Blake's POV

My best friend, Seth Johnson, smiled the moment he heard my girlfriend, Quinn Simmons, give in to him.

"I was just teasing you," he said. "I wasn't really mad. I just knew that you would grow softhearted."

Quinn ruffled his hair and helplessly said, "You also knew that I'd immediately fold when I saw your tears."

"I don't care," Seth whined while shaking her arm. "You already agreed, so you have to accompany me."

"Alright. Stop tugging my arm. My sleeve is getting all wrinkled."

Although we had been together for eight years, this was the first time I learned that Quinn was someone who easily grew soft-hearted.

There was an incident in the past that happened when we were having our cold war. Someone had maliciously reported me for cheating during our final exams, which meant that my scholarship money was at risk of being revoked at any moment.

Quinn sat diagonally behind me, giving her a clear view of everything I did during the exam. Thus, the counselor summoned her to verify the accusation.

"I'm not sure," she said calmly. "I have no reason to stare at someone unrelated during the entire exam. But I've heard that money has been tight for him recently."

Quinn's words cost me my scholarship, which in turn cost me the money I needed to pay Mom's hospital bills.

That afternoon, I teetered on the edge of a breakdown as I cried my heart out in the stairwell.

"Why did you say that?" I roared. "You knew that I didn't cheat! Why didn't you clear my name for me? Do you have any idea how important the scholarship money is to me? I was going to use it to save Mom's life!

"I'm always studying during my part-time job. I'm so busy that I don't have time to relax for even a second. How dare you ruin all my hard work with a single sentence?"

Quinn leaned against the staircase railing, arms crossed. She looked at me coldly and waited for me to cry until my voice turned hoarse. Only then did she approach me and offer me a tissue.

"Are you done with your tantrum yet? You look so pathetic when you're in hysterics over money, Blake Beckett."

Crying in front of Quinn did nothing for me. Only Seth's tears worked on her—only his tears had the power to move her heart.

I canceled the three tickets for the comedy, saying, "The two of you can watch whatever you want. I won't be joining you."

Blake's POVPeace was restored to my life after the ambulance took Quinn away. She didn't appear again for the next two weeks.I clocked in and out on time every day and took Mom for a stroll around Westbill Lake on the weekends. The days passed by in an orderly manner. One afternoon, I received a call from an unknown number."You must be so pleased with yourself, Blake Beckett."The voice on the other end belonged to none other than Seth."I don't understand what you're trying to say," I replied.Seth laughed before saying drily, "She still chose you in the end. You've won.""I don't think I've won anything," I said calmly. "If this is supposed to be a victory, I would rather let you have the honor."Seth fell silent on the other end of the line for a few seconds. His breathing turned a little ragged before he asked, "Do you remember the last movie that the three of us watched together, Blake? I had said that I thought it was a shame that the male and female leads didn't end

Blake's POVThree days after I started my new job, the receptionist, Layla Dennis, placed a cup of warm honey water on my desk. A receipt from the food delivery platform was stuck to the bottom of the cup. The buyer had included a note with the order."30 percent sugar. Mix with warm water. His stomach is sensitive. Please deliver this on time."Just then, my phone lit up."The temperature's dropping in Healwich. Remember to drink water. I couldn't take care of you when your stomach was acting up before. I'll be sure to take care of you every day from now on."I left the honey water untouched and poured it down the sink in the break room.…Quinn blocked my path again after I finished work. She pulled out a folded A4 sheet of paper from her pocket, unfurled it, and offered it to me. "Take a look at this, Blake."The company's seal was stamped on the paper. It was a termination letter, and the person who had been fired was Seth."I fired him," Quinn said confidently, as if sh

Blake's POVThree days after returning to Healwich, I accompanied Mom to the farmers' market. I picked out two cuts of fresh salmon and some asparagus.Mom had fully recovered long ago. She was full of energy as she haggled with the store owner. My phone lay quietly in my pocket. I didn't have any missed calls or messages ordering me to deliver stomach medicine within ten minutes. I also no longer had to deal with Seth's sarcastic behavior.I spotted Quinn standing outside my apartment. Her eyes were bloodshot, and she looked incredibly haggard. She frowned reflexively when she noticed the plastic bag I was holding."You blocked me just to come back here and go grocery shopping?" she asked.I brushed past her and headed for the stairwell.Quinn grabbed my wrist. "I drove through the night to pick you up, Blake. You've won. I've already changed the name on the property deed."She used her free hand to pull out a document from the inner pocket of her coat and pressed it into my h

Third-Person POVOn the screen, Blake's name sat at the top of the award-winners list. Was he truly that amazing? When Quinn first established her business, her company faced a severe lack of funds because they couldn't secure any projects. Blake was the one who single-handedly stayed up five nights in a row to create the draft for the villa that captivated their clients.Dark bags sat under his eyes as he placed the signed contract before her and said, "We're saved, Quinn."Later, once the company was on the right track, Quinn moved Blake into an easier position because she worried he would burn himself out. As a result, she slowly forgot that he had originally been such an outstanding designer. He had also been the top student of his major when she was establishing her business.Seth was still chattering away. "300,000 dollars. It's no wonder he's so stubborn. But he's just someone who stays home all day and prepares your meals. He wouldn't have the time to work on such a h

Third-Person POVThe next day at 11:00 am, Quinn balanced a pen between her fingers and leaned back in her chair. She hadn't slept well the night before. The apartment had been eerily quiet.Blake would have sent her three messages by now—reminding her to drink water, asking what she wanted for lunch, and telling her his schedule.Quinn's phone screen remained dark that day. She didn't believe that Blake could keep up his act for too long. They had been together for eight years. He could stew in his worry for half the day if she so much as looked at him the wrong way. There was no way he could leave her. He would be back by tomorrow—at the latest, the day after tomorrow. He would use another number to call her and apologize to her through tears. The dull thuds of footsteps against the carpet echoed from beyond the door. Seth threw open the glass door and barged into her office without knocking."What message are you trying to send, Quinn Simmons?" he demanded in his usual indulg

Third-Person POVSeth was practically glued to Quinn as he gestured to where he wanted the couch to be in the living room. He softened his voice as he asked her how firm the mattress in the master bedroom should be. Not only did Quinn not push him away, but she even wrapped an arm around his waist.Quinn pulled her phone out after she returned home. A message popped up on her screen, notifying her that a total of 236,542.17 dollars had been wired into her account. The number was so precise that it included the last two decimals, not a penny more or less. She laughed as she stared at the number. "You're willing to take out a loan just to make the act seem more real?"Quinn knew Blake better than anyone else. He sent most of the money from his pitiful salary back home, so it was impossible for him to produce so much money at once. His hard-to-get methods were getting sloppier and sloppier. She was sure the debt collectors would start blowing up his phone within three days when
