DINNER AT EIGHT

~LAUREN’S POV~

I stared at my reflection in the mirror like I was waiting to recognize myself again. Same girl. Same long, wavy black hair.

Same hazel eyes that never quite gave away enough.

Same cherry lips that trembled more than they smiled lately. I was still me. That’s what I kept telling myself.

But no one tells you that sometimes you can look the same and still feel like a stranger inside your skin.

I let out a shaky breath, grabbing the towel from the rack. I wrapped it tightly around myself as if the pressure could somehow hold me together.

Dinner.

I laughed under my breath. The kind of laugh that doesn’t mean anything at all. It wasn’t just dinner, and we both knew it.

I unlocked the door and stepped out, stopping dead when I saw him. Leaning there, casually filling the doorway like he belonged in every space I entered. His arms crossed, ankles relaxed, but his eyes…

His eyes were anything but casual. They were steady. Focused.

On me.

COFFEE AND CONFESSIONS~ LAUREN'S POV ~The little coffee shop across the street from Storm Publishing felt like a sanctuary. Ethan held the door open for me, his hand gentle on my back as I stepped inside. After our tense elevator conversation this morning, his sudden gentlemanly behavior caught me off guard. The café was small and cozy, with mismatched chairs and the smell of fresh-ground coffee beans filling the air. We found a table by the window, and I sank into my chair feeling like I had just survived a hurricane."How are you holding up?" Ethan asked once we had ordered. His almost green eyes studied my face with genuine concern.I let out a bitter laugh. "Go ahead. Say it.""Say what?""I told you so." I wrapped my hands around my coffee cup, seeking its warmth. "Dating a trillionaire comes with a lot of hate and opinions. You tried to warn me this morning."But Ethan didn't gloat. He didn't even smile smugly. He just watched me with those thoughtful eyes, his expression un

BETRAYAL AND SHADOWS~ LAUREN'S POV ~The elevator ride to the newsroom felt like the longest forty seconds of my life. Rosette and Patrick stood pressed against the back wall, their earlier argument forgotten in favor of watching the drama unfold between Ethan and me.When the doors finally opened, I nearly sprinted out, desperate for the friendly chaos of the newsroom to drown out the stress."Lauren, wait." Ethan's voice followed me as I weaved between desks toward my workstation.I ignored him, focusing instead on powering up my computer and pulling out the files for today's presentation. The story I had been working on for weeks….Investigating problems in construction contracts that could reveal important corruption in the city.My hands shook slightly as I opened the folder. This presentation could make my career. After all the whispers about being Alexandro's girlfriend, I needed something to prove I belonged here on my own merit."Lauren." Ethan appeared beside my desk, his

JEALOUSY AND CONFRONTATION~ ALEXANDRO'S POV ~I was barely out of the Storm Publishing parking lot when I hit Mario's number on speed dial. The phone rang twice before his familiar voice came through the speakers."Missing me already?" Mario's amused tone grated on my nerves."What's the latest on Ethan Miller and his uncle?" I cut straight to the point. There was a pause. "Why are you so heated up? Did pretty boy do something?"I gripped the steering wheel tighter, watching Lauren's building disappear in my rearview mirror. "He looked at her like she was his next meal. Right in front of me. The disrespectful piece of shit thinks he can….”"Whoa, slow down there, Romeo." Mario's laughter filled the car. "Are you seriously calling me because some journalist checked out your girlfriend?""It's not funny, Mario.""It's a little funny. The great Alexandro Castello reduced to a jealous boyfriend." I could practically hear him grinning. "What's next? Are you going to key his motorcycle?""

FIRST DAY AT WORK~ LAUREN'S POV ~ The city streets blurred past the tinted windows of Alexandro's car, but I couldn't focus on anything except the black sedan following us in the rearview mirror. Luca's car. My bodyguard. The thought still felt surreal. My stomach twisted into knots, and I pressed a hand against it, trying to calm the nerves that had been building since I woke up. New Year's always did this to me. Made me anxious about fresh starts and new beginnings.I remembered how Patrick used to tease me about my morning sickness before work. "You act like you're going to war, not journalism," he'd say with that stupid laugh of his. I'd force a smile then, pretending it was funny. Now the memory just made me frown."Lauren."Alexandro's voice cut through my thoughts. I turned to find his green eyes studying me with concern."Everything okay, sweetheart?"I forced a bright smile. "Perfect. Just thinking."He didn't look convinced, but he didn't push. That was one thing I loved

NORMAL DAYS AND HIDDEN TRUTHS~ LAUREN'S POV ~I stared at myself in the bathroom mirror, trying to convince my reflection that everything was normal. That I was just a regular girl getting ready for work. Not someone whose boyfriend had come home last night with blood on his clothes and darkness in his eyes.My phone buzzed against the marble countertop."Finally!" Sophia's voice filled the bathroom through the speaker. "I've been calling you for days. Where have you been hiding?""Sorry," I said, applying mascara with shaky hands. "Things have been... complicated.""Complicated how? And don't you dare give me some vague answer? I'm your best friend, Lauren. I know when you're holding back."I sighed, setting down the mascara wand. Where could I even start? The safe house? The blood? The way Alexandro had looked at me last night like he was memorizing my face?"I moved in with Alexandro," I said instead.Silence. Then: "You WHAT?""I moved into his place. His mansion, actually. It's.

BLOOD AND BETRAYAL~ ALEXANDRO'S POV ~The docks smelled like death and saltwater.I crouched behind a shipping container, checking my Glock one final time. Around me, twelve of my best men waited in the shadows, their faces hard and ready. This wasn't going to be a negotiation. This was war."Radio check," I whispered into my earpiece."Antonio here. The east side is clear.""Mario, south entrance.""All quiet on my end, boss.""Luca, how's our precious cargo?"There was a pause before Luca's voice crackled through. "Safehouse is secure. The ladies are... entertaining each other with some card game. Lauren keeps asking about you."I felt something twist in my chest. Lauren. My reason for being here. My reason for everything."Keep them safe," I said. "Whatever happens tonight, they don't get touched.""Copy that."I turned to Antonio, who was studying the Red Star Maritime building through military-grade binoculars. "How many do you count?""At least fifteen, maybe twenty. They're no
