The roar of the crowd rattles through the rink before I even step onto the ice. The boards tremble under their boots, the kind of thunder that seeps straight into your chest. I roll my shoulders once, then again, trying to shake the tension that’s been sitting there all damn morning. The locker room still smells like sweat and that sharp tang of disinfectant. Casen claps my back as we line up at the tunnel.

“Let’s make it clean,” he says, grinning the way he always does before a war.

“Clean doesn’t win against them,” I mutter, gripping my stick tighter. My palms are already sweating inside my gloves.

Skyskaters wait at the other end, helmets glinting under the floodlights. Brandy stands in the middle of them, jaw tight, eyes locked on us like he owns the ice. He probably thinks he does. The last time we played them, he took out Liam’s shoulder. No penalty. Not even a warning.

  • A NERD FOR THE HOCKEY ALPHA   ~110 :Calla

CallaI feel it again—the pull that refuses to go away no matter how much I try to bury it. It sits there quietly, just waiting for the wrong moment to remind me that I’m not as over him as I keep pretending to be. It’s stupid. It’s pathetic. I tell myself I’m fine, that I’ve moved on, but one small thought of him and everything inside me shifts like a bruise I keep pressing on just to feel something.I try to distract myself with schoolwork, filling every gap with something that forces my mind to stay busy. Labs, anatomy charts, endless study notes. My dorm looks like a crime scene of sticky notes and highlighters. But even with all that noise, sometimes I catch myself zoning out, my pen tracing the shape of his name at the corner of my notebook before I even realize it. I always cross it out fast, like I can erase what it means. But it doesn’t go away.Ronan hasn’t spoken to me since that night, and I told myself I wouldn’t be the one to break that silence. I meant it, I really did—

RonanI don’t even think about it too long. The thought keeps hammering in my chest, louder than the music still ringing in my ears from the crew house. I tell myself to wait, to cool down, but I know I won’t. I can’t. By the time I realize it, I’m already outside, hoodie pulled up, breath fogging in the night air as I walk fast down the street. I could’ve driven, but I needed to feel every step, every restless ache. Her apartment isn’t far since I took a taxi, but it feels like it takes forever. My heart’s pounding the whole way, not from the walk, but from what I know I’m about to do. I’ve tried to bury it under games, under practices, under smoke and drinks and noise, but it doesn’t go away. It never goes away.I get to her building and my stomach twists, nerves and fire all tangled up. I stand at her door, hand hovering over the wood. For a second I think about turning back, but my fist knocks before my brain catches up. One, two, three knocks, sharp enough to echo. Her voice come

  • A NERD FOR THE HOCKEY ALPHA   ~108 :No Face-Off Yet

RonanThe tournament bracket gets posted on the big board in the arena lobby, the glass frame shining under the lights like it’s meant to taunt me. Everyone crowds around it, pointing, whispering, taking photos on their phones like it’s the script for the rest of their lives. I don’t need to get close to know what it says. Casen’s already blowing up the group chat, Liam too, both acting like this bracket guarantees something.Me? I stand back with my hands shoved in my hoodie pocket, chewing on the inside of my cheek while I pretend I don’t care. But my stomach’s tight.Silverthorn on one side. Icewolves on the other side. The bracket basically screams at everyone to imagine the two of us colliding in the final. All the reporters, the bloggers, the fans…they’re already writing their headlines. They want the face-off. They want the rivalry. They want me and Wyatt locking eyes on center ice like it’s some gladiator shit.I tell myself it’s just noise. Just the usual hype. But I feel it

  • A NERD FOR THE HOCKEY ALPHA   ~107: Icewolves Dominate

RonanThe air inside the arena is heavy with noise, the kind of buzzing chaos that rattles through my helmet before the puck even drops. It’s the conference tournament, first round, and Icewolves are seeded number one. Everyone expects us to dominate, and we do. I can feel it in the way my skates dig into the ice, the way the stick moves in my hands like it belongs there, an extension of me. My chest is tight, not with nerves but with focus, with all the rage and drive I’ve been carrying since Calla walked away. Every ounce of it pours out here. The other team doesn’t stand a chance. They’re scrappy, trying to keep up with us, but from the first period it’s clear we’re faster, sharper, hungrier. Casen slices down the left, sends the puck across, and I catch it clean, firing it past the goalie before he can even react. The red light flashes, the crowd roars, and my teammates slam into me, shouting, helmets knocking together. It doesn’t do much for me, though. Scoring feels like breathi

  • A NERD FOR THE HOCKEY ALPHA   ~106 :Silverthorn’s Rise

CallaThe sound of the TV fills the living room, even though I’m not really paying attention. Ava’s curled up on the other side of the couch with her legs tucked under her, scrolling through her phone like she’s not even aware there’s a game on. She only put the sports channel on because Blaire asked her to, not because she cares about hockey.“Silverthorn’s up by three already,” Blaire says with a dramatic sigh, her eyes glued to the screen. She’s leaning forward, elbows on her knees, hair falling around her face. “Their offense is ruthless. Look at Wyatt, he’s skating through them like he owns the rink.”I bite the inside of my cheek and keep my gaze on the screen, though it stings a little. I didn’t want to watch this game. Honestly, I didn’t want to watch any of them. When the Conference tournament started, I told myself I’d stay out of it. No cheering, no highlights, nothing. Because every time I see Ronan’s name scroll across the bottom ticker, it’s like my chest gets punched fr
