Chapter 2

Author: Sweet Potato And Pumpkin
When the police arrived and subdued the attacker, they found me collapsed in a pool of blood just outside the consultation room.

One officer shouted in panic, "Where's the doctor? A pregnant woman is bleeding out here. Why isn't anyone helping her?"

At that moment, I was freezing cold and teetering on the edge of death.

Hearing the commotion, Maxwell stepped out of the room and declared self-righteously, "Officer, don't bother with her. She's just faking it to gain sympathy. Otherwise, why would she collapse just in front of me?"

The police officer's eyes widened in disbelief, as if looking at an idiot.

"I'm a professional detective. She's bleeding greatly. Do you really think I can't tell the difference between real blood and fake blood?"

His voice was loud. More people started gathering in the corridor.

Maxwell hated being the center of gossip. He lifted his foot and kicked my stomach, which had long since gone numb from pain.

"Natalie, the police are here! Aren't you embarrassed? How long are you going to keep up this act?"

I had no strength left from the blood loss. But the moment someone touched my stomach, I instinctively wrapped my arms around it to protect it.

In my blurred consciousness, I could no longer remember that I'd taken that knife for Karina, and the baby was surely already gone. I slumped to one side and fell to the ground.

Someone helped me up, covering their mouth in disbelief. "Oh my! Isn't this Dr. Shepard? Someone help her! Dr. Conner, she's your wife!"

Maxwell remained unmoved and scoffed. "Natalie, you've hired quite a few extras, haven't you? Do you think you can waste the Conner family's money just like that?"

Leaning against the cold wall, I closed my eyes in despair.

Did Maxwell even realize that our baby was gone?

If I survived this, I'd never want to see him again in this lifetime.

The police kept urging him to save me, but Maxwell continued to refuse. He even mocked the police, saying I'd bribed them too.

Infuriated, the officer pulled out his phone to call another hospital for an ambulance.

Just then, Karina walked out.

"Natalie, you're wasting medical resources and police manpower. Aren't you even a little ashamed? Just get up. I won't hold you responsible anymore.

Maxwell's gaze softened with affection. "Karina, you're still too kind. You don't need to reason with someone like her."

Then his face darkened as he barked an order, "Security, drag this troublemaker to the storage room. No one opens that door without my permission!"

The officer was shocked. "You can't do that! That's illegal detention!"

Maxwell didn't care. "She's my wife. How is it detention? She's gotten too out of hand. It's time she learned a lesson."

At his command, two security guards came over and roughly yanked me up.

The pain from the gaping wound made me scream.

That was when Molly Kent, my best friend, rushed in after getting the police call. The moment she saw the knife stuck in my abdomen, tears instantly streamed down her face.

"Maxwell, are you out of your damn mind? You're just going to watch her die? Are you trying to kill her?'"

Molly was also a doctor and worked at a different hospital.

After quickly assessing my condition, she immediately signaled others to lift me onto a gurney. As I finally let out a sigh of relief, Maxwell blocked our path again.

"You're not taking her anywhere. She hasn't even apologized to Karina for hurting her."

Molly glanced at Karina, whose cheeks were rosy and looked completely unharmed.

She immediately lost her temper. The two started shouting at each other.

Lying on the gurney, I found that my heart was already too numb from pain.

Maxwell, we'd been married for seven years. Couldn't we just part peacefully? Did I have to lose our child and my life too?

Suddenly, his shadow loomed over me.

He strode forward and said, "Alright, since none of you believe me, let's find out whether the knife pierced her stomach or a fake blood pack!"

He gave me a mocking smile. "Natalie, I gave you plenty of chances. You're the one who threw them away."

With that, he reached out, gripped the knife handle, and prepared to pull it out.

After hearing everything, I felt a sense of satisfaction. She'd killed Lydia, my child, and two innocent patients. Even if she died ten thousand times, it still wouldn't be enough to account for the four lives she had taken.I didn't let it distract me for long. I shifted my focus back to my medical studies. However, peace was hard to come by when trouble kept knocking.Maxwell suddenly paid a visit to me. I hadn't seen him for six months. It was just before Christmas. I was shopping at the supermarket with a few classmates, talking about throwing a small party. He stood there in the middle of the crowd. The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up as he rushed toward me.I didn't run. I had never owed him anything or done anything wrong. I wasn't the one at fault.Maxwell stopped about three feet away, hesitant to get any closer. The man I remembered as tall and composed now looked thin, haggard, and lifeless. His eyes were pitiful, like a stray dog that had been abandoned.Anyone

I hadn't heard Karina's name in a long time. However, that didn't mean I'd forgotten her. She was the one who caused the death of my child. So if she finally got what she deserved, I was glad to hear it.On the other end of the line, Molly eagerly began to recount the story. "Do you remember that around the time you went abroad, the police were trying to arrest Karina?"I nodded. "Yes, I remember."Back then, I'd just gathered the evidence and hadn't even had time to report her before I was seriously injured and hospitalized. In the end, it was Maxwell who reported her first."That homewrecker, Karina, truly had some tricks up her sleeve. She couldn't handle the pressure of being hunted, but she wasn't willing to rot in prison either. So she hired a smuggler to sneak her out of the country."Molly started to tell the tale of Karina's recent life. Before leaving, she sold off the three luxury cars Maxwell had gifted her. During the years he spoiled her, she had reaped quite a

People said alcohol brought out the truth.Even if Maxwell once had feelings for me, they were as light as a breeze. All it took was a few words from Karina to blow them away.My hospitalization was indeed caused by her manipulation. But if Maxwell hadn't blindly trusted her, things wouldn't have ended up like this.Neither of them were innocent.I took a cab back to the villa where Maxwell and I had lived for seven years, and packed up all my belongings. Some were clothes and gifts Maxwell bought me during the first two years of our marriage. Others were decorations and supplies I had added to the house. The things that truly belonged to me were few.I didn't take any of them with me. Instead, I had the housekeeper haul it all out and burn it.All those items, carrying seven years of my painful and joyful memories, vanished in a blaze. Just like my feelings for Maxwell, they were completely burned away.He rushed home just as I was tossing our wedding album into the fire."N

My injuries were severe. I was laid up in the hospital for nearly two months before I fully recovered.During those two months, Maxwell put aside his hospital duties and came to see me every day.Every time Molly saw him, she'd mock him mercilessly. He had always been proud and arrogant, but he tolerated it all just for a chance to see me.However, I never once opened the door for him.Molly knew how much I used to love him. She warned me, "If you get back together with him, I swear I'll cut ties with you!"I nodded. "Don't worry. I asked for a divorce the moment I woke up."She frowned. "Looking at how persistent he is, it doesn't seem like he'll quietly agree to a divorce.""It's fine. I'll sue and go through the legal process."He left me to die after I was stabbed in the hospital. There were plenty of witnesses. Someone would be willing to testify for me.On the day I was discharged, Molly had surgery and couldn't see me off.A nurse accompanied me instead. Just as we ex

Maxwell flipped through the pages of the old case file. His face grew darker with each turn. When I woke up again, I was extremely weak. "Darling, you're finally awake!"I turned my head to see Maxwell by the bedside, eyes lit up with joy.He reached out eagerly to hug me, but pulled back at the last moment. Instead, he extended his hand cautiously to hold mine.I immediately pulled away. "Are you unhappy I didn't die? Trying to get revenge for Karina again?" My voice was cold.Maxwell's face stiffened, his eyes filled with deep apology. "Darling, don't be like this. I know you're angry. Yell at me if you want. Are you hungry or thirsty? Are you hurting anywhere?"He got up to pour me some water.Honestly, just looking at him made me sick. I frowned in disgust. "Cut the act, Maxwell. Let's get a divorce."His hand trembled. The scalding water splashed over the back of his hand.He rushed over to me, his eyes red. "No, Darling. We're not getting a divorce! I know you can'

Maxwell finally came to his senses. "Mrs. Burton, I'm sorry. It's my fault Karina was wronged."His voice was incredibly gentle, his face filled with guilt. He then turned and grabbed me again. The movement split open the stitches on my stomach. Blood started seeping out again.I passed out from the pain. Maxwell acted as if he didn't see it, dragging me out like a dead dog."Natalie, you're never going to stop, are you? You've put on this whole show, but in the end, nothing actually happened to you. If you think clinging on to this act is going to get you out of what you did to Karina, you're too naive!" Maxwell scoffed at me.Just then, Molly rushed back after finally securing a bed in the ICU for me.Seeing the scene before her, she looked like she wanted to kill someone."Maxwell! Are you trying to kill your own wife over some homewrecker? She's bleeding again. Are you blind?"Maxwell froze, shocked by the yelling. He impatiently kicked me hard in the stomach. "Molly,
