Chapter 2

Author: Summer Sway
I summoned all my might to push the heavy cabinet off me. Pain plunged into me like a blade several times. However, it wasn't a big deal compared to the agony I endured in my last life.

Serena slumped to the ground in shock upon seeing that. "Raiden, you jerk! The hospital director will never forgive you for this!"

She was the only person who knew my true identity in this hospital. Alas, her words only garnered a more heartless, taunting response from Raiden.

Raiden sneered, his tone full of disdain. "Won't forgive me?" He clicked his tongue. "Ridiculous! Celia's the only daughter of Lumley Medical's chairperson. The director will never forgive me if anything happens to her!"

I struggled to climb out of the gap between the cabinet and the floor. The wound on my leg had been ripped open in the process, my blood staining every inch of my body. Even so, I couldn't care less. I had to live!

There wasn't much time left, so I shouted at Serena at once, "Stop begging him to save me! Get out of here!"

I would never forget the moment Raiden poured gasoline on me in my previous life. His eyes gleamed with insanity. There wasn't a hint of love when he looked at me, only boundless hatred.

As he lit me on fire, he didn't care about my cries and screams, much less the baby I carried.

Only then did I realize he had blamed me for Celia's death all those years. He hated me deeply…

Before I could snap out of those painfully deep memories, Serena had already ignored the flames and ran toward me. "Hang in there, Winifred!"

The thick smoke left me coughing nonstop. My vision had also blurred, and I could only see Serena's small frame. "Have you freaking lost your mind? Get out of here!"

Serena ignored my curses. She gritted her teeth, exerted tremendous force to lift the upper half of my body, and dragged me out of the laboratory step by step.

The scorching air roasted our skin. Even a handful of Serena's hair had been seared, the end of those burnt strands glowing faintly. Despite that, Serena didn't seem to be in pain while dragging me ahead.

Conflicted emotions stirred in my chest as I peered at her side profile, which had been stained with ash.

I struggled to raise my hand and look at my watch. There wasn't much time left. We would die here if we didn't leave now.

With a deep inhale, I forced myself to stay conscious while shouting, "Serena, let's jump out at the count of three! You keep yourself safe and don't worry about me. You got it?"

Serena answered without looking back at me, "You can shout at me all you want, but I'm not letting you go!"

That warmed my heart, and I no longer wasted my breath. I fixed my eyes on the laboratory door. It was our only hope of survival.

"Three! Two! One! Jump!" I shouted at the top of my lungs. Then, I didn't hesitate while leading Serena to jump out the door.

A deafening explosion rang behind us almost as soon as I charged out the door.

The overwhelming impact sent me rolling on the ground. It felt like my eardrums had been shattered. All I could see was the color white and nothing else. I also couldn't hear anything save for the endless ringing after the explosion.

"Winifred! Winifred, are you okay? Can you hear me?"

I didn't know how long had passed since, but Serena's anxious voice eventually filled my ears. I tried hard to open my eyes and reply, "I'm fine… It's just my leg…"

Serena glanced in the direction of my lowered gaze. "It looks awful! Stop looking at it! I… Wait here for me!"

After saying that, she frantically ran off.

It wasn't long before Serena rushed back with a few of our colleagues and a stretcher. Our colleagues' expressions shifted once they saw the wound on my leg.

One of the younger male colleagues exclaimed, "My God! H-How many sutures will it take to close those wounds…"

My entire body ached, as though it were falling apart. Yet, I remained conscious the whole time.

Celia's case was soon brought to court. She was ultimately sentenced to one year in prison, and her medical license was revoked. Even so, she was eventually released from prison early for good behavior.Raiden, on the other hand, was kicked out of our hospital by my dad. Other hospitals dared not hire him, either. He was once a decently well-known doctor, but he became a person that everyone despised.…My body mostly recovered a year later. I returned to work at the hospital after gaining Dad's approval. Little did I expect to see Raiden again on my first day back.Raiden seemed suspicious, wearing a cap and a mask as he entered the hospital.Serena's lips curled with annoyance. "Does he seriously think nobody will recognize him if he dresses up like that?"I froze in confusion, which caused Serena to inch closer and smirk. "You don't know, do you? He has that disease now." She snickered. "Our hospital's the best when it comes to treating that, so he has no choice but to come

That was when my dad uttered something to his phone.Shortly after, someone suddenly opened the conference room door. Dad's assistant came in with a solemn expression. Behind him was an ashen-faced upper-class woman. The woman's strict gaze scanned the conference room before landing on Celia. "Ms. Lumley? She's the Lumley family's heiress, huh?""M-Mrs. Lumley…" The executives shot to their feet at once. They then tremblingly stared at my dad while speaking. "We have to keep this private, Mr. Zalmer. Our hospital can't afford to lose Lumley Medical's support!""Yeah… See? Even Mrs. Lumley has come here in person…"Dad snorted, lit a cigarette, and took his time exhaling a smoke ring. "Take a good look, Mrs. Lumley. Is Celia your daughter?"When Celia heard the words "Mrs. Lumley", her face paled even more. She couldn't help but lower her head and quiver in fear, not daring to meet the wealthy woman's eyes. The woman eyed Celia from head to toe with disdain before scoffing. "My d

The executives looked at each other before avoiding my dad's eyes. Dad's face had darkened like coal as he flicked his hand, motioning Serena to do her part.Serena instantly switched on the big projector in the conference room.A high-quality footage soon filled the projector screen. It was none other than the laboratory's surveillance footage from before the explosion. All color drained from Celia's face. Her lips quivered as she shook her head fervently. "N-No! No way! Didn't the hospital explicitly prohibit us from installing surveillance cameras in the laboratory?"Dad shot her a glare. "This laboratory has always been a gift from me to my daughter! It's her personal laboratory, so why would I need to report to you if I installed any cameras in it?"Raiden's eyes grew wide as he whipped his head in my direction. "What…"I remained emotionless while speaking indifferently, saying, "Serena told you about it once."Tension filled the air just then, and the room was deadly si

Dad came to check on me in the ward after wrapping up the urgent matters he had on hand. He had bloodshot eyes, and his beard was a scraggly mess. Concern and exhaustion showed on every inch of his face."Winifred… How did this… It hasn't been that long since I went abroad… How did this…" He was so choked up that he couldn't speak. His hand trembled as he caressed the bandage around my face. At the same time, his brows wrinkled with worry.I could no longer hold back my tears after seeing my dad, who seemed to have suddenly aged all at once. In my last life, I had wrongly placed my trust in Raiden. It caused the hospital run by my family, the Zalmers, for over ten years to end up in others' hands. We lost all our assets and wealth. My dad couldn't take that blow, so he fell gravely ill and died not long after. As for Raiden, he stepped on the destruction of my dad's life and my family's career to advance in the medical world. He became a newly revered figure in the industry.Ho

The argument inside the ward had gotten so bad that the people outside began gossiping."Say, Dr. Zalmer should let it slide since she's fine now. What could be more important than the future of her boyfriend?""If I were her, I would just tolerate the slight grievance of being left in the fire for someone else. After all, I'd get to enjoy a better life once Dr. Seager becomes more successful."Serena whipped her head around to thunder at those nosy onlookers outside. "Stop spewing unfounded nonsense! That's not what's happening. Mr. Zalmer will hold a formal interrogative meeting tomorrow. Let's see who'll eat their words tomorrow when the truth comes out!"Raiden had always ignored Serena, but just then, he finally looked her in the eye. He frowned, asking, "What are you talking about? What do you mean by 'interrogative meeting'?"Serena put both hands on her waist. She kept staring at Celia as she stated, "That's exactly what I said! Someone here also knows how the explosion ex

I passed out before I could get a better look at my dad. It was already the evening the next day when I awoke. My limbs were wrapped in thick plaster and bandages, which prevented me from moving one bit. Despite that, I felt brand new."Winifred!" Serena was worn out but still lunged to my bedside with excitement.I wanted to wave back at her, but I only felt pain when I moved my arm.Serena tensed upon seeing me like that. Tears rolled down her cheeks at once. "You idiot! Do you know how badly injured you are?"A frail chuckle left my lips. "A-At least I managed to live…"I didn't owe Raiden anything in this life. My dad and I wouldn't die now."Oh, you!" Serena cried but also couldn't help laughing. While grabbing some tissues, he said, "I've told your dad everything. He was so livid that he ordered everyone to hold a conference to confront everyone about what happened."I could no longer hold back my tears once I heard that. After all, Raiden's grudge against me ultimately
