It was 4 p.m. when they arrived home. Carolina assisted her mom out of the car and into the cozy two-bedroom home. Once they were inside, she set her up in the family sitting room and made her comfortable.
She adjusted all of the pillows on the couch, including her mother's, and made sure she had enough covers. Once that was done, she turned on her favorite television show. She picked up her backpack from the side of the couch, unzipped it, and got her laptop out of it. She sat on the loveseat opposite her mother and began studying. When she was finished, it was 9 p.m.
There was a knock on the door.
She looked across the room. Her mother was asleep. She had been about to get up and make dinner. She got up and headed in the direction of the front door. She looked out the little glass window on the door and saw it was her best friend, Noel.
They had been best friends since they were small children and had gone to the same church and now attended the same college. They even had a few classes together. U.S. government and Business Applications. She quickly opened the door, Noel leaped happily inside. Smiling wide, and carefree.
She hugged Carolina tight. The gesture made Carolina laugh out loud. Her happy energy had always been infectious. She hugged her back.
“What’s up with you? ” She asked Carolina, “I haven’t seen you on campus since you returned back home. You haven't returned my texts. Is everything alright?”
Carolina hadn't told anyone about her mother’s rapidly failing health, except for her school Counselor and Professors. She closed the door behind her friend and followed her into the kitchen. Noel immediately made a B-line to the fridge and pulled out two beers. She used her keychain to open them both. She gave one to Carolina.
Noel opened hers and took a sip of the cool beverage.
A few minutes passed in silence.
“So...Carolina. What the hell is going on with you?”
"I have been taking care of my mother," she confessed. "She has been ill for quite some time. It is getting worse. She was managing on her own, or so I thought. Until she had an accident."
“Oh, my gosh! Lina, I’m so sorry. Why didn’t you tell me? I would have been here with you.”
“Because mom didn’t want me to. I love her, but that woman can be so stubborn sometimes.”
“I’m your best friend and I’ll always be here for you.”
“Thanks, Noel. You always make my life easier just by being in it.”
“That’s what friends are for.” She chirped back.
They spent the rest of the night laughing, talking, playing cards, and baking vegan cookies for a charity event Noel was co-hostessing.
Carolina had just finished telling Noel about the operation her mother needed and the amount it would cost.
“Damn, 'Lina. That’s a lot of dough. Time to start your Queenpen empire.” Noel joked.
“That’s not a bad idea." Carolina Agreed. "My mother does have some medical marijuana. That she refuses to use. How much do you think that would go for ?”
“I have no idea. My guess is as good as yours. I can ask around though. What about stripping?” Noel asked.
Carolina and Noel laughed loudly at that. They both knew Carolina had absolutely no rhythm.
Carolina remembered her mother was asleep in the Living room nearby and shushed both of them. When they could both control their laughter Carolina Spoke.
“I don't have the rhythm or sex appeal for that. Did you forget about the time we went to the club and I was scaring men away with my bad dancing?”
“ohhh...I didn’t forget.” Noel chuckled.
They laughed again.
“What about webcamming? Girls these days can make $1,000.00 to $2,500.00 a week.” Noel whispered.
“If I wasn't still a virgin. Sure, but I don't see me losing it any time soon.”
“Wait a minute! I thought you weren't a virgin after dating Russ Evers. You two were always hugged up and making out.”
“That's one of the reasons why we broke up. Russ wanted more than I was comfortable giving. He was also cheating on me with Trish Goddard.”
“That skank!” Noel exclaimed, shocked at Carolina's admission.
“Exactly!”
“Well, I’m fresh out of ideas.” Noel looked at her watch then. It was past midnight. "I gotta go to school tomorrow and drop these cookies off for the charity. Are you coming?”
“I’m not sure. It will depend on how mom is feeling tomorrow. Noel, thanks again for coming and checking up on me tonight. It really means a lot.
“Oh, Lina. We’re besties. Next time no keeping secrets from me and no worrying. We will come up with something. I promise.”
She hugged her once more and left.
Carolina felt a little better about everything. At least her friend was on her side now. She had someone to talk to about all of this. She cleaned the kitchen. Once she was done, she checked on her mother one last time, making sure to turn the television off. She was sleeping soundly.
Carolina kissed the top of her head and went upstairs to her bedroom. Once there, she quickly got undressed and crawled into bed. She said a silent prayer hoping she would find a solution for the mess she and her mother were in. She closed her eyes and was welcomed dreamland…

Geo threw the fortune 500 magazine with his face on the glossy cover onto his glass table by the chocolate brown leather sofa inside of his Large office. He was the man of the hour. The businessman of all businessmen according to the world. Man of the year. Most innovative and self-made. All the buzz words they were using in conjunction with him was becoming ridiculous. He was just a hard-working man who was born into a family that had gained their wealth through illegal means.Because of his father's lengthy ties to organized crime, he got very little recognition for his legitimate business acumen. It felt like as soon as his father handed him the mantle the media couldn't get enough of him and his high moral principles and ideals, considering his ilk. It also didn't hurt that he was intelligent, street smart, and gorgeous. The untypical, business tycoon bachelor. He had had enough of all of this fake hero worship. He hadn't wanted nor expected
“What? What the- Ronny! What the hell.” “I’m sorry old boy. Well, actually, I'm not. You need this, and it’s really not as bad as I have made it sound.” He reassured him as he pulled a folded newspaper out of his inside jacket pocket and slid it on his desk in his direction. Geo snatched it up off his desk quickly. He scanned the Classified section. He saw where Ronny had circled the ad in red ink. It read; Looking for a companion. Must be well educated, single, female, and between the ages of 21-40. Initial interviews will be held at the Regal Hotel at noon. Business attire is required. Geo put the paper down on his glass desk and exhaled in relief. Ronny had been right. It hadn’t been as bad as it ha
Carolina’s mother, Karen, bathed herself and made breakfast. She looked and felt much better than she had yesterday.A few hours later, Carolina made her way downstairs and into the kitchen. The morning sunlight poured into the kitchen. She was wearing an oversized gray t-shirt with a black satin robe. “Good morning darling,” Her mother called to her when she saw Carolina enter the Kitchen. "I've made us breakfast. Come. Sit down. Eat.” She did as her mother asked of her. She sat down at the dining room table. Her mother sat across from her drinking a cup of freshly ground coffee while reading the newspaper.Carolina noted her mother had put the sections she wasn'
Her ex-boyfriend Russ had been texting her all week. He obviously wanted to make things right with her. They were newly broken up. Things were left unsaid. With everything that was happening in her life, she didn't feel like she could handle a relationship. There was so much personal power she was not willing to surrender to Russ. She did, however, trust him enough to allow him to lose her virginity. She picked up her cell phone after she was fully dressed. Today she wore an emerald green, long-sleeve sweater with a white T-shirt underneath. Faded jeans and her most comfortable pair of low-cut green Chuck Taylors completed the ensemble. She finally texted him back. His response was immediate. "Hi."
"Why? I thought this is what you wanted." She looked at him confused. "Isn't this the reason you were cheating on me with that slut Cherry?" "No. I told you I had been drinking. She took advantage of me, kinda like what you're trying to do now." "What! I have never done that. You invited me over." " I didn't think you would actually show up." He admitted. She was shocked at his admission. "Really?" There was a long pause. Russ spoke. "So we are getting back together?" "No." She said without hesitation. "Then why are you here?" He asked her.
Geo was on the phone with potential buyers from Hong Kong. He had studied mandarin and Japanese in his high school days. He was almost fluent in both languages. "I am honored to have your business until we meet next week." He said and bowed to them. They could see him on his office phone's pop-out flat screen monitor that was built into his desk. It was Geo's newest investment. He had enjoyed using it more than he had actually thought he would. He watched them return the gesture before disconnecting the call. The sleek monitor beeped twice, folded, and went back inside of the desk. His cell phone rang. It was Ronny's number. He decided to answer. "Speak." He demanded.
3 days later … Carolina pulled her car into the hotel parking lot. This afternoon she would be meeting and interviewing about the Companion position. If they liked her and her qualifications she would be hired. She hoped she didn't end up with some rich, bratty kid. She walked inside and immediately saw a sign that led her to the banquet hall. She opened the door on her left and saw about fifty uniquely beautiful women waiting in the large room. Everyone was dressed their best and seated as they had been instructed to do so upon entering the banquet hall. No one was talking. She noticed they were all attractive and around her age. She chose to sit in an empty middle row. There was a stage at the very front of the room.A few minutes passed and then a nicely dressed wo
She wanted to say no, but something wouldn't let her. "I can talk for just a moment. What's up?" It had been three days. Her mother's health was still doing really well. She had been able to attend class and this interview. It was a good feeling to be able not to worry so much about her or anyone. "Look, I'm really sorry about the other day. I didn't expect it. I ran into Noel the other day. She told me about your mom and how sick she’s been. How come you never told me, Carolina?” “I don’t know. I guess maybe I didn’t want sympathy.” "Why don't you come over tonight.” He suggested. “I really shouldn’t. You were right about me.” She admitted.
