Chapter 1 The Home I No Longer Had

Autor: Roewan
I wanted to storm inside and ask them why they had lied to me and how long this had been going on.

But the moment Vincent looked up, I fled in panic, as though I were the one who had no business being seen, an intruder spying on someone else's happiness.

I didn't stop until I had run out of the hospital. My heart felt lodged in my throat, making me so sick I thought I was going to throw up.

Just then, Siobhan texted me. "I'm sorry, Ginny. I forgot that place closed down ages ago. I'm sure you had to rush back overnight without getting any sleep. Go home and get some rest."

I laughed bitterly.

Go home? Where? Did I even have a home anymore?

I always believed I had a room forever in my mother's house. The house Vincent and I shared was registered solely in my name. And I had the password to Siobhan's front door, too.

She once told me, "My home is your home—no. This is our home."

Two months into our marriage, Vincent was assigned to a classified project expected to last at least two years. I spent most of that time at Siobhan's place. She used to joke that the two of us looked more like newlyweds than Vincent and I did.

Once, I returned from a two-week business trip and found a condom tucked between the cushions of her sofa. I was shocked and teased her about when she had gotten a boyfriend.

Her face immediately turned scarlet, and she stammered, "No, he's not my boyfriend… It's just…"

"Anyway, there's no way I can be with him. Ginny, if I did something immoral, would you hate me?" she asked.

Without hesitation or regard for principle, I stood firmly by her side. If she didn't want to tell me who he was, I respected that. I just didn't want her to get hurt.

Six months ago, when I found out she was pregnant and had decided to keep the baby, I was shocked and worried.

But the first thing I said was still meant to reassure her. "It's okay. If you're having the baby, I'll raise it with you."

She had been so moved that she choked up, apologizing profusely.

Only now did I realize that I had misunderstood everything. Worse, the man she had refused to name was actually my husband.

The truth had come back around like a boomerang and struck me squarely between the eyes.

I went back to my mother's house, only to find that the lock had been replaced with a fingerprint lock at some point. I couldn't get inside.

Half an hour later, my mother returned. When she saw me sitting on the floor outside, she unlocked the door and scolded me as she walked in.

"Was your phone dead? Why didn't you reply to Shivvy on WhatsApp? She was worried you hadn't seen her message and had gone to the college town for nothing. She even called you several times."

I stared at her slightly stooped back, feeling as though I were looking at a stranger.

"If you're back too, who's taking care of her at the hospital?" I asked.

Her hand paused for a second as she changed her shoes. "The postpartum nurse we'd arranged had arrived, and there were nurses at the hospital, too. You don't need to worry about it."

With that, she went into the bathroom to freshen up.

Evidently, my concern was unnecessary to them. The moment they heard that Siobhan had gone into labor early, I rushed back to see her, only to become a burden.

Just then, my mother's phone rang in her purse, so I took it out.

The lock screen had already been changed to a photo of the baby. Before that, it had been a silly picture of her and Siobhan making faces together.

The password was always Siobhan's birthday—and also the anniversary of her mother's death.

On Siobhan's 12th birthday, I had suddenly developed a stomachache after eating the birthday cake. Her mother had frantically driven me to the hospital, but on the way there, she got into a car accident. She died despite the doctors' efforts to save her.

The adults had all comforted me and told me it wasn't my fault, but I always thought I owed Siobhan a mother.

As such, my mother took her in as her goddaughter, showering her with affection and treating her far better than she treated me.

Whenever the seasons changed, she bought Siobhan new clothes while I wore the ones Siobhan had outgrown.

If my mother had freshly squeezed orange juice especially for Siobhan, I wouldn't be allowed to drink it first. If there was one last piece of spare rib, it was always for her.

For Siobhan's 16th birthday, my mother gave her a pearl necklace. I got nothing more than a bowl of buttered noodles.

I had always thought all of that was perfectly natural and never once thought that it was unfair.

Besides, Siobhan simply had a better personality than I did. She was considerate and attentive, and she always knew exactly what to say. It was only natural that my mother liked her more.

I had kept giving way until, in the end, everyone had simply grown accustomed to it.

  • A Life Without Looking Back   Chapter 10 The Last Goodbye

After I turned my phone back on, my mother messaged me on WhatsApp every day, telling me about the progress of her treatment. "I won't become a burden to you," she said.Siobhan also kept persistently asking to meet, sending me countless photos of her son."He looks a lot like Vincent, doesn't he?""Leo recognizes his Aunt Ginny. He smiles as soon as he sees your picture. Don't you want to hold him?""Ginny, I miss you too. Can we talk?"Vincent and I were divorced, which was another milestone victory for her. Even if Vincent hated her now, they had a child together. They could never truly cut ties.I blocked her, but she simply used a new number to message me again."I'm sorry, Ginny, but people are selfish, aren't they? Whatever I want, I'll always fight to get it.""I heard you and your junior are together now. Congratulations. He's richer than Vincent and younger, too. Does that make me your matchmaker? I'd like to be invited to your future wedding, please."Reading them

Vincent came, but he wanted to bargain and negotiate the terms."Ginny, it's all my fault. I know I hurt you, and I know you won't forgive me. I'll agree to the divorce, but could we wait until Mom finishes her surgery? She can't take another shock right now.""Those are two separate matters," I said coldly. "Does staying married really increase her chances of recovering? Did you ever consider before how much of a shock all of this would be for me?""I'm sorry, Ginny. I truly regret it. I should've stayed calm." The hurt on his face was evident. "Please, just give me one chance to make up for what I did.""Are you going in or not?" I cut him off. "Don't waste my time."He shook his head. "Ginny, please. Could you wait a little longer?""I'll have it done alone then."I turned to leave, but he grabbed me. "Ginny, we've been in love for years—don't you feel even a little reluctant to let me go?"The warmth in my eyes turned even colder. "Love? You don't get to talk about love."

  • A Life Without Looking Back   Chapter 8 Just as You Wanted

I knocked on my mother's door. When she saw me, she froze, staring at me as though she didn't recognize me. Then again, I had cut my hair, and my skin had been tanned by the sun. I looked completely different from before. She raised her hand as if to slap me, but it stopped in midair before finally falling weakly against me. "Genevieve, you actually came back! Why didn't you just die out there?"She started crying, but I remained unmoved. In fact, I almost wanted to laugh. "Sorry to disappoint you. I'm still alive."She seemed to come back to her senses and immediately turned around to grab her phone and call Vincent. "Ginny is back!"Half an hour later, Vincent came rushing through the door, panting for breath. He stared at me for several seconds before pulling me into his arms. "Ginny, thank God you're okay. Thank God…" His voice choked with emotion, his entire body trembling with excitement.I pushed him away. "Vincent, I've returned to get a divorce."His whole body stif

  • A Life Without Looking Back   Chapter 7 A Reason to Return

I had been living on a small island in the Pacific for half a year. The stomach cancer had been a misdiagnosis, but the week I had spent living in fear and uncertainty had been very real. I hadn't wanted to make them worry, so I carried it all by myself. I had even thought about what I could do to keep them from grieving too much if the illness couldn't be treated and I died.Alas, it had all been me making a fuss over nothing. The book covering my face was suddenly lifted, and the sunlight was blinding. As soon as I saw the man's face, I sat upright. "You didn't say you were coming this weekend."He quirked a brow. "Shall I leave, then?"I couldn't answer that, so I changed the subject. "Have you eaten?"He gave me a helpless smile. "No. I'm hungry now. Make me something."I nodded and headed into the kitchen while he lay down in my spot and continued reading my book.Jace Carre was my junior at university, one year below me. I had gotten him into the company through an inte

  • A Life Without Looking Back   Chapter 6 The Price of One Mistake

  • A Life Without Looking Back   Chapter 5 A Taste of Her Pain

At the hospital, Vincent received a package. Inside was a diagnostic report, and the words printed across it were painfully stark."Genevieve Mansfield… Gastric tumor… Suspected malignancy…"On the other sheet of paper were only two lines written in trembling, heavy strokes, the pressure of the pen so great that it had torn through the back of the page. "Don't bother searching for me. Let me die in peace.""You may hate me, but I hate you even more."Vincent's hands trembled furiously. He closed his eyes, suddenly remembering how Genevieve's vomit had seemed to contain traces of blood. His heart clenched painfully."Vincent?" Genevieve's mother, Mindy Davis, came out. "What's wrong? Have you finished the discharge paperwork?"Siobhan was being discharged that day and would be going home with a private postpartum care team.Vincent immediately crumpled the papers in his hand, making sure Mindy couldn't see them. "It's something from work. I'll take care of the paperwork now."
