He tossed his jacket over a barstool. "Worried about being stranded with me?" His eyes raked over my body, making my skin tingle. "The helicopter returns whenever I want it to. One call is all it takes."

"And when would that be?"

"Tomorrow." He prowled closer, backing me against the kitchen island. "We're staying the night."

"Just one night?" The counter's edge pressed into my lower back as he caged me in with his arms.

His eyes darkened with amusement. "Not sufficient for you? We can always extend our stay another day." His thumb traced my bottom lip, and I fought the urge to bite it.

"Not like that." I tilted my chin up, meeting his gaze. "I was just asking."

"Mhmm." He leaned closer, his breath hot against my ear. "Because it sounded like you were hoping for more time alone with me in this very private, very secluded cabin."

"You wish, Mr. Knight." I placed my palm against his chest, though I wasn't sure if I meant to push him away or pull him closer.

Alexander"You're totally going back." Anthony grinned. "This is fantastic. Alexander Knight, reduced to stalking his ex-assistant in small-town Connecticut. I love it." "I'm not stalking her." "What would you call it?" "Persistent inquiry." "That's literally the definition of stalking, Alex." I glared at him, but he just laughed. "Look," he said, his tone softening. "I know you. You're stubborn as hell, and you don't give up when you want something." "Your point?" "My point is, figure out what you actually want. Do you want closure? An explanation? Or do you want Madison back in your life?" He met my eyes. "Be honest with yourself, at least." I stared into my coffee cup, watching the dark liquid swirl as I turned the mug. "I don't know." "That's the most honest thing you've said all morning." Anthony signaled for the check. "But here's the thing. Madison clearly moved on. She has a life in Connecticut, a café she built from scratch, maybe even someone new. You can't just wa

AlexanderI woke the next morning with renewed determination. Or maybe it was just stubbornness. Either way, I was going back to Connecticut. But first, I needed coffee and probably some form of intervention from someone who knew me well enough to tell me I was being an idiot. That someone was Anthony Williams. I texted him at seven. Me: Breakfast. The usual place. Eight o'clock. His response came immediately. Anthony: Someone died? Me: Just meet me there. Anthony: This better be good. I had plans to sleep until nine like a civilized human being. I arrived at the café first, claiming our usual corner table. The place was a hole-in-the-wall spot near the hospital where Anthony worked, serving passable coffee and excellent bacon. Anthony strolled in at 8:07, looking far too cheerful for someone who'd complained about waking up early. He ordered at the counter before joining me, sliding into the booth with a grin that immediately put me on edge. "So," he began, not even botheri

MadisonThe café settled into its mid-morning lull. A few customers trickled in and out, but nothing demanding. I used the quiet time to prep for lunch, checking inventory and planning tomorrow's specials. I reorganized the pastry case, restocked the cream and sugar station, and wiped down already-clean tables. Anything to keep my hands busy and my mind off yesterday. Off Alexander showing up after years like it was nothing. Off the way, my traitorous heart had stuttered when I saw him standing on the sidewalk. Off the fact that part of me had wanted to throw myself into his arms, while another part wanted to throw my coffee in his face. "Boss?" Mark's voice pulled me from my thoughts. "You okay? You've been wiping that same table for like five minutes." I looked down at the spotless surface. "Just being thorough." "Uh huh." He didn't look convinced. "Want me to handle the counter for a bit? You could take a break." "I'm fine." But I wasn't fine. My stomach churned wit

MadisonI poured myself a cup. "That was years ago. People change." "Some things don't change," Hazel countered. "Especially not Alexander's determination to get what he wants." "I'm not what he wants," I said firmly. "I never was." Before Hazel could argue, Ethan raced into the kitchen with his backpack. "Ready!" "Let me grab my keys." I set down my mug and headed to the entryway. The drive to preschool was filled with Ethan's chatter about volcanoes, dinosaurs, and his friend Adriel, who could already count to one hundred. "That's very impressive," I said, pulling into the preschool parking lot. "I can count to fifty-seven," Ethan announced proudly. "What happens after fifty-seven?" "Um." He paused. "Fifty-eight?" "Exactly right." I unbuckled him and walked him to the door, where his teacher, Miss Daisy, greeted us. "Ready for volcano day?" she asked Ethan. "So ready!" He hugged my legs briefly before racing inside. "He's very excited," Miss Daisy laughed.

Madison"I'm sure." The memory still stung. That little 'read' notification appearing within seconds. Then nothing. Days of silence that turned into weeks, then months. Hazel was quiet for a moment. "What if something happened? What if he didn't actually see it?" "Stop." I held up a hand. "Don't make excuses for him. He got the text. He chose not to respond." "Okay." Hazel raised her hands in surrender. "I'm just trying to understand why he'd show up now." "Because he's Alexander." I resumed pacing. "He doesn't like loose ends. I'm a file he forgot to close." Hazel studied me carefully. "You still love him." "I don't." "You're lying." "I'm protecting myself," I corrected. "There's a difference." "Is there?" I sank back onto the couch, suddenly exhausted. "It doesn't matter what I feel. He's engaged to Katherine. He has his life in New York. I have mine here." "Except he's not married," Hazel pointed out. "Five years engaged and no wedding. That's weird, right?" "That's his

MadisonAfter dinner, I supervised bath time while Hazel cleaned up the kitchen. Ethan splashed enthusiastically, creating tidal waves that soaked my sweater. "Mommy, can we read three stories tonight?" "One story," I countered, wrapping him in a towel. "It's a school night." "Two stories?" "One and a half." "What's half a story?" "You'll find out." I got him into pajamas and tucked him into bed, selecting his current favorite book about a dragon who was afraid of his own fire. "Mommy?" Ethan's voice was sleepy as I read. "Do you think my daddy would like dragons?" My heart clenched. "I think any daddy would be lucky to like whatever you like." "Miss Daisy at school says her daddy takes her to the zoo. Can my daddy take me to the zoo?" I smoothed his hair back. "Your daddy lives very far away, remember? But Grandma can take you to the zoo this weekend." "Okay." He yawned, eyes already drooping. "Love you, Mommy." "Love you too, baby." I finished the story to his soft sno
