Chapter 3

Author: Beans & Mash
News of Ivan's pursuit of his true love was so widely reported that even my parents knew about it.

The moment I walked through the door, I overheard them talking about how cruel I was to have dumped him back then. Not to mention, they were worried about what he might do now that he was powerful.

But after the day's events, I could barely explain anything to them. I merely said, "Mom, Dad, all you need to know is that I would never dump anyone casually like that. But there are things I need confirmation of."

Once in my room, I quickly searched for Ivan's interviews, and a flood of results instantly popped up. Almost every headline included my name.

I clicked one at random, and a handsome man appeared on the screen. His expression carried a hint of longing.

"In my hardest times, thoughts of her kept me going."

The camera cut to the host's moved expression after hearing his words.

The video ended with Ivan sighing and saying, "Even though she once told me we could never be together."

At the end of the video, the top liked comment glared back at me. "His true love must regret leaving him now. I can't wait to see her crawl back to him!"

When I was done watching the video, I dug out my old graduation photobook from the corner of the house. I flipped it over and checked the names one by one.

At the very edge of the picture, I finally found Ivan. He stood in the corner, almost swallowed by shadows.

His overgrown bangs hid his eyes, making his face hard to see, and his uniform collar was crooked and loose. He stood out starkly against his classmates, who were smiling brightly.

He looked nothing like the confident man who now spoke eloquently on financial news.

Yet, no matter how many times I replayed his words from those interviews, I still had no memory of him.

I hadn't anticipated how unsettling Ivan's fixation would become. My apartment rent had mysteriously been covered for three years, and every time I tried to work in a café, a piece of cake would show up at my table without me ordering it.

The whole thing made me feel a fear I had never known before. It was like I was being watched. But in addition to the fear was fury.

I had come home to spend time with my family and contribute my knowledge to the country. I didn't come back for romance.

After sending in a job application, I received a notice to attend the interview. But the moment I handed my résumé to the receptionist, her eyes widened. "Are you Mr. Olsen's…"

My heart skipped a beat, and I cut her off sharply, "I'm Jennifer Palmer, and I'm here to apply for the Principal Investigator position."

The interview went unbelievably smoothly, and the questions were comically easy.

At the end of the interview, the HR manager adjusted his glasses with a sheepish smile, saying, "To be honest, Ms. Palmer, you didn't need to go through the interview process. Olsen Group is our major partner, and Mr. Olsen has told me about you."

I could feel my hands trembling with anger at the mention of Ivan.

"I graduated from one of the world's top three universities, and I have four first-author papers published in top-tier journals and two patent projects under my name. You're telling me none of that compares to some ridiculous connection?" I stressed each syllable as fury boiled inside of me.

In an instant, the conference room went dead silent.

The HR manager's round face turned stiff and awkward. "That's not what I meant. It's just that Mr. Olsen has instructed…"

I stood up before he could finish his sentence and emphasized, saying, "Please tell Mr. Olsen that his intervention has already affected my life. If he tries to interfere with my career choices again, I'll file a report with the authorities for workplace discrimination and abuse of power.

"Besides, your behavior has made me doubt whether or not I'd have room to grow here. Hence, I don't think I would fit your company's culture, so please hire someone else."

When I walked out of the building, I immediately called Tara. "Are there any class reunions happening soon?"

"I was just about to tell you that Ivan booked out Paramount Restaurant for the day after tomorrow…"

"I'll be there," I cut her off. "I want to ask him why he's spreading those lies about me."

Perhaps Tara sensed I was upset, so she quickly hung up after muttering a few words.

Time flowed like water in a swift stream. When Ivan's crime came to light, the news remained a hot topic for a long while. After all, he had been the handsome and successful hopeless romantic in everyone's heads. The headlines grew more sensational by the day, with titles like "The two sides of a businessman", "A decade of stalking", and "Beware of delusional psychos."The online community and those who had once admired Ivan admitted they'd been wrong about him. Some women even confessed they now feared to glance at or help a stranger on the street for fear of their intentions being misinterpreted. My parents and close friends were worried about me too, and when Tara found out about what had happened, she hugged me and sobbed, saying she had been fooled by Ivan as well.Although the whole thing freaked me out, I didn't have much connection with him, so I quickly returned to my normal life. However, Ashley never truly healed. She couldn't bring herself to date again and would t

I frowned and tried hard to recall the incident. Then, a faint memory of a rainy evening surfaced. On my way to tuition with Tara, I'd noticed a classmate getting soaked. So, I'd lent him an umbrella, then left with Tara without a second thought. The boy hadn't stood out much in class, but I was sure he'd been a classmate. So much time had passed since then that I couldn't recall who I'd given the umbrella to. After all, it had been such an ordinary gesture."Are you the classmate I lent the umbrella to?"Ivan stared at my face, hoping that I would recognize him. But what he saw was my confused expression.Unwilling to accept it, he pressed on and said, "What about the sports competition? You fell during the 800 meters run, and I was the first to help you. You even leaned on my arms!"My eyes widened as I realized he wasn't right in the head. "I was busy preparing to study abroad back then, so I'd never participated in any sports competitions!" I snapped."You're lying!" he b

The Olsen Group was under investigation. When Ivan got the news, he was in a bar, looking for women who looked like Jennifer. He was thrilled that he had found someone whose lips resembled Jennifer's. However, her eyes didn't measure up at all. He only saw a shallow, scheming woman desperate to climb the social ladder. He roughly yanked the woman's hair, causing her to scream in pain. He imagined it was Jennifer screaming, and a twisted laugh escaped his mouth. He believed Jennifer had to be miserable after those edited pictures of her got out, but he thought she deserved this lesson for pretending not to know him.As Ivan was lost in his fantasy of Jennifer needing his help like a damsel in distress, he was startled awake by the bar manager's panicked shout, telling him to run. It was then that he realized what was happening outside. His company had been raided, and its finances were entirely cut off. Even his house had been searched, where the police discovered a massive co

Over the next few days, we stopped paying attention to the trending headlines. Meanwhile, Ivan was livid when he noticed I hadn't sought him out. As a result, his harassment messages grew more frequent, laced with nauseating sweet talk and menacing threats. He had sent people to look for me, but he discovered I had bodyguards protecting me.Upon learning this, Ivan grew furious and wanted to vent all his anger out on Ashley. Despite looking like me, Ashley didn't have the social status I had, so she was an easy target for him to hurt. But before he could unleash his fury, his company started to fall apart.Chelsey had acted swiftly and without mercy, snatching up most of his projects while claiming she wanted to expand into the domestic market. What remained were unprofitable ventures riddled with problems, forcing him to pour in money to keep them afloat. Ivan had built Olsen Group from nothing. Even though he had backers later on, their relationships were purely transact

I momentarily paused before the realization hit me, and I asked, "You mean Olsen Group's funds were dodgy from the start?"Chelsea looked impressed and pulled up a series of charts on her laptop as she explained, "Ivan has filed for an IPO, and the valuation is close to ten billion dollars. However, roughly 40% of that comes from an illegal source. "So, I think your plan isn't ruthless enough. Putting him behind bars would be too easy on him. A man like that needs to watch his empire crumble before he's thrown into prison."She finished the last piece of her fruit and elegantly wiped her hands with a napkin. Then, she seemed to remember something important and asked, "Can Ashley access his financial records?"Ashley was shaken by Chelsea's ruthlessness, but the more she thought about it, the more she realized she couldn't be gentle when facing someone like Ivan. She wasn't sure of the plan's specifics, but she was prepared to go along and wait for Chelsea's lead.Pulled back from

I felt my body trembling as I asked, "Why are you showing me this?""Because Ivan is watching me now!" Ashley burst out. "Since your return, he's been down every single night watching those videos of you. He even made sure I mimicked you completely. "I agreed at first out of love and money, but the more I obeyed, the more he hurt me!"When he noticed I was staring at you during the reunion, he beat me up after we got home and said that trash like me wasn't worthy of looking at his first love." Then, she pulled down her T-shirt collar to reveal the bruises and bite marks on her skin. It made my stomach turn. At that moment, I suddenly realized the situation was far worse than I had imagined.Ashley's shaky voice continued, "My grandma has late-stage cancer, and she thought I was just tutoring for extra money. I couldn't let her know the truth. I was wrong for letting love and desperation push me into the arms of a madman like him! I wasn't even of age when I first got involved wi
