Chapter 2

Author: Melon Seed
Ten minutes later, a photo lit up my phone screen.

It was a photo of Maya kissing George.

Attached was a text message.

[Thank you for giving my child his father back.]

I opened Maya's social media profile.

Her latest update was a video.

George was holding hands with a little boy while wrapping his arm around Maya's waist.

The child, the one George claimed had been aborted five years ago, was calling him daddy in a sweet, high-pitched voice.

My fingers turned rigid as I opened the tracking app on my phone.

Three years ago, when he begged to come home, he had installed it on his own device to prove his loyalty.

This was the first time I had ever opened it.

I checked the history.

Over the past three years, he had snuck out to see her one thousand one hundred and thirty-four times behind my back.

Every single night I felt guilty for flinching away from his touch, he had left our bed to find Maya the moment I fell asleep.

The earliest visit went back to three years ago.

That was the day I hit rock bottom.

On that day, Maya sent me her ultrasound on the anniversary of my miscarried child, driving me to stand on the edge of a skyscraper roof.

George dropped to his knees in front of me with bloodshot eyes, swearing on his life that he would never speak to her again.

Yet that very night, while I lay unconscious in a hospital room, he bought Maya and her son a forty-million-dollar mansion on the far side of town.

The next morning, he pulled a single red rose from the bundle of nine hundred and ninety-nine roses he had given Maya and placed it gently by my pillow.

Hickeys were still visible on his neck.

Back then, he swore he got bitten by mosquitoes while picking flowers for me.

I believed him. I was such a fool.

None of it mattered anymore.

I calmly tapped the like button on her post. I even left a comment.

[The kid is adorable.]

George's call came through a second later. His tone was harsh.

"What is the meaning of this?"

"It means I'm wishing you well. No need to thank me."

George let out a light laugh, instantly regaining his usual cool composure.

"If you're so jealous, why push me away in the first place?

"You want to regret it now? Too late!"

Over the next week, George made me the biggest laughingstock in our social circle.

He flew abroad with Maya to host a grand, public wedding ceremony.

After returning, he took her to high-society galas, events he had never allowed me to attend.

They wore matching custom designer outfits and couple's rings engraved with each other's names, behaving like starry-eyed newlyweds.

This time, I didn't lose my mind like I used to.

Instead, I took the signed divorce agreement straight to my father, Arthur Mercer.

"I will step aside for Maya.

"But you must promise me one thing. You will host a grand memorial for the tenth anniversary of my mother's death.

"You will publicly clear her name, state that she was your only legitimate wife, and move her remains into the family crypt."

Years ago, Maya's mother framed my mom as a homewrecker, leaving her to endure five years of relentless online harassment.

Before she died, my mom called me in tears, weeping over and over.

“Clara, please believe me. I was never the homewrecker, I'm the legitimate wife.”

This was the one thing my mother cared about most. Before I left, I had to clear her name.

My father, who doted heavily on Maya, agreed immediately.

On the day of the memorial, he kept his word and held a lavish event to set the record straight.

Despite being pregnant, I worked alongside the staff, ensuring every detail was executed perfectly.

As I walked past my father's study, Maya's soft weeping echoed through the cracked door.

"Dad, George, do you think Clara found out I killed her mother?

"We were arguing, and I accidentally pushed her down the stairs. I only did it to protect myself!"

Maya sobbed pitifully, repeatedly claiming how sorry she felt toward me.

My mind shattered. Blood surged up my throat, and I vomited a mouthful of crimson onto the floor.

No wonder my mother never ended her life during those five long years of online abuse.

No wonder she suddenly fell to her death right after Maya and her mother moved into the estate.

She didn't jump. She was murdered.

My last shred of sanity snapped completely.

I kicked the doors wide open.

I slammed my hand into Maya's hair, dragging her down and slapping her hard across the face.

"Clara! Have you lost your mind?!"

George's expression shifted into absolute fury. He roared and shoved me away with immense force.

My lower back smashed violently against the sharp edge of the solid wooden desk.

Warm blood instantly pooled down my legs.

The child I refused to give up, even if it meant my own death...

Was brutally murdered by his own father.

The court hearing ended in a stalemate.Neither Ethan nor I cared much about the sudden twist. The evidence was overwhelming. Even with George withdrawing his private complaint, those three would end up behind bars sooner or later. What I didn't expect was George signing marriage papers with Maya that very same afternoon.Immediately after obtaining the marriage license, he bound Maya hand and foot. He dragged her to the Mercer family cemetery, which he had rigged with heavy explosives. He sent a single message to my phone.[This payment settles the score for what they destroyed on our wedding night.]Receiving the frantic news, Evelyn and Arthur rushed to the cemetery. Seeing their daughter tied up over explosives, they collapsed to their knees."George, we'll do anything! Please, don't hurt our daughter!"George ignored their pleas. He instructed Austin to start a live stream, pointing the high-definition camera directly at Evelyn's face."I won't press the detonato

Ethan shifted slightly, stepping between us to shield me."Mr. Martins, your questions have nothing to do with this case."George's eyes turned instantly bloodshot. He glared directly at me."He's the guy, isn't he? The side piece you've been seeing?"Is he the reason you're divorcing me?!"I pushed past Ethan's shoulder and faced him calmly.I repeated the exact words he had once spat at me during my deep depression."George, what is your problem?"Does marriage mean someone has to stay faithful forever? Does marriage guarantee endless love?"Five years is a long time. You got sick of my emotional outbursts, and honestly, I got sick of you too."Sick of him?George froze, repeating the phrase in disbelief."I'm sick of you acting so deeply devoted while holding someone else in your heart."George's face went blank. He shook his head repeatedly."Clara, it's you I love!"What happened with Maya was a setup!"I cut ties with her completely. Please believe me."I looked

George grabbed the thick stack of documents and hurled them directly into Maya's face."Are you feeling proud of yourself?"You, your father, and your mother played me for five straight years! You tricked me into raising a bastard as my own son! “And now a filthy illegitimate daughter like you thinks she deserves to be my wife?!"None of you are worthy!"His razor-sharp words made Maya's eyes turn instantly red.Yet she forced a tight, rigid smile onto her trembling lips."George, what crazy nonsense are you talking about?""Nonsense?"George slammed his hand around Maya's throat, his eyes burning with lethal hatred."Five years ago. On my wedding day."I never got drunk and mistook you for Clara. I never ruined your innocence."You spiked my drink! Then you deliberately engineered the scene so Clara would walk in and see everything!"Maya's eyes snapped wide in terror. She shook her head in a desperate panic."George, no! It's not true!"My feelings for you are real! I

Arthur frowned. He pulled up a scanned document on his tablet and forwarded the signed divorce papers directly to George's phone. His tone held a hint of annoyance."George, you already appended your signature."Why are you going back on your word now?"George's hands shook as he tapped open the file. The very document he had thrown at Clara's feet, thinking she would never sign, bore her sharp signature at the bottom.George reeled backward. The unwavering confidence he had maintained for twenty-seven years shattered into dust. While he was convinced Clara could never leave him because of her pregnancy, even flaunting his affair with Maya in her face, Clara had already decided to sever every tie with him.George couldn't hear a word Arthur was saying. He cut the call and dialed his assistant, Austin Barry."Find my wife."She just miscarried. She must be at a hospital somewhere."She is resisting me right now. If she tries to run, use whatever force is necessary to restr

George gripped his phone tightly. His hands trembled."How is that possible?!"I gave a strict order! No one touches that cemetery!"Then, as if realizing something, he let out a cold laugh."Tell me, how much did Clara pay you to put on this show?"She really stops at nothing just to get my attention. How laughable."Panicking, Mr. Luke fumbled to send over the security footage."Mr. Martins, I swear it's not an act!"I sent you the video. You can see for yourself."Just as the notification popped up, Maya walked over with a sweet smile. She took his arm gently."George, you promised to see Leo with me. Stop focusing on work."His finger hovered over the video, then stopped.George suppressed the rising unease in his chest. He shoved the phone back into his pocket without watching the clip. Then, he drove Maya home. The moment the front door opened, a three-year-old boy ran over. He wrapped his small arms around George's leg, calling him daddy in a soft voice.Maya p

I looked up in pure shock, my fingertips shaking uncontrollably."What are you going to do?"George sighed softly. His eyes held that familiar gentle warmth, but his words were mercilessly cruel."That cemetery is Martins family property."If you insist on playing tough, I'll flatten your mother's grave."I'll make sure she dies carrying the shame of a homewrecker, her ashes ground into the mud forever!"I stared at the man standing over me. It was as if I were looking at a complete stranger. He had personally walked that land with me to pick out the plot.He knew my greatest fear was my mother being humiliated by Maya and her mom even in death. To secure those few square feet of land, he had scoured every inch of the city. He spent three months consulting spiritual advisors just to select that private hill owned by his family.Back then, he held me near her headstone, whispering tender promises."Clara, trust me."This is Martins land.
