Penulis: Flying Dragonling

Chapter 1

Penulis: Flying Dragonling
Scalding broth dripped down my wrist.

My entire right hand was swollen and blistered, the skin badly burned. The acrid smell of scorched flesh filled the air.

The coldness in Blair Carter's eyes finally shattered. She grabbed my wrist. "Greyson, are you seriously willing to risk your life over a pocket watch just to fight him for it?"

Pain shot through my palm. My whole body trembled, but I refused to let go.

Seven years ago, after my father, Samuel Reid, was sentenced, I ran everywhere looking for help, hiring lawyers and submitting appeals.

But my father was just a freight truck driver with no connections, the perfect scapegoat in their eyes.

The Carters didn't even need to show up in person.

A single word from them was enough to make lawyers refuse my case, get the relevant authorities to stop accepting my appeals, and silence everyone who might speak up.

That was when I learned that in the face of power, an ordinary person's life was worth less than a scrap of paper.

Later, to uncover the truth, I took my mother's surname and concealed my real identity, becoming the man Blair knew as Greyson Hayes.

I became her lover first, then gradually worked my way up to become her husband.

I'd taken a knife for her and stood by her through the hardest days of her power struggle. I was just one step away from bringing my father home.

"Get a doctor!" Blair roared toward the door. She took off her suit jacket and tried to wrap it around my hand.

I moved away from her and hid the pocket watch behind my back.

Her hand froze in midair, and her expression darkened. "Give it to me."

"This was my mother's. When Nolan shoved me and snatched my watch, you did nothing. Now I've managed to get it back myself, and you still want to hand it to him again?"

Blair hesitated for a moment.

However, Nolan Pierce came over with reddened eyes and gently tugged at her sleeve. "Blair, I didn't know it was Greyson's mother's keepsake.

"I just thought it looked nice and made an offhand comment. If Greyson didn't want to give it to me, he could've just said so. Why deliberately injure himself and make everyone think I was bullying him?"

With those two casual sentences, Blair's gaze turned impatient again. "Tonight is Nolan's welcome-home party. You've already made enough of a scene."

With that, she forcibly pried my fingers apart. The wounds split open, and blood instantly stained the pocket watch.

I gritted my teeth. Even when she had nearly pried open my last finger, I still refused to let go.

"I can give him anything else." I stared straight at her. "But not this."

Her hand paused for a moment.

Then Nolan suddenly clutched his chest, his face turning deathly pale as he staggered backward.

Blair immediately released me and caught him securely in her arms. "Nolan!"

Supporting him, she hurried away. As she passed me, she tossed out a cold warning, "If anything happens to him tonight, I won't let you get away with it."

I watched her retreating figure and suddenly laughed.

'Blair, you'd better remember what you said today. Once my father's name is cleared, there will never be an "us" again.'

Blair instinctively pulled Nolan to his feet and turned toward the exit.As she passed me, she paused for a moment.I lay amid the flames and thick smoke, looking at her. "Blair, are you choosing him again this time?"Her body stiffened.Beside her, Nolan was coughing painfully. "Blair, it hurts so much..."With a deafening crash, a burning steel beam came crashing down from overhead. In the end, Blair turned and shielded Nolan with her own body, dragging him out of the cold-storage warehouse. Before the smoke choked me into unconsciousness, all I heard was the shrill wail of sirens in the distance. When I woke again, three days had passed.Conor was sitting beside my hospital bed, his eyes bloodshot. "The police rescued you. The location and recording you sent me helped them get there in time."The first thing I asked was: "What about Daniel?""We found him." Conor handed me a tablet. On the screen, Daniel sat in a hospital bed, admitting that the Carter family had forced

"Call the police immediately and submit the files to the prosecutor's office.""We're already working on that. But these documents only establish that there's reason to suspect your father's signature was forged. To overturn the conviction completely, we still need direct witness testimony.""Daniel Mercer." I lowered my voice. "Fairmont. Winding Hills Care Facility."The moment I finished speaking, I heard a faint sound outside the door. I immediately hung up.The next second, the bedroom door opened.Nolan walked in alone. He was carrying a bowl of oats, wearing the same fragile, harmless smile as always. "Who were you talking to, Greyson?"The doctor lowered his head and slipped out. The door closed behind him.Nolan set the bowl on the table and sighed softly. "Samuel is already dead. Why won't you give up?""Because the real killer is still alive." I stared at him. "Your father killed twelve people. The Carter family covered up the evidence and shifted all the blame onto m

By the time I was brought back to Cloudwater Bay, daylight had broken.Blair personally called for a doctor. When the doctor removed my bandages and saw the wound, he drew a sharp breath. "The burn has become repeatedly infected, and there are still shards of broken porcelain inside. He needs to go to the hospital for surgical debridement immediately.""I'm not going." I sat on the edge of the bed, staring out the window."If we delay any longer, you could suffer permanent damage to this hand.""Then let it be ruined."Blair stood in the doorway, her expression terrifyingly dark. "Everyone, out."After the doctor and the servants left, she walked over to me. "I've already sent someone to take care of your father's funeral arrangements.""I don't need you to handle them.""Greyson, what's done is done.""Get out!" Unable to bear it any longer, I grabbed a pillow and hurled it at her. The wound on my hand split open again, staining the pristine white fabric with blood. She fro

My father was dead. When those words were spoken, I didn't cry.I simply stared at Blair in silence, as though I'd suddenly lost the ability to understand what Conor was saying.A jumble of voices came through the phone. Someone was telling the family to collect the deceased's belongings as soon as possible. Someone else was checking the cremation paperwork.Standing beside Blair, Nolan spoke softly, "Blair, Grandpa is still waiting for you at the hospital. Let's go."I suddenly let out a laugh.Everyone froze. The harder I laughed, the more tears streamed down my face.Blair reached out to touch me, but I raised my hand and slapped her hard across the face."That slap was for my dad."A clear handprint appeared on her cheek, but she didn't get angry. She simply stared at me, her expression dark. "I didn't know he was...""You didn't know?" I laughed again. "Of course you didn't know."To your family, he was just a convenient scapegoat. You couldn't even be bothered to reme

Before I could answer, Nolan came up from behind her. He wasn't even wearing a coat, just a thin shirt, as though he'd hurried out after them."Blair, Grandpa Grant just found out that Greyson stole confidential company information. He had a heart attack and has already been taken to the hospital."Blair's expression changed instantly. "How is he?""They're still trying to save him." Nolan's eyes were red as he gripped her arm. "The doctors said he can't take any more shocks. If that information gets out, the Carter company will be finished, and Grandpa Grant won't survive it either."Then he looked at me inside the car. "Greyson, I know you want to save your father, but you can't sacrifice another old man's life for the sake of a criminal."I glared at him. "You knew all along, didn't you?"A flicker of smugness flashed through his eyes. "I have no idea what you're talking about."The transfer progress on my phone reached 89%.Almost there.Just a little longer!Blair had no

The rain grew heavier.Blair walked toward me step by step through the glaring headlights. Her black trench coat was soaked through, and there wasn't a trace of warmth on her face.More than a dozen bodyguards blocked the road, forming an impenetrable net around us.The taxi driver was so frightened that his voice shook. "Sir, w-who are these people?""Don't open the doors."I locked the doors with my uninjured left hand and inserted the chip into the card reader Conor had given me.The encrypted files on the chip were recognized, and a remote transfer page appeared on the screen.20%.35%.As I sent the files to Conor, I spoke urgently into the phone, "Apply for a stay of execution first!"The original dispatch records prove that the Carter Group changed the route at the last minute.
