Madison

I trudged down the sidewalk, eyeing the heavy clouds overhead, which hung like a bad mood over the city. The weatherman had promised rain by evening, but so far, the sky had been just threatening without delivering—kind of like my social life lately.

I pulled out my phone and dialed Hazel, shifting my purse to my other shoulder as I waited for her to pick up.

"Madison Harper, as I live and breathe," Hazel's voice came through after the fourth ring. "To what do I owe this unexpected pleasure on a Tuesday evening?"

"Very funny. Are you coming or what? I'm almost at Caffeine Dreams." I sidestepped a guy walking his tiny dog, which yapped at me like I'd personally offended its ancestors.

"Coming where? Did I miss something?"

I stopped walking. "Please tell me you're joking. Jackson? Coffee? The plans we made last week?"

"Oh shit," Hazel muttered. "That's tonight? I totally forgot."

"How could you forget? You're the one who insisted we should hear him out!"

"In my defense,

  • A Secretive Deal with My Billionaire Boss   Chapter 356

MadisonI woke to the soft glow of morning light filtering through unfamiliar curtains. For one blissful moment, I lived in peaceful ignorance before reality crashed like a bucket of ice water. Alexander's penthouse. Alexander's bed. Beside me, Alexander Knight slept soundly, his usually severe expression relaxed in slumber. One muscular arm was flung carelessly above his head, the other resting on his bare chest. Oh god. What did I do? Memories from the night before flooded back with merciless clarity. The party. Jackson. Alexander's text asking me to stay. The whiskey. The kiss. My kiss. I had kissed him. Heat rushed to my face as I remembered how I'd practically thrown myself at him. How my hands had tangled in his hair, how I'd moaned when he'd lifted me onto the kitchen counter, how I'd begged him to— Stop. I needed to get out of here. Moving with exaggerated care, I slid from beneath the Egyptian cotton sheets. My dress lay in a crumpled heap by the door, and my underwea

AlexanderI stepped closer, unable to resist the gravitational pull she seemed to exert on me. "If it doesn't matter, why are we still talking about it?" "You're right." She reached for her glass and drained the remaining whiskey. "We shouldn't be talking about it at all." I watched her throat work as she swallowed, transfixed by the curve of her neck, the way the dress hugged every perfect inch of her. She'd worn that dress deliberately tonight. Not for Jackson. For me. "Another?" I offered, reaching for her empty glass. Madison hesitated, then nodded. "One more. Then I should go." I crossed to the bar, feeling her eyes on me as I poured another finger of whiskey into her glass. When I returned, she took it with slightly unsteady fingers. "You should slow down," I advised, noticing the flush creeping up her neck. "This is good whiskey. Meant to be savored." "I can handle my alcohol, Mr. Knight." She took another sip, defiance flashing in her eyes. "I'm sure you can, Ms. Harpe

MadisonWe rode the elevator in silence, the air between us charged with unspoken tension. In the lobby, Alexander guided me outside with a light touch at the small of my back that sent electricity up my spine. His Bentley waited at the curb, and his driver, John, was holding the door open. "Ms. Harper," John nodded, his expression carefully neutral. I slid into the plush leather seat, and Alexander joined me, sitting uncomfortably close. The door closed, sealing us in the quiet luxury of the car. "Did you enjoy the party?" Alexander asked as the car pulled away from the curb. "It was lovely," I answered automatically. My fingers curled around the soft leather seat of the Bentley, trying to ground myself. This was a bad idea. But something about Alexander's presence always clouded my judgment, making me agree to things I knew I shouldn't. The drive to his penthouse was mercifully short, the city lights blurring past the tinted windows like fireflies. Neither of us spoke; the sil

Madison"This party is insane," Jackson remarked, popping a chocolate-covered strawberry into his mouth. "Do you guys do this often?" "Knight Industries likes to celebrate success," I explained. "And Alexander's birthday is a company tradition." "Must be nice," Jackson chuckled. "My company's idea of celebration is pizza in the break room." I smiled, enjoying his down-to-earth perspective. "It does get a bit excessive." "Speaking of excessive," Jackson nodded toward the center of the ballroom where an enormous birthday cake was being wheeled in, complete with sparklers and a small army of servers. "Is that what I think it is?" "Time for the cake ceremony," I confirmed, fighting a grin at Jackson's expression. The string quartet began playing "Happy Birthday" as the servers positioned the multi-tiered cake in the center of the dance floor. The crowd gathered around, Alexander at the front with Katherine at his side. "Ladies and gentlemen," Alexander's father announced, "please j

MadisonI nearly choked on my water. "What?" "Come on, Madison. He's been watching you all night when he thinks no one's looking." Jackson raised an eyebrow. "And that blonde, Katherine, right? Keeps glancing at you too. There's clearly something going on." I glanced across the room. Alexander wasn't looking our way anymore; his attention was focused on the small group around him. His posture seemed tense, and his smile didn't quite reach his eyes. "You didn't answer my question about your boss." "Sorry," I snapped my attention back to him. "What about him?" Jackson leaned closer, lowering his voice. "There's obviously something going on between you two. The way he keeps looking at you..." "There's nothing going on," I said quickly. Too quickly. Jackson raised an eyebrow, clearly not convinced. "Right. And I'm secretly Batman." I laughed despite myself. "You're ridiculous." "Maybe," he conceded with a grin. "But I'm also observant. He's been watching you all night like a hawk

MadisonOnce we were safely out of earshot, Jackson leaned close to my ear. "You're a lifesaver. I now know more about yacht maintenance costs than any human should." I laughed, genuinely this time. "Happy to help. How's the rest of your evening going?" "Besides yacht guy? Pretty surreal. I just ate an expensive canapé." He shook his head in amazement. "This party is unreal, Madison. Is this what your work events are always like?" "Only the important ones," I admitted, accepting a fresh glass of champagne from a passing server. "Alexander Knight doesn't do anything halfway." "Speaking of your boss," Jackson nodded discreetly toward where Alexander stood with Katherine, "is that him with the blonde? He looks exactly like his photos, only more..." "Intimidating?" I supplied. "I was going to say 'smug,' but intimidating works too." Jackson studied them for a moment. "Is that his girlfriend? They look like they belong on a magazine cover." "That's Katherine," I said, the name still
