The woods were silent.

Too silent.

Number 4 was shaking. Her tiny hand was still in mine.

Her mark was glowing faintly. Red.

"I saw it too," she whispered. "The crash."

Kai was scanning the trees. "We have maybe 10 minutes before he tracks us."

Number 2 was bleeding. But she sat up straight. "That wasn’t a memory. That was a recording."

"What?" I asked.

"Viktor made us watch it," Number 2 said. "Over and over. He said it was proof you killed them."

I looked at Number 4. "Did it look... real?"

The forest was frozen.Luna. Walking. Away from me. Toward him."Luna?" My voice cracked. "Baby, what are you doing?"She stopped. 3 feet from Viktor. Still wouldn’t look at me."Good girl," Viktor said. He reached to ruffle her hair.Luna ducked. And drove her elbow into his stomach.---Viktor doubled over. "What—"Luna turned. Ran. Straight into my arms."I’m not his," she whispered in my ear. "I’m yours."I squeezed her so tight. "I know. I know."Behind us, Kai, Vex, Elder Nia, Number 2 — all out the door now.Viktor straightened up. Face red. "You little—""Don’t," I said. My mark flared. White light. "Touch her again and I’ll end you."Viktor laughed. "You? You can barely control that power.""Watch me," I said. The ground shook.---Moonlight poured from the sky. Even though it was day.It hit my mark. Hit Luna’s. Hit Number 2’s.Three beams. One circle.Viktor stumbled back. "What is this?""The truth," Elder Nia said. She stepped forward. "Moon magic isn’t yours to own. It

"Over and over. He said it was proof you killed them."I looked at Number 4. "Did it look... real?"She nodded. "Mom was screaming. Dad tried to swerve. Then..."She couldn’t finish. But I saw it again behind my eyes. Tires. Glass. And a man standing on the side of the road. Watching. Not helping.Viktor.---"He caused it," I said. The words tasted like ash. "He’s been lying for 20 years.""Yeah," Number 2 said. "And he’ll do it again. To Number 4. To anyone."Number 4 looked at me. "Are you mad at me? For being his?"I pulled her into a hug. "No, baby. You were a kid. He lied to you."She

The lights were off.Only moonlight through the window.Viktor stood in the doorway. And behind him: a little girl.6 years old. Pigtails. My sweater. My face.---"Number 4," Number 2 whispered. "Don’t—""Shut up," Viktor said. He didn’t look at her. "Lila. We need to talk."The girl looked at me. Her eyes were mine. But scared. Empty."Hi," she said. Small voice. "Are you my sister?"My chest cracked. "I... I don’t know."Viktor stepped forward. "She’s Number 4. The last spare. And she’s malfunctioning.""Malfunctioning?" Kai said from behind me. He’d followed me."She keeps asking questions," Viktor said. "About her parents. About why she has to practice. About you."He put a hand on Number 4’s head. She flinched."So I thought," Viktor said, "maybe if she met you, she’d understand her purpose."---"Her purpose?" I said. My voice shook."To replace you," Viktor said simply. "In case you die. In case you refuse. In case Moon magic needs a vessel."He knelt to Number 4’s level.

I didn’t sleep. How do you sleep when there’s a photo of you with Viktor? Dated tomorrow.Kai found me at 3am. Still on the porch. Notebook in my lap."You’re shaking," he said.I showed him.The photo. The handwriting. The new mark.Kai went dead silent. "That’s not you.""Looks like me," I whispered."That’s not you," he said again. Firmer. "Viktor’s lying.""Then why is it dated tomorrow?" I said. "And why is the mark the same?"Kai had no answer.---By sunrise, the whole council was in our living room.Elder Nia held the photo with gloved hands. "This is old magic. Blood magic. He could’ve glamoured someone to look like you.""Or," Vex said, "he found her. A twin. A clone. A sister."The room went cold."I don’t have a sister," I said."Do you know?" Elder Nia asked. "Your parents died when you were 2. Records from that time are... messy."Messy. Right.---We went to the mill. The notebook was gone. But the new mark was on the floor. Burned into the wood. Identical to mine.Ve

    ### CHAPTER 51: ECHOESThe rift screamed. Not sound. Feeling. Like nails on my soul.Through the tear in the air: faces. Kids. Women. Old men. Reaching. Screaming. Mouths open but no sound."Echoes," Viktor said. "The ones Moon magic broke."He looked at me. "You did this. Every time you used it. You cracked the world.""Lie," Kai said. He was already moving. "Vex, seal it!"But Viktor was faster. He grabbed my wrist. Pulled me to the rift."Close it," he hissed in my ear. "Or I push you in."---Cold. So cold. The echoes were pulling at me. Hands made of fog. "LILA!" Kai roared. He hit Viktor. Knocked him back.Viktor laughed. "She can’t close it. Not without giving something up."Vex was chanting. Wards flaring. "It’s not a Gate! It’s a wound! From all the times Moon magic was forced!""Then we heal it," Marisol yelled."With what?" Viktor said. "Blood? Life? You have to give the magic back."He looked at me. "Your magic, Moon."---I understood. My mark was burning. Not with

The Jumbotron flicker lasted 2 seconds. But I saw it. Viktor. Smiling. No one else in the stands noticed. They were watching Kai.Kai scored. The crowd cheered. He looked up at me and winked.I couldn’t wink back. My hands were shaking. After practice, I pulled Kai aside. "Did you see the screen?""What screen?" he said, toweling off."The Jumbotron. Viktor was on it."Kai went still. "You sure?""Yes," I said. "And he texted me. Last night."I showed him. `Chapter 50. You’re not done yet. - V`Kai cursed. "We have to tell the council. Now."---The council room was full.Elders. Betas. Marisol. Vex. Even Coach was there.Kai told them everything. The motel. The fight. The Jumbotron. The room was silent. Then Elder Nia spoke. "He’s taunting us.""He’s taunting her," Kai said, nodding at me. "This is about Lila."All eyes turned to me."Why me?" I asked. "I’m not even—""You stopped the Gate," Elder Nia said. "You marked an Alpha. You beat Viktor in Red Pine. In his eyes, you’re th
