Nearly three hours later, Eva was finally en route to the party. Her pulse was racing and she was trying her best to stay calm so she didn't leave sweat marks on her dress.
She'd tried calling Daniel again and again, but every call went unanswered. She knew he had gone to the house since his Ralph Lauren tuxedo was missing that she had brought back from the laundromat.
"Maybe he's busy," she told herself, trying to stay calm. "Wait until he sees me. He won't believe his eyes," she smiled to herself as she continued to steer her car down the open road.
Half an hour later and she was turning into the lot, her breath hitched. Luxury cars gleamed beneath the lights like sleeping beasts. The place was packed.
She stepped out of the vehicle, her heels clicking against the pavement as she made her way to the grand entrance. The security guard barely glanced at her before waving her in, recognizing her immediately. "It's lovely to see the beautiful Mrs. Daniel Thomas again. Enjoy your night madam," he bowed and Eva swallowed hard at that title. It still felt so sacred.
Inside the grand ballroom, everything looked elegant and expensive. Eva glanced around and walked toward table number two, the sound of her heels tapping softly as she moved.
"Mrs. Thomas, you're finally here," Mrs. Harper greeted with a polite smile.
"Sorry I'm late," Eva replied, embracing her lightly while her eyes roamed the room.
"Better late than absent," Mrs. Boone quipped, sipping something amber and expensive.
"Come sit," Mr. Harper offered, pulling out her chair.
Eva sat slowly, fidgeting with the strap of her dress. "Where's my husband?"
"I think he went to the bathroom," Mrs. Boone said, her tone indifferent.
Eva could tell something was wrong by the way Mr. Harper was wiping his face and avoiding her eye contact.
Eva nodded, trying to suppress the growing unease in her chest.
Just then, the microphone screeched slightly, commanding silence. Mr. Boone was on stage.
"Ladies and gentlemen, may I please have your attention," he announced with a booming voice. "Tonight, we not only celebrate our continued success at Rhodes Enterprises, but we also honour our new Vice President - Mr. Daniel Thomas!"
The crowd erupted with claps and cheers. Some ladies were laughing heartily while a few gentlemen whistled with excitement.
Eva's eyes shot to the stage and there he was. Daniel. Confident, proud. Dazzling in his tuxedo. He hadn't noticed her yet, but it didn't matter. She was here now. This was their moment.
"Thank you," Daniel began, his voice smooth, and somewhat charming. "It's a privilege to be recognized tonight. I couldn't have reached this far alone. Behind every great man is an even greater woman."
Eva's heart swelled. 'He sees me. He knows I'm here,' she smiled on the inside.
"There's someone who's been the reason behind my ambition, the fire behind everything I do. She stood by me, believed in me, and I wouldn't be the man I am without her. Please give a warm round of applause...for the beautiful Vivian Lincoln."
Silence.
Then, a ripple of gasps.
Eva blinked, confusion filling her every thought.
What did he just say?
Who was he talking about?
Daniel's hands were gestured towards the entrance of the ballroom and every head turned in that direction.
Vivian Lincoln was tall and radiant, with a smug attitude that showed as she strode confidently toward the stage.
Eva's breath caught in her throat.
Vivian threw her arms around Daniel, and then he kissed her.
On the lips.
Opened mouths and tongues and everything.
A ripple of whispers and stunned gasps trickled through the crowd. All of a sudden the room felt shaky and Eva's pulse thundered in her ears.
No. No, no, no.
She rose with her legs trembling beneath her, but she forced herself toward the stage like she was moving through a nightmare.
She reached them. Her voice was barely audible, "What the hell is this?" she asked, prying Vivian away from her husband.
Vivian turned to look at her with her eyes flashing with hatred. "Don't touch me, skank," she snapped loudly, her voice amplified through the microphone.
Gasps exploded across the room.
Eva stared at her husband. "Skank? Daniel, are you really going to stand there and let this woman talk to your wife like that?"
He looked at her with disgust.
"Yes," he said. "Because as of tonight, I don't consider you my wife anymore."
Eva stumbled back a step.
"What?" she whispered.
"I'm leaving you," Daniel said. "I want a divorce."
The crowd fell into a stunned silence.
"But why?" she choked out, tears brimming at her eyes.
"You think I would still want a woman who has been cheating on me throughout our entire marriage?" he raged out, and the crowd was now looking at Eva for answers.
The weekend flew by as quickly as it came. Eva dropped Elijah off at school and handed his teacher, Miss Bell, some scrumptious chocolate chip cookies she had baked the day before. While she was married, Eva found that cooking and baking helped her cope with some of the abuse and trauma she had endured. In a sense, one could say it was her form of therapy. After making a few rounds in town and picking up two coffees, she headed to work. When she arrived, Leeann was busy drafting up some contracts on her computer. Since the masquerade party, they had gained 2,000 followers on their social media page, and people were reaching out with potential contracts and job opportunities."Good morning, Leeann," she greeted as she handed her one of the coffees."Good morning, boss. It's gonna be a long day," Leeann replied before taking a sip. "Thank you," she added with a smile, lifting the cup."What's new?" Eva smiled."Have you heard from Mr. Davis?""Not since the party. Why?""He was supposed
The next day, after picking Elijah up from his teacher's house, Eva decided to take him to the mall for a little fun. Leeann had promised to meet up with them after tidying up her apartment."We're gonna have a wonderful day together, Eli," she smiled at her son as they stepped through the mall's wide entrance. "So tell me, what do you wanna do first?""Umm..." Elijah's eyes scanned the massive space before landing on the food court. His face lit up instantly. "There!" he pointed excitedly.Eva chuckled. "Are you sure? You don't wanna save the best part for last?""Yes, Mom, I'm sure, sure, sure," he said, practically bouncing in place."Okay, let's go," she agreed, taking his hand as they made their way to the food area. After enjoying their meal, Eva gave them a fifteen-minute breather before heading to the play area, a vibrant part of the mall filled with activities tailored for children. There were lots of stuff to choose from, like rock climbing walls, trampolines, jungle gyms, a
Dorian leaned back on the couch, his gaze distant. The streetlights filtered softly through the curtains, casting a gentle glow on his contemplative face."I was adopted," he began, his voice barely above a whisper.Eva turned to him, her eyes searching his. She sensed the weight of the memories he was about to share."My mother was an Italian immigrant," Dorian continued. "She came to America at seventeen, seeking a better life. She found work at a prestigious hotel. She was working there for about a year when she met a man. He was older and very charismatic. She never told me his name, only that he was unlike anyone she'd ever met."He paused, collecting his thoughts. "There was a storm that lasted three days, flooding the roads and trapping them together. They spent that weekend in a whirlwind of passion. Even though it was brief, I could tell she fell deeply in love with him."Eva listened intently, her heart aching for the young woman in his story."When the storm cleared, and th
The night ended on a high note. Mark got extremely drunk and almost fell into the six-foot cake he had made for the celebration. He was taken home by Stanley, with a bimbo on his arm.Daniel kept his eyes on Eva the entire night. She knew he was feeling regret, it was plastered all over his cheating face.Eva didn't care. She spent the rest of the evening with Dorian, smiling, blushing, and making sure Daniel saw everything.Chelsea was also drunk, and they could tell that Leeann was a bit tipsy too, so they decided to take them home. Eva and Dorian exited the event, walking hand in hand and cuddled up to each other. The drive to Chelsea's place was a bit chaotic. She puked twice, almost urinated on the back seat of Eva's car, and kept calling out for Leeann. They had to show her that Leeann, who was knocked out, was right beside her. After dropping Chelsea off and tucking her in, Dorian notified her mother, who lived in the apartment next door. She spent the rest of the night with he
After the song ended, Eva and Dorian stood in the garden, in silence, looking into each other's eyes. The feeling was like magnet to steel, because they both felt the undeniable attraction, the irresistible pull that kept drawing them toward one another.Eva yearned to be kissed by him. She wished she could feel his warm, luscious lips against hers, and for a moment, she thought her wish was about to come true, but it didn't. Instead of pulling her closer, Dorian created more space between them.It was then that she realized the air was no longer humid, and she was becoming a bit chilly. Eva hugged her body and rubbed her hands against her skin."Are you cold?" Dorian asked, beginning to take off his jacket."A little bit," she said with a slight shiver."Here," he said, offering his jacket and wrapping it around her body."Thank you," she smiled."My pleasure," he replied in a low, husky voice. His voice did something to Eva.She felt like she could melt into his arms and listen to h
Dorian's heart fluttered in his chest when Eva stood. She then accidentally bumped into him, and it felt like déjà vu. He caught her before she fell backward."Are you alright, beautiful?" His voice came off smooth and manly."Yes, I'm fine. Thank you for catching me, and sorry for bumping into you," Eva apologized.Dorian knew it was her. Eva. She wore the same perfume after all these years, plus her voice was the same, but more confident and way sexier."It's my pleasure, Holly," Dorian replied with a mischievous smirk. "Or should I say Eva," he smiled. He then slowly removed his mask."Flint," Eva gasped as she held her chest. She couldn't believe he recognized her.He looked even better than she remembered. Tall, sharp-jawed, with dark curls and a half-smile that sent warmth straight through her."It's actually Dorian," he told her. "Dorian Rhodes.""My Dorian? I mean the person I've been talking to over the phone? You're the owner of Rhodes Enterprise?" she questioned."Yes, yes,
