INTRUDER

Within the Andrew household, a haunting hush enveloped the air as sunlight streamed through the windows.

The warmth pouring in stood in stark contrast to the cold in the hearts of those inside, each person yearning for something vital.

Mia lingered over breakfast, arranging each dish with care. She hummed softly, oblivious to the underlying troubles that weighed on her employers.

If only she could claim their riches, her spirit would remain untroubled. Money had a way of smoothing over every concern.

She sensed that Mrs. Andrew was approaching as her scent lingered in the morning air.

She looked exhausted, as though the night offered no rest.

“Are you alright ma’am?”

“I’m fine thank you. I’ll have my breakfast in my room this morning. Don’t let the kids know I’m awake.”

Mia nodded obediently as Celia left for her room. Each step seemingly more painful than the one before.

No sooner had she finished setting the table than Javyn joined her in the dining room

NEW LIFE “What’s taking him so long?” Mrs. Kent wondered out loud. Zayn had made it to Savannah’s hiding spot just as she turned around, facing the wall. “I can still see you.” “Oh wow, so you’re visually impaired…” “Do I know you?” They both heard approaching footsteps, a relief to Savannah. “I see you’ve already met Vivienne.” Mrs. Kent chimed in excitedly. “She’s quite scared, have to be patient with her.” “Oh…” “Vee, this is Big pop’s son, Zayn. He’ll be staying with us for a while.” Savannah lowered her head as she turned around. He immediately recognized her. “Vivienne?” He nodded, quite amused by the new name. “You two better get along. I’ll be in the kitchen if you need me.” With that she left for the place she loved most in the house. “Great.” That was her only reaction to being stuck with Zayn. “Vivienne? Seriously?” “Like you’d have a better name after a week of being unconscious.” “You alright though? Javyn’s been worried about you.” “Ho

STRATEGY As an accomplished menace to society, a threat to everyone but himself, Abel fell asleep soundly after a drinking spree throughout the night. His naked body was spread on the carpeted floor without a care in the world. Lost in a deep slumber he would never wake up from. Even The Angel of Death could fall for a trap meant to lure him to his grave. The young lady that kept him company that night closed in on his stiff body. It was cold, a temperature common in lifeless bodies. She sipped on her wine once more before making the panicked call on his phone. She was an escort he’d brought back home for a nice time. She couldn’t understand why he kept running out of breath, so they fell asleep. She never heard him leave the bed let alone fall to the ground. That morning sirens rang outside Abel’s home, his safest hideout. They knocked on the door to no response. Where was the lady that made that call? Soon, the authorities he had spent years running away from were breaki

THE RESULTS The whole house was still and quiet, sunlight filtering in through the lace curtains. The clock ticked faintly. Savannah’s eyes locked on the pregnancy test resting on the bedside table. Her hands tremble in her lap. Mrs. Kent pushed a strand of her silver hair behind her ear. She's been watching Savannah closely—not intrusively, just there, steady like a porch light in a storm. “It’s almost time.” Savannah whispered. “We’ll look together, sweetheart. No rush.” The digital screen on the test blinked once. Then stopped. The answer was final. POSITIVE. Savannah saw it first. Her breath caught—more like a hiccup than a gasp—and her hand flew to her mouth. “Oh my God.” Savannah muttered the words silently. She didn’t cry right away. Just stared. The air tightened around them. Mrs. Kent knelt slowly, knees cracking gently on the carpeted floor. She took Savannah’s hands in hers. “I see it too.” Mrs. Kent was gently rubbing the back of her hands. Savanna

A MOTHER’S WORST FEARS Jada had thrown up for the third time that morning, prompting Celia to insist that she stay at home. “Zayn, please tag along with Mom and take Jada to the hospital.” Those were Javyn’s last instructions as he left for his weekly visit to the sheriff’s office. He promised to be back early to check on her. Celia left her daughter’s room to get ready. She knew Zayn would be calling after them in a few. Zayn walked into the room just as she closed the door to her room. “Come lie with me.” She was reaching her hand out. He wasted no time joining her on the bed as he had done many times before. She seemed drowsy. “You’ll be okay, Rosie.” He was feeling her temperature with the back of his hand. “I don’t think so. I haven’t gotten my period since last month, and I’m scared.” Those words were enough to stir him up. Still, he maintained his composure. He knew she must be more terrified than he was. She looked up at him. “Don’t you have anythi

COULD IT BE? The birds were chirping in tune with the morning breeze, and it was a beautiful morning. Savannah picked out fresh eggs from the kitchen coop and placed them in the basket. It was her favorite task every morning, and Mrs. Kent was sure that was not a chore she had to worry about anymore. This particular morning, Savannah walked into the house with a basket full to the brim with eggs. “Your lucky hands did it again. Those seem like a decent amount for pancakes today.” “I know, ma'am, need help preparing them?” She was smiling ear to ear. Savannah organized the eggs on the almost-empty egg tray. “You know I’ll never say no to your company in the kitchen, why don’t you start by beating the eggs?” She cracked the first egg into a bowl. No sooner had she started beating the eggs than she felt lightheaded. Her feet were suddenly too weak to hold her. She tried to support herself onto the counter, but her hands slowly turned numb. “Are you okay, Vee?” Mrs. Kent
