Chapter 2

Author: Anonymous
Still, my sudden compliance managed to stir a small flicker of guilt deep in my parents' hearts.

That evening, they brought me a cello when they returned.

It was from my absolute favorite maker—something that had never happened in my past life.

Over the following weeks, I stuck to my routine at school, grinding through the material until every concept was burned into my mind.

Whenever exhaustion threatened to pull me under, I played the cello for a little while.

The rich, lyrical music offered a brief escape, letting me temporarily forget the crushing pain of being ignored.

Yet even that solitary comfort was ultimately destroyed by my brother.

That afternoon, Jordan—who had never shown the slightest interest in musical instruments—suddenly decided he wanted to learn the cello.

Straining his fragile body, he scooped up the heavy instrument and tried to carry it to his bedroom.

Instead, he dropped the cello down the stairs, where it shattered into pieces.

He scraped his hands in the process.

Looking up at me with wide, doe-like eyes full of panic, he gasped, "Brandon, I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to!

"I'll fix it for you right now, I promise!"

I stared straight into his eyes and gave a single nod. "Okay."

At my response, Jordan immediately crouched down, frantically gathering the wooden wreckage.

A snapped string whipped free from the soundbox, slicing into his delicate hands.

The second blood welled up, Mom charged at me like an enraged mama bear, jabbing a furious finger in my face.

"It's just a damn instrument! How could you be so cruel? Do you honestly think we would’ve bought you that stupid thing if Jordan hadn't begged us to?

"You don't care about your own brother's health for a single second! All you care about are these cold, lifeless objects! No wonder you're so utterly impossible to love!"

Her words stabbed straight into my heart, twisting deeper until I felt I was bleeding inside.

Right.

I was always the kid who was impossible to love.

Even this cello had only been a gift through Jordan's gracious mercy in the first place.

I cast my eyes down and spoke to Jordan, "Don't bother fixing it. I don't even like playing it anymore anyway."

Jordan cradled his bleeding fingers, tears streaming down his pale cheeks. "No, I have to! I said I'd fix it for you!"

He hunkered back down, stubbornly trying to piece together the shattered violently broken frame.

A fraction of a second later, Dad's hand struck across my face with a brutal crack.

"You reckless piece of trash! Can't you speak to him properly for once?

"Look at the state of your brother, and you're still pushing him! We should’ve never brought that wretched instrument into this house!"

Dad had put his entire weight behind the slap.

Yet somehow, I felt no physical pain.

There was only a heavy, stinging pressure behind my eyes as if tears were desperately trying to break through.

Gazing at my parents, who glared back at me as though I were their worst enemy, I looked at Jordan with complete sincerity.

"I'm sorry, Jordan. You really don't need to fix it for me.

"It's my fault. I won't ask for a cello ever again."

That was a promise.

I would not ask for one ever again.

Not for a cello, and not for any of you.

I was done wanting a family.

As for the things that truly belonged to me, I was never going to let them steal them from me again.

Thanks to Professor Rhodes, my parents, Jordan, and Ella were all sent to prison.Just as Professor Rhodes promised, he pursued the maximum possible penalties for every single one of them.Due to my title as Mr. Foster’s star pupil, my paintings held extraordinary commercial value. The final evaluation placed the total value of the stolen artwork in the millions. As the ringleader who unlocked the door, Ella was sentenced to sixteen years.Jordan received fifteen years. My parents were sentenced to ten years. They were originally facing fifteen years as well. However, I offered a partial settlement on one strict condition: they had to sign formal disownment agreements severing all familial ties between us. In exchange, their sentences were reduced by five years. Now, I would never have to see their faces again for the rest of my life.Years later, I hosted another massive solo art exhibition.By then, my personal social media following had grown to over ten million. They we

Right up until the police cuffed them and led them away, my parents, Jordan, and Ella still could not comprehend how everything had spiraled out of control. How had the helpless son they used to crush and manipulate so easily suddenly become completely unmanageable? They had marched into the gallery with a whole crew, fully intending to drag me straight to hell.Instead, the first thing waiting for them was a squad of police officers."Are you Jordan West's family and Miss Ella Dawson?" the lead officer said, "Brandon West filed a formal police report stating you stole his artwork and unlawfully hijacked his exhibition. Please come with us to the station to assist in the investigation."My parents stared at me in complete disbelief.Mom whipped out the fake psychiatric evaluation, shoving it toward the police. "Assist in an investigation? What kind of joke is this? Look at this paper! Brandon is a certified lunatic. How could you possibly take his word for anything?"Jordan chim

Right on cue, my phone lit up a split second later. The second I answered, my mom's screeching voice burst through the speaker."Brandon, did you see the news? There are tons of ignorant trolls online bashing your brother! I need you to film a clarification video right this second. Say that the painting at the mansion was actually something you snuck over to paint for Jordan, and that it has nothing to do with you!"Tell everyone that your brother is actually the gifted artistic genius between you two, and that you're just a talentless hack!"Mom laid out her demands with complete, unbelievable entitlement.Even now, her instinct was not to make amends. Instead, like always, she was throwing me under the bus to take the fall.Except things were different now.I was no longer that helpless kid who did not know how to fight back, letting them smear my name and manipulate me at will.I spoke three words into the receiver, "In your dreams."I hung up without a second thought. The

After I left, my exhibition achieved unprecedented success.Just like in my previous life, Jordan assumed my identity and instantly became a hotshot genius painter.Interviews poured in one after another. The university dropped its plans to expel him.Instead, they even named him an outstanding student.Everyone knew that the junior painting class had a genius younger brother and a talentless older brother.Everyone was full of endless praise for Jordan.Riding on his handsome looks and his newly minted persona as a devoted boyfriend to Ella, he gained millions of followers in just a few short days. For a moment, he was the undisputed center of attention.Watching Jordan's rising online popularity, a wide smile curved my lips.He kept getting more famous. The higher he climbed, the better. The higher he rose, the harder he would fall. The date of the exhibition crept closer and closer. On the surface, everything seemed completely peaceful.Except for Ella, who constantly dropped dramatic sighs around me, lamenting how Jordan was really facing expulsion, how he had already started packing his bags, and how he even bought a train ticket back to our hometown.Every time she brought it up, she carefully searched my face for any sign of guilt or hesitation.Until one day, she told me that Jordan was so heartbroken over dropping out that he had been hospitalized.Yet, I remained completely unmoved. She finally snapped.Glaring at me with pure hatred, Ella pointed right in my face and barked, "How can you be so cold-blooded? Your own brother is sick in the hospital and you don't even care?"Is one exhibition and a few stupid paintings really that important to you? Are you seriously throwing away your own family for this?"Looking at her, a strange sense of exhaustion washed over me.In my past life, she had said

Ella had not shown up at the studio to help with the exhibition for two whole days. That had never happened before.Usually, the second her last class ended, she could not wait to run over and see me.That afternoon, I was working in the studio when Ella—who had been missing for days—suddenly reappeared. The instant her eyes met mine, tears welled up, glistening in her eyes."Brandon, I always knew things were hard for you, but I had no idea you were suffering this much."Before the words even fully left her lips, she threw her arms around me, resting her cheek against my shoulder. She held my waist tightly as if I were the most precious thing in her world."Brandon, please let me take care of you from now on."What a deeply moving speech. If I had not been destroyed by her in my previous life, I would have fallen right back into her trap. Now, my chest felt completely hollow. There was not a single spark left."Did Jordan tell you all this?"I voiced the exact thought in m
