first page. Mom's handwriting:[June 3rd. Sunny.Got the test results. Confirmed. Stage IV pancreatic cancer. The doctor says I have less than a year.I didn't cry. I completely broke down.I dropped my luggage, shoved through the crowd, and sprinted toward the information desk.I didn't even look back at Garrett, still on his knees.Only one thought hammered in my head: Apologize to Mom and Dad!"Excuse me!""Move aside!"Passengers parted, and I ran down the path they cleared.Tears wouldn't stop.Sandra, you selfish bastard. You stupid, selfish fool. How could you do this to them? Then I saw them—Mom and Dad, standing by the information desk—and my heart leaped. I opened my mouth to call out."Mom—"But the word barely left my lips before she crumpled backward, just ten feet away."MOM!!! "Dad lunged to catch her before she hit the ground, but he wasn't strong enough. They both went down.My heart stopped.I ran over and gathered Mom into my arms. Her face was white as paper. Garrett's face went red. Full of regret."That was my fault!" He slapped his own cheek."I took that family photo and wanted to touch it up on my phone—brighten it a little. I accidentally deleted your part and stupidly saved it.""Mom was furious when she saw it. She told me to fix it and send her the right one. But when I texted it... I sent the wrong file. The broken one. Her eyes aren't great—she didn't notice—so she forwarded it to you. She thought it would make you happy, to see how happy everyone was..."I covered my face, a broken sob tearing from my throat.A stupid mistake. Badly timed accident. And it destroyed me."Then Dad... why did he..." I couldn't finish the sentence. The word was too painful."Dad pulled the funding because he knew you always wanted to start your own business, but you were too scared to leave that high-paying job.""He said you're too stubborn. Unless he pushed you, you'd never take that step. He pulled out to push you—to leave you no choice but to ch

"What... is this?" My voice came out cracked.Garrett looked up at me, tears still flowing."Sandra, that house. The whole house. It's yours.""Mom and Dad bought it for you. Only you.""The rest of us... we're just your tenants."Tenants? The word detonated in my brain."That's impossible..."Garrett grabbed a stack of bank statements from the floor and shoved them into my hands."See for yourself."I took them. It came with my paycheck, so I never questioned it.Garrett's voice cracked: "That's Mom and Dad's pension. Their life savings. They said you worked too hard, they didn't want you to struggle. But they knew you'd never accept it, so... they gave it to you secretly."My hands were shaking so badly I could barely hold the papers."Why didn't they tell me?""Because you're too stubborn, Sandra. Sandra Phillips. My name. Echoing through the entire airport.I froze, certain I'd misheard. Then I turned toward the information desk.My heart sank. They were there. My family.Dad was animatedly talking to airport staff. He looked like he'd aged ten years overnight—hair completely white, shoulders hunched.Mom sat in a chair nearby, face buried in her hands, sobbing, her eyes swollen like walnuts.Garrett was showing my photo to passersby: "Excuse me, have you seen this woman? She's my sister."Allen crouched on the ground, redialing my number over and over, muttering: "Sandra, please. Pick up..."I stared at the scene, feeling... nothing. What was this? A performance?Who were they putting on a show for?Wasn't ruining me enough?
