Chapter 4 Protecting His Sister

Author: Lynn Jayne
That made me tear up.

Alicia stormed off, and I did not see her again for several days. The maidservants said Yves had been feeling unwell, and Alicia had been staying with him.

I got slightly better in the meantime. Then, I remembered that Yvonne Shaw, my sister, was coming back from the learning institute, so I went to the kitchen to make some desserts for her.

Halfway through making the desserts, a commotion broke out in the yard.

"Your Highness, this is bad! Ms. Shaw argued with Sir Samson, and he wants to cut her limbs off!"

My world nearly went black, but I held the kitchen counter with a trembling hand and managed to stay up.

Yvonne was the only family I had left. I quickly went into the yard. Yves was standing under a tree, staring venomously at my tied-up sister.

He was holding a blade in his hand. I shoved him away and pulled Yvonne into my arms. "Stop, Yves! What are you doing?" I roared at him.

Yves looked at me from head to toe. He savored my hysterical look and smirked. "Your sister crossed me. All I want is her limbs. No big deal."

"How dare you!" I glared at him, fury filling my whole body.

Yves huddled close enough to whisper, and he gave me a challenging grin. "Of course I dare. You're no prince consort. You're less than a dog in this place! Even if I cut her limbs off, the princess won't say a word!

"Men, do it!"

The servants of this household were used to Alicia tormenting me. Though I was the prince consort, Yves held a higher position in her heart.

They stepped forth. I held Yvonne tightly in my arms and grabbed the fallen blade. Then I charged at Yves. "Touch her, and I'll kill you!"

"How dare you?" Alicia's voice spoke darkly from behind.

A wave of power sent me flying. I fell to the ground, and my whole body ached. Yves jumped into Alicia's arms and cried softly. "Princess, help me! I wanted to walk around a bit, given the fair weather, and somehow I crossed Ms. Shaw. She tried to hit me…

"I just wanted to punish her a little, but the prince consort wanted to kill me!" He wept as though he were the true victim. The guards were about to attack, and I quickly crawled over to Alicia.

"Tell them to stop! It's not what he said! My sister wouldn't…"

She kicked me away before I could finish pleading. The woman looked at me coldly. My face was pale, and blood trickled from the corner of my mouth.

The sight made her eyes widen. I crawled over again and gripped the armrest of her wheelchair. "Please, Alicia. Don't hurt Yvonne. She's the only family I have left…"

She was wavering and was about to say something, but Yves sighed. "I know you care about the prince consort, despite his previous betrayal. You can't bring yourself to hurt him. It's alright. I can endure it. It's just that poor little me is so frightened… I'm afraid I might fall ill for a long time."

Alicia's face fell, and hatred filled her eyes as she remembered the past.

"Men, paddle Yvonne a hundred times and throw her out of the residence."

"I'll make it up to you, Michael. I promise." Alicia kneeled before me, striking herself again and again. "This is my fault. If I hadn't been so stubborn, none of this would've happened. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. Please, forgive me, Michael.""No, I will not forgive you," I said coldly. After all, this woman killed my whole family and tormented me for three years. None of that could ever be undone, and yet she still had the nerve to ask for forgiveness. The anticipation in her eyes died out. She remained kneeling there, her heart seemingly sinking into hopelessness. "I'll do anything," she said hoarsely. "As long as you'll forgive me."I pulled my sleeve out of her grasp. "I'll never forgive you unless you die!"She closed her eyes, and when she opened them, she smiled and looked at me. "I will. If that will make you happy, I'll do it. I owe you that much.""Then, what are you waiting for?" I asked. She shook her head. "I can take my own life, but I can't leave you alone. I've g

Alicia had just arrived outside the empress dowager's bedchambers when she overheard her mother speaking to a maidservant."Empress Dowager, our men didn't see Michael. Do you think he's having second thoughts about leaving?""Curse that wretch. I was going to get rid of him, but he managed to escape! Alicia can't bring herself to kill him! That man nearly ruined her claim to the throne. If she knows the truth, I…""You only did it for her claim to the throne. Even if she knows you orchestrated the assassination, she'll understand where you're coming from."Outside the door, Alicia froze. She could not believe what she had just heard. Her mother truly orchestrated the whole thing. Her hatred toward me had been for nothing. Everything she had clung to for the past three years suddenly felt like a cruel joke. She kicked the door open, and her mother was shocked. She stared at Alicia in silence for a long, long time.Alicia moved forward step by step. Her mother sighed. "You heard

The fact that I took my own life without any hesitation nearly made Alicia's heart stop. She lunged forward and caught me in her arms. "Get the imperial healer!" She roared at the guards. "Go!" Then she looked down at me, her voice trembling despite herself. "Hang in there, Michael. You'll be fine."I had already lost consciousness. But Alicia kept muttering to herself, tears spilling down her face as though she truly cared about me.Yves froze. The words I had spoken before I collapsed kept echoing in his mind, and unease finally began to creep over him. He carefully watched Alicia's expression, trying to figure out what she would do next. "I had no idea he hated me so much, princess. Even in death, he wanted to destroy…"Frustrated, Alicia shoved him away. "Scram!"He had never been treated like that by her before. For a moment, he froze again, but panic quickly surged through him. After all, the household knew he killed Hope. Still, he thought Alicia's longtime affection

She strode over to me and grabbed my hairpin. Even as it pierced her palm, she did not let go. She stared at me. "What are you doing? Do you really think I would just stand here and watch you die?"Her eyes were red with fury. I sneered. What a joke. "The man you love pushed our only daughter into the lake and let her drown. Do you have any idea what he did? The day you left the city, he rode a horse and barged into my yard."He took our girl from my hands and pushed her into the lake right in front of me! Then, he smashed the last thing my mother left for me! And do you know what he said? He said that even if I died, you wouldn't care. Let alone a child."I was reminded of that day, and I broke into maniacal laughter. Perhaps I really had gone mad after all.Shocked, Alicia stepped back, and she shook her head. "No. You're lying! This is a lie, Michael!"The sight of her losing her composure made me calm down instead. "I'm not. Our daughter is dead, and the killer is your belov

Yves lunged forward and shoved Alicia back. The headpin buried itself in Yves' shoulder instead. He fell into Alicia's arms and pointed at me in disbelief, his voice shrill and grating. "He's gone mad! He tried to kill you!"Alicia's eyes narrowed, and she seemed confused. "You tried to kill me… for her?"She looked at the man in her arms, then back at me, still glaring at her with murderous hatred. Fury and panic took over her heart. She pushed herself forward, grabbed me, and forced me to meet her eyes."You want to kill me?"She did not see that coming. I grabbed my headpin tightly and lashed out again. "You ruined everything I had, Alicia! Go to hell!"She grabbed my shoulder. "You owe me, and you want to kill me?" Her roar pierced my ears, but I laughed. What a joke. This woman had the gall to blame me when her own mother was the one who orchestrated that attack. They had paid no price at all. Meanwhile, my entire family had died for their scheme. I held on for so long a

I dreamed of flowers and Alicia. She stood near me, and when she saw me, a beautiful smile lit up her face.I approached her, and she gave me a hairpin. Her eyes were filled with something earnest. "Will you come with me, Michael?"In my dreams, I cried until my eyes were red, and I nodded. "I will."It had been an eternity since she smiled at me like that, but it was the same overly beautiful smile that told me this was just a dream.I was still in a daze, and someone seized my hand. My eyes openedAlicia was sitting beside my bed. Her brows were tightly furrowed, as though worry had become permanently etched into her face. Her grip on my hand was so strong that I could not pull away.It almost looked like she cared about me. When she realised I was awake, happiness flickered through her eyes, but she quickly forced it down and looked at me coldly. "You're awake."My whole body was in pain. Hoarsely, I asked, "Where's my sister, Alicia?"Her eyes darted away. She could not
