Chapter 2

Author: Pocket
A sour feeling filled my chest, but I still spoke. "I'm not giving you the design drafts. And I agree to end the engagement."

Willa's expression darkened as she stared at me. "Fine, Shane. I'll grant you that. Just don't regret it later."

With that, she left with Aaron.

I had barely reached the gate when a voice called out.

"Shane."

I turned and saw a neatly dressed woman walking toward me.

"I heard everything. Are you alright?"

Amber Archer had been a scholarship student sponsored by my family.

She'd moved out after Willa and I had gotten engaged, saying it would be inappropriate otherwise.

This was the first time I had seen her in three years.

I didn't want to linger on anything. I just shook my head. "I'm fine. The engagement is ending soon anyway."

Amber hesitated, then patted my shoulder. "Don't be upset."

I looked at her. "Shouldn't you be congratulating me for finally escaping a miserable relationship?"

She met my eyes, then laughed. "You're right. Congratulations on finally escaping."

Talking to Amber eased the tightness in my chest, but the moment I stepped inside the house, I found Willa and Aaron sitting in the living room putting on a show.

Willa's eyes glistened as she looked at my parents.

"Mr. and Mrs. Dalton, you've watched me grow up. You know I've always been softhearted. I treat Aaron like my own brother. I want him to win the design competition so he can have an easier path ahead.

"Shane doesn't need that kind of prestige anymore, but he's jealous of Aaron and refuses to give him a chance. I have no choice but to ask for your help."

I never imagined she would drag Aaron to my parents' house to smear my name. I couldn't believe my ears. Not only did she twist every fact, but she also made herself sound perfectly righteous.

My father slammed the table. "Shane, what have we taught you? Why can't you show a little kindness?"

My fists clenched. Willa, seeing their reaction, grew even bolder.

"By the way, that ring design Shane made earlier… Could you give it to Aaron too? We're all one family anyway."

I cut her off. "I'm not your family. Get lost!"

My mother looked at me, then at Willa. She finally said, "Willa, that design was Shane's hard work."

When she realized she wasn't getting her way, Willa dropped the act instantly. Her face twisted as she pointed at my mother.

"You always say you treat me like your own daughter, yet you can't even give me a single design draft? Aaron is basically my brother, and I'll be the Daltons' daughter-in-law. Everything the Daltons have includes a share for him. You won't even give me a draft? That's ridiculous!"

My eyes widened. I couldn't believe she would say something that shameless.

I wondered if I had been blind all these years. How had I ever liked someone like her?

No wonder she felt no guilt demanding my designs. In her mind, the Daltons' entire estate was already hers.

I let out a cold laugh. "Do you think everything you set your eyes on automatically belongs to you?"

Willa turned to my parents. "If I don't agree, the Quinns won't proceed with the marriage alliance. I suggest you hand over the designs now, or don't blame me for what happens next."

Her arrogance almost amused me. Had she forgotten that the Daltons were one of the four major families, and the Quinns were nothing but upjumped nouveau riche?

If I hadn't liked her, she would never have been my fiancée at all.

No, she hadn't forgotten. She simply never understood. She really thought I chased her all those years for the Quinns' money?

My smile faded. "You seemed confused. The Daltons don't need a marriage alliance with anyone."

The moment she heard the mockery in my voice, fury flashed in her eyes.

"Shane, it seems I've been far too generous with you. Just wait. I'm going home right now to tell my parents I'm ending this engagement.

"Let's hope you don't come crawling back to beg me later."

Aaron stepped in with false concern. "Mr. Dalton, maybe you should apologize. It isn't easy to land someone like Willa, a real rich and pretty catch."

I shoved his hand away. "Get lost. My business doesn't need your advice."

After they left, my parents watched me nervously. I dialed my lawyer with complete calm.

"Prepare a termination of engagement agreement. And have the Quinns return everything they've taken from the Daltons."

Aaron refused to back down and yelled, "You were the one who couldn't resist temptation. Why are you pretending to be the perfect girlfriend? Please!"I had to admit, I admired his courage. Even now, he still dared to provoke Willa. In my heart, I felt sympathy for him.To my surprise, Aaron staggered to his feet and started fighting with her."Willa, did you really think I wouldn't hit a woman?"The scene descended into chaos. The competition was far grander than I'd expected, and the organizers had even arranged a live broadcast. The moment viewers saw Willa, many jumped to defend her. But now, after everything, public opinion had flipped completely."So, these two were the real guilty ones all along. I feel sick thinking about how I'd defended them earlier.""So, the woman cheated and had the nerve to blame her boyfriend? Is there no justice left?""These two losers deserve each other. I hope they stay together forever."Willa had no idea what the Internet was saying. More

"Even if Willa finds out, so what? She loves me so much that she could never leave me," Aaron added.Willa let out a sharp scream."No! This is fake. Turn it off!"But the video did not stop.Aaron's voice kept playing. He sounded as if he were comforting the woman in his arms, and every word dripped with contempt for Willa."Me? Love her? As if."She has no grace at all. She only cares about herself. How could I possibly love a selfish woman like her?"You're different. Only you make me feel like a real man."I was only using Willa. I never thought she'd be this stupid. It's hilarious."Tears slid down Willa's face uncontrollably. She had never imagined that all her devotion would raise a mongrel who bit her in return.I asked quietly, "Are you still going to help Aaron deal with me now?"Her bloodshot eyes locked onto mine. Her lips trembled as if she wanted to speak, but in the end, she said nothing. She simply turned and opened the storage room door, then gestured for m

I had told Willa before that her behavior was wrong. But every time she'd pout or act cute, I'd soften immediately. She openly fought the supposed injustice of the design competition for Aaron, suggesting in public and between the lines that I had used my connections to steal his work. She even accused me of having an improper relationship with Amber and cheating during our relationship. She was a minor celebrity and a blogger with a polished, rich-girl persona, and with her influence, I suddenly became the enemy of the Internet."What kind of man would cheat on Willa? Is he insane? Has he looked in a mirror? Does he deserve our goddess?""He even stole someone else's work. Does he have no shame? How did his parents raise him?"Others rushed to defend Aaron."How pitiful. He finally had a chance to succeed, and someone snatched it away.""These rich heirs are awful. Good thing Willa spoke up for him, or no one would have known the truth."Aaron even posted a long message tha

My parents looked torn as they saw my expression.A moment later, Thomas spoke."I've already scolded Willa. She's young and rash, and she shouldn't have ruined the engagement between our families so casually. Young people say things they don't mean. She hasn't slept well for days because of Shane. We've been worried sick, which is why we came to discuss whether the engagement can continue."Willa hadn't slept well? A wave of pure disbelief rose in my chest.Who was the one screaming at me at the competition earlier if she had been sleepless with worry?"That depends on Shane," my mother said softly. She had never liked Willa from the beginning, but she could never talk me out of it and had forced herself to accept her.If the engagement could be dissolved now, it would undoubtedly be the best outcome. But she didn't want to make things harder for me.Her quiet support warmed me. I looked at Thomas and said firmly, "Let's void the engagement. Willa is an adult. I believe e

Willa suddenly turned toward Amber. "And who do you think you are to question me? At the end of the day, Shane and I are the ones who belong to the same family. Only I would know these details."Her words clearly stung Amber. She was a woman who cared deeply about pride and dignity.I stepped in front of her without thinking."Willa, if I remember correctly, our engagement is already over. Amber is like my sister. I won't allow you to slander her."Maybe it was because I had always been mild-tempered, but Willa didn't flinch.Instead, when she saw Amber and me standing together, she let out a cold little laugh."Like your sister? A real sister, or something else? Shane, you're so hypocritical."The way people looked at us began to shift, but I searched my conscience. All those years of dating, I had never once betrayed her. I had even cut off every woman who ever showed interest in me just to avoid upsetting her. She, on the other hand, kept testing my limits for Aaron's sa

  • A Saboteur on Her Knees   Chapter 4

Amber walked in slowly, her heels clicking with each step.Every gaze in the hall shifted to her, yet she showed no hint of panic. The organizers, seeing only a young woman, hesitated. One of them narrowed his eyes, "Miss, you said you have evidence?"Willa's reaction was pure anger. She had never gotten along with Amber, resenting that a mere scholarship student could surpass her in so many things. She glared and snapped, "What are you doing here? Get out!"Amber didn't even look at her. She went straight to the organizers."I have evidence that clears Shane's name."A flicker of unease crossed Willa's face. She sensed the situation slipping from her control and immediately turned her temper on the organizers. "I told you to throw her out. Do you not understand me?"No one paid her any mind.Amber handed the sketchbook in her hands to the organizers."These are the drafts Shane drew when he designed the ring. I doubt Aaron can produce anything like this."The organizer
