Chapter 3

Author: Mountain Dreamer
There was silence on the other end of the line for two seconds.

Elina Conrad asked, "Have you thought this through?"

"Yes."

"I'll come to South Chilton tomorrow."

"Give me three more days."

Elina didn't press me for an explanation. She simply told me that the Callahan Group would hold a shareholders' meeting in three days.

I'd been away from Port Red for too long, and the Callahan family's collateral branches had already begun interfering in the group's affairs.

As long as I returned on time, the shares my father had temporarily placed under trust management, along with my inheritance rights, would be transferred back to me.

If I missed this meeting, things would become much more complicated.

"Bridger, I'll wait for you at South Chilton Airport in three days." Her voice remained composed, but I could hear the excitement she was struggling to contain.

"All right."

After hanging up, I opened my computer and drafted a statement announcing my retirement from the entertainment industry.

When I finished the last word, I didn't send it immediately. I needed to return to the set one more time.

The for this film was the final work left behind by my late acting mentor, Harlem Santos.

Two years earlier, I'd brought the to Zara. I'd personally selected Garrick, contacted the production team, and worked alongside the screenwriter through seven revisions.

I could give up the male lead, but I couldn't let Harlem's final work be ruined without explanation.

The next morning, I arrived on set wearing a mask. The swelling in my face hadn't gone down, and all I could hear in my right ear was a muffled noise.

Every eye around me turned toward me. Some people looked sympathetic. Others were waiting to see me make a fool of myself.

I headed for my old dressing room, only to be stopped by a production assistant.

"Bridger, this dressing room now belongs to Kyson." He pointed toward a room in the far corner. "Your space is over there."

It was an abandoned storage room piled high with prop boxes and broken lighting stands.

I didn't argue. I went inside and waited for twenty minutes.

The next scene was about to begin, but the makeup artist still hadn't arrived. I got up to look for her and found her standing beside Kyson, touching up his makeup.

Kyson saw me in the mirror and turned around with a smile. "I'm sorry, Bridger. I forgot to let you know. Zara assigned your makeup artist to me. From now on, she only works on my makeup."

He patted the cosmetics spread across the table. "These are mine, too. She said my face is precious and deserves the best products."

His assistant tossed several cardboard boxes at my feet. Inside were a few tubes of cheap foundation and opened eyeshadow palettes.

Kyson's smile widened. "Zara also said that with your experience, the products you use won't affect your acting."

Zara knew how sensitive my skin was. In the past, even when replacing a single concealer, she'd had someone check the ingredients first.

Now she'd given Kyson all the products I'd grown accustomed to using and handed me a pile of cheap makeup instead.

I was about to leave when I noticed a blue notebook lying in front of Kyson. It was the acting notebook I'd compiled for this role. Inside were character biographies, dialogue choices, and the final notes Harlem had left me before he died.

I reached for the notebook.

Kyson immediately pressed his hand against the other side. "Bridger, this is mine. My name is written inside the cover. Zara already gave it to me."

Right in front of me, he flipped to one of the pages.

"She said you'd spent two years preparing for this role. If I study your notes, I can save myself a lot of trouble."

The director, Garrick McCoy, approached with a in his hand and happened to hear those words. "Bridger, since you can't play the male lead anymore, helping guide a newcomer is still a way of taking responsibility for the film. Kyson just tried a scene using your approach, and it worked really well."

I looked at Garrick. "So when he copies my acting choices, that makes him talented?"

Garrick's expression turned uncomfortable. "We're all part of the same production. There's no need to draw such clear lines."

Kyson released the notebook and deliberately put on a wounded expression. "If you can't bear to part with it, you can have it back. I just think it's a waste for something this good to belong to someone who's only playing a supporting role."

I pulled the notebook back. "You can take my role and my dressing room, but you can't take what's inside my head."

Kyson's smile froze for a moment. He signaled to his assistant with his eyes.

A revised was thrown at my feet.

"Bridger, don't rush off just yet. Garrick just made some changes. You should take a look."

I opened the .

All the original standout scenes belonging to the male lead had been transferred to Kyson. My character had been rewritten into a vicious supporting antagonist who envied the male lead and repeatedly tried to sabotage him.

Dozens of pages of scenes between my character and the female lead had been deleted entirely.

Garrick walked up to me. "Don't just stand there. We're shooting your drowning scene next."

I jerked my head up.

When I was a child, I'd accidentally fallen into a lake and nearly drowned. Ever since then, whenever water rose above my chest, my heart raced and I struggled to breathe.

Zara knew about this. That's why every contract I'd signed explicitly prohibited filming any kind of drowning scene.

"This scene wasn't in the original ."

"It was just added." Garrick sounded impatient. "Kyson was worried you didn't have enough screen time, so he specifically asked for this scene on your behalf."

I flipped to the last page.

Beside the drowning scene, someone had added a line in red ink.

[The actor must perform the scene personally. No stunt doubles permitted.]

Elina took my hand, and together we walked back down the red carpet. As we exchanged rings, I noticed that her hand was trembling slightly.I leaned closer and whispered, "What are you nervous about?"She pressed her lips together. "I'm afraid you'll regret this. I'm afraid you'll see her and change your mind."I froze for a moment. "You knew she'd come?""I guessed.""Then why weren't you afraid just now?"Elina looked into my eyes. "I was. My hands were shaking. But after they took her away, you didn't even look at her."She slipped the ring onto my finger. Her touch was so gentle, as though she were afraid of hurting me. "That's when I stopped being afraid."The wedding ended, and the guests gradually dispersed.I sat in the bridal suite, taking the lapel pin off my suit.Elina knocked and came in. She'd changed out of her wedding dress and was wearing comfortable clothes. Her hair was slightly mussed. She stood by the door and took a deep breath, as though she'd been pr

  • A Love Buried in Ashes   Chapter 17

On our wedding day, the first snow of the winter fell over Port Red.The Callahan and Conrad families were joining together through marriage. Just the names of the two families side by side were enough to keep high society talking for the next three years. The hotel's ballroom was filled with white roses and baby's breath. Three thousand flowers lined the path from the entrance to the end of the red carpet. The guest list was packed with leading figures from every industry. The names alone in the guest book could have filled a history of modern business.I took my mother's arm and walked step by step toward Elina. She stood at the end of the red carpet, wearing a pristine white wedding gown, her long hair pinned up and her makeup immaculate. When she saw me, her gaze suddenly softened, like a beam of light falling across a sheet of ice. Her throat moved as though she were holding something back.I walked up to her.She reached out and took the hand my mother placed in hers.My

The wedding was set for a month later.Throughout that month, Elina came to the Callahan estate every day.Sometimes she brought my mother her favorite flowers. Other times, she kept my father company while he played chess. My father was a terrible chess player, but he had a terrible temper, too. Taking back a move was practically a daily occurrence. Elina always pretended not to notice and even praised him for making a brilliant move.I had to bite back laughter beside them until my stomach hurt. One evening, Elina arrived earlier than usual. She was carrying two cups of coffee."One sugar, triple shot." She handed me one of the cups.I took it and had a sip. "How did you know I like a triple-shot?""You posted about it on social media once. There was a picture of coffee, and your caption said, 'Coffee without a triple shot has no soul.'""That post was from two years ago."Elina took a sip of her own drink and fell silent, but her ears turned red again.I'd noticed that El

In the days that followed, the Callahan family's retaliation came swiftly and quietly. There were no public statements, no messages exchanged through the media. It was like a silent blade, cutting into Monroe Media's vital interests one strike at a time.Within three days, the Callahan Group terminated two major partnership projects with Monroe Media. The banks that worked with the company reassessed its business risks. Three of its core advertisers terminated their contracts at the same time.Investigations were also launched into Monroe Media's unauthorized use of an artist's account and its coercion of an actor into performing dangerous scenes.Zara was overwhelmed. Only then did she understand who the Callahan family of Port Red truly was.A week later, the Monroe family held an emergency internal meeting. The decision was to expel Zara from the family. The official reason was dressed up in respectable language: [Due to personal conduct that has seriously damaged the family'

I sat on the plane, watching the lights of South Chilton recede through the window."Elina.""Hmm?""Thank you for coming to South Chilton to pick me up tonight.""Of course. You're my fiance." She said it in a matter-of-fact tone, as casually as if she were commenting on the weather. But I noticed the tips of her ears turning faintly red.For some reason, I felt an enormous sense of relief. At last, I had someone I could lean on, at least for a little while.I still had no idea where this marriage would lead, but for now, she was on my side. That was enough."Does your wrist still hurt?" Elina suddenly asked.I instinctively tucked my hand into my sleeve. "No."She said nothing. Instead, she took a tube of cream from her coat pocket and handed it to me.I looked at it. It was for bruises. "You carry this around with you?""I prepared it before leaving." She paused. "I guessed she might not let you leave peacefully."I stared at her for a moment. "You knew she'd come to th

The Callahan family of Port Red, the undisputed most powerful family in the city. For countless people, it was a destination they could only dream of reaching. All the color drained from Zara's face."That's impossible. He can't be part of the Callahan family. If he's an heir to the Callahan fortune, why would he become an actor?"She suddenly looked up at me. "Why didn't you tell me sooner? If you'd told me earlier, how could I have...""Cheated?" I finished for her.Zara was speechless. The corners of my mouth lifted slightly. "Zara, are you saying you cheated because you thought I had no powerful family backing me? If you'd known I was the Callahan heir, you wouldn't have dared."I laughed. "You weren't afraid of hurting me. You were afraid of the consequences."Zara opened her mouth, but no words came out."Back then, you said that people who looked down on actors were only exposing the darkness inside themselves. Now I'm giving those words right back to you."I didn't lo
