Mia let out a gasp. She obviously couldn't believe what she just heard.

How could she when I still couldn't believe it myself.

"Bes." She called, her voice trembling. "I'm... I'm so sorry. Who... Did that to him?" She stuttered.

"I don't know who they are. It was my first time seeing them at our house... They looked like thugs." My lips quivered as I spoke. My heart was breaking into a million pieces.

"Why did you not call the cops, bes? You should have done that immediately." Mia admonished, grabbing my trembling hand in hers.

"I couldn't do it, Mia." I shook my head aggressively. "I couldn't leave or take my eyes away from him even for a blink of an eye." More tears slipped out of my eyes. "I think I lost my phone."

"They weren't putting on masks?" Mia caressed my hand softly, emboldening me to continue.

"No. I saw their faces. All three of them." I replied. How could I possibly not? Their faces were engraved in my mind and I didn't think it would ever fade. I knew I would never forget, perhaps until I have made every single one of them paid and the mastermind won't be left out, in fact, he was going to pay severely. "I was by the door when he was shot mercilessly. Before that, I wanted to go in, even though I knew I was powerless in their midst, but still I wanted to go in. To shield him at least, but he made me promise not to show myself. Till his last breath, he still had my best interest at heart. He wanted to protect me. He wanted me to continue my life. He wanted his dreams for me to... Come... True." I sobbed amidst words. The pang I felt in my heart kept getting more painful with every passing second. I felt weak, useless and hopeless. The only family I had left was snatched away from me so brutally.

Tears had already began to run down Mia's cheeks as she listened to my poignant narration.

"I must have lost consciousness, because I didn't know what happened after that. When I regained consciousness, I was on the floor. I looked around for my dad, but he wasn't inside the house. They took his body." I drew in a breath and a lump made its way to my throat, making it extremely hard for me to swallow. "I ran outside and fortunately, I was able to see their car. The same car I had seen on my way in. I shouted on the top of my lungs, begging them to bring him back to me. I wanted to be able to see him, at least one more time. I thought they were going to do as I wanted when the car screeched to a halt. It reversed in full speed seconds later and at that moment, without a doubt, I knew they weren't going to return him to me, but were planning to hit me with the car."

"Oh my God!" Mia gasped, her eyes widening, horrifically.

"I remained glued to my spot, until they were getting incredibly close. I didn't want to run. What was I living for anyways? My life had already been ruined. But recalling how ruthlessly he was killed, I knew I still had something to live for, so I turned to my heels and ran, but I wasn't fast enough, I was hit and that's how I ended up here." By the time I was done narrating everything to her, I could feel more tears forming in my nasolacrimal duct.

Wordlessly, Mia engulfed me in another hug. "I'm so sorry for your loss, Mia. I hope you forget everything s—"

Realizing what she was about to say, I aggressively pushed her away. "Forget? I'm never ever going to forget, Mia! I will make them pay for what they did to him. I will stop at nothing to see them fall to their knees, begging for a little mercy from me and that would be when I will have my laugh." I vowed, my voice dripping with venom. I was hellbent of avenging his death and I would stop at nothing to make my mission successful — it didn't matter what I had to do. I would gladly do anything. The moment my dad died, my conscience died along with him. "I will never have peace knowing my father's murderer are somewhere living their lives peacefully."

"Juliana, I know you are hurt but—"

"Don't even try to talk me out of this," Juliana warned. "I'm going to get mad at you. If you won't help me, you certainly shouldn't discourage me." I spat, feeling my insides burning with rage. I was ready to practically do anything to achieve my goal, even if it meant ending my friendship with Mia for no sacrifice was too great, and no deed was too dark as long as it brought me to my target.

"Don't take the law into your hands," Mia continued. "It won't end well. It never has. I understand that you are grieving and—"

"Please go, Mia!" I beseeched. I was very angry and I didn't want to say mean stuff to her. I respected our friendship too much for that. But I felt I would be forced to if she kept on trying to discourage me. My father was brutally killed right in front of me and she expected me to leave everything in the hands of the authorities. I was a tad disappointed in her because I felt she wouldn't have had the same mentality if the same thing had happened to her mother. I expected her to encourage me and not try to talk me out of it, but it didn't matter. I would still go ahead with my plans. My mind was already made up and no one would be able to change it.

I promised myself to make the mastermind pay for ruining my life.

It became my only mission in life.

Sergio's pov Nicole's words echoed in my head, each syllable a tiny bomb exploding in my chest. I couldn't comprehend what she meant but one thing was certain, I also wanted to explore the depth. Maybe even more than her. But that just wasn't my person. The mere thought of cheating on Scarlett was painful, almost impossible to bear. I wanted to deny it, to push her away but every thought seemed to fly through the window as I looked into Nicole's eyes, dark and intense. It was pulling me deeper and deeper. The pull was strong, I couldn't fight it. The air between us was filled with tension. Every fibre of my being yearned for her, for the feel of her skin beneath my touch. The memory of our stolen moment still fresh in my head. "Nicole, you don't understand the gravity of what you're suggesting," I finally managed to croak out. "Let's not start what we cannot finish." "I understand," she swallowed. "I'm not even asking for too much. I just want us to explore this...the connect

A sly smile spread across my lips as Sergio sat beside me. I loved the fact that he sounded so angry. "What did he say to you?" I wiped away the nonexistent tears from my face and shook my head. "He didn't say anything." "Nicole!" Sergio's voice was firm. "Look at me. Talk to me! Tell me exactly what he said to you!" That was my chance. I averted my gaze to him, making sure to fixate my gaze in his. Air fanned my eyes making tears instantly well up in them. "I don't know why Diego dislikes me this much. I thought we were getting along. I thought he liked me, but I've been wrong. This isn't even the first time he's treating me like I'm a nobody," I swallowed. "I know I'm not, but it still hurts when he reminds me of that all the time. He always finds ways to make sneaky remarks about me. Why? What's my offence? I didn't want to take your card but you insisted I do, I went shopping to get a few essential things I needed, and I end up being called a golddigger and a socia

"I don't know what you're talking about, Diego," I insisted. Diego shook his head, a knowing glint in his eyes. "I'm your brother, Sergio. I know you better than anyone else. Besides, I saw you leaving the room." Panic surged through me, but I forced myself to remain calm. I couldn't afford to be caught. Not now or ever. "I went there," I began, my voice steady. "because like she said, she had a breakdown and I went there to comfort. That was it." "I believe you," Diego said, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "You'd never do anything to jeopardize your relationship with Scarlett. You're also not that kind of person to cheat on anyone, let alone Scarlett. It's Nicole that I don't trust." His words sent a pang to my heart. Despite being guilty, I couldn't fathom Diego harboring such thought about Nicole, especially after she'd risked her life for our father. "Why don't you trust her?" I asked, anger creeping into my voice. "She saved Dad's life!" "I'm sorry to say t

  • A Quest For Vengeance    40: What Really Happened?

SERGIO'S POV Nestled in Scarlett's arms, I couldn't help but remember the illicit thrill I had experienced with Nicole last night while Scarlett was busy sleeping. Last night's kiss with Nicole had been a betrayal of everything I claimed to be, yet the memory lingered. I felt extremely guilty, but I couldn't stop myself. The thought of doing it again wasn't repulsive. In fact, just thinking about it made me suck my bottom lip involuntarily. This wasn't me. I wasn't a cheat. But there was something about Nicole that I couldn't put my finger on. Something alluring. I wanted to stay away, but the more I tried, the more I became drawn to her. It was as if I was trapped in a magnetic pull towards her. Scarlett's voice, soft and soothing, broke into my reverie. "Babe, I've been talking to you. Where has your mind traveled to?" The question was innocent, but it felt like she'd seen through me. I leaned in, my heart pounding a guilty rhythm as I placed a quick kiss on her lips. How

Rosa's squeal sent a jolt through me as she crushed me in a bear hug. "Oh my God, Nicole! Where have you been? Do you know how worried I was? I've missed you so much!" My arms snaked around Rosa's back, returning her hug briefly before I pulled away, a smile tugging at my lips. "I've missed you too." Rosa's eyes scanned me from head to toe, particularly my outfit. "You look different, Nicole! What's the secret? Tell me you've hooked a rich billionaire, babe!" I rolled my eyes. Rosa would always be Rosa. A golddigger through and through. I loved her though. She had been a good friend to me from the first time I started working at the coffee shop with her. Her heart was as big as her dreams. Her eyes widened in excitement. "It's true, isn't it?" I chuckled. "You could say that." She gasped, her eyes sparking with excitement. "You're lying!" "Of course I am," I playfully pushed her away. "Do these things even happen in real life? I have told you before to stop watchi

  • A Quest For Vengeance    38: What Happened Last Night?

Last night was like a dream. Waking up the next morning, the remnant of his cologne on my nightie filled my nostrils. I still couldn't believe Sergio was in my room, his lips meeting mine in a desperate and undeniably passionate kiss. A kiss that defied his pleas, his warnings about not jeopardizing his long term relationship with Scarlett. Now, who was the traitor? My reflection in the bathroom mirror barely registered as I splashed cold water on my face. The events of last night couldn't stop playing over and over again in my mind. For a fact, I knew Sergio had feelings for me. It was pretty glaring, the lingering gazes said it all — I was also certain that even Diego could tell. I had seen the way he looked at us whenever Sergio and I were in the same space, Interacting. It was always almost as if he had something to say to us, but always kept it to himself. Or at least always tried to keep it to himself — but I didn't know he was going to act up on it. I had always been a
