Chapter 6- Nurse Emily

"So you are a lesbian? " There was ridicule in his voice 

       "I never knew I married a lesbain" He was staring fixedly at her as she stood in front of him in utter discomfort

      "I am not a lesbain' she replied uneasily 

She was looking down on the floor in order to avoid meeting his scornful eyes

"Then why are you hugging and kissing a felloe woman, if you are not a lesbain? 

 She was uncomfortablely aware that a relationship with an opposite sex was more admissible than the same sex which was regards as a "taboo" back in Nigerian 

Though there in London, it was the in thing but they were not Londoners 

       "It was not a woman" She replied rather guiltily 

Dr Ryan who had been battling to control his anger so as not to bear her, looked at her from head to toe with the feeling of revulsion ripping through him

       He was painfully conscious of the fact that if he touch her,he would be charged to court for assault and battery 

"I know it all along that you have been cheating on me Barring that I have been looking for a chance like this to catch you red handed"

       "Now the wind had blown,exposing the rumor of a fowl!

       "Your constant late coming from work, your lame excuses why you would not come back some night, your apathy towards your family all spoke volumes of your flirting around"

     "You took my love for you and my gentility for weakness, I will henceforth show you that am not s weakling"

       ''Till I decide on what to do to you because am damn sure you are going back to Nigeria,I will advise you to use your tongue to count your teeth "

  "You are an ingrate and shameless woman. Do not force me to regret the very day I paid your dowry"

  On sounding that grievous note of warning,hr stamped upstairs into his room

She flopped down into the nearest chair destesting herself , destesting everything about that very day!

   She did not have the mouth to talk back to him as usual because he caught her red handed

Aside from which she would have denied and lambasted him back

Throughout that night following her husband's threat ,Mrs Ryan lay sleepless for hours

Her mind preoccupied on how her husband would go back to Nigeria before her, After all she had achieved all she intended from him

Her mother beauty was then with her in London,Her three brothers were all undergraduates of notable London universities,

She in that case,reflected that that was the time to hit her husband real hard before he realized what was happening , to send him back to Nigeria before he would send her

But how could she do it?

One Friday evening she visited the office of her husband at the time she knew too well that he would not be at work

Luckily for her the busy activities that normally characterized the hospital had dropped off at that hour of the day

As a result of which the few nurses around had little or nothing to do

She approached one of the nurses at the counter who was Evidently a Londoner going by her looks and accents 

             "Please I want you to do me a favour" Mrs Ryan told the nurse in an imploring tone

  "And what is that supposed to mean Mrs Ryan? The asked. There was an obvious humility in her voice as she was talking to the wife of one of her bosses

       "It is a secret" she whispered coming closer to her

"What is that? There was inquisitivness in her tone of voice

    "Can you meet me at Queens hotel by 18:30 tomorrow?She asked

   At that period, another nurse walked past without looking her way

Mrs Ryan though, was silent during the time the other nurse ambered past

"18:30?

"Yes,by then you would have closed for work' Her eyes were obliging her

    "Okay,Mrs Ryan I will be there" she was pondering what the enormity of the secret was to have necessitated her meeting her at a hotel

   "Do not fail Me, let me have your phone number so as to remind you tomorrow"

  "Alright, have my number" her voice was conspiratorail 

      Taking her handset, ready to key in the number ,Mr Ryan nodded encouragingly for the nurse to call the numbers for her

"45785........ 

As the nurse called the numbers for hey, Mrs RYAN keyed them on her mobile phone

"Thanks"

"You are welcome ma"

       "I will be on my way now,and its nice meeting you"

 "Alright ma"

With that Sonia walked out while the nurse return to her work with curiosity

The next day at Queens hotel,which was a big hotel owned by a Nigerian woman

Mrs Ryan and the white sat in a secluded table discussing over their bottles of soft drinks 

"I want you to do me a favor"Mrs Ryan began, "You would be paid well"

"What is that? The nurse whose name was Emily asked in sheer eagerness 

She could not help thinking what the favor was as to attract the handsome payment 

There ensued an uneasy silence between them ,When Mrs Ryan having a sip of her drink was still undecided if she had made accurate pick of the person sitting opposite her or not

Although,she at last decided that there was no harm in trial.

"It is about a frame-up"she started deciding not to get into involving yet

      "A frame-up?' Emily asked in disbelief 

"Yes" she was still studying the nurse keenly for her reactions 

         "What makes you think I can do it?'

"Because I know you can, Mrs Ryan parried the question,sitting up

    "I have been studying you in secret for a very long time now,The unique qualities I have seen in you made up my mind for me that you are the right person I can count on" She lied because she had not been studying her

She could not help it,she needed to convict the nurse that she had strong faith in her,in addition to the rationale behind her faith in her

            "Really? She sounded unconvinced

She was contemplating about where and where they had met before for this woman to have been studying her

      "Yes,of course,A huge sum of money is involve"The older woman reminded her once more

          "Who do you want me to frame-up?'

"Can you do it?'Mrs Ryan enquired in order to make assurance double sure before spilling the beans

            "How much is involved?'

    "5000pounds, 250 pounds for a start with another 250 pounds after the deal"

    "Yes ,I will do it?' Emily agreed straight away on hearing the tempting amount of money involved,That amount was more than than her salary for six months

                 "Is that a promise?'Mrs Ryan asked,looking intently at her

   "Yes it is"

Unpleasant pause crept in between them ,At what time both of them sipped their drinks

         "Who is the person then? Emily asked again out of formality after the pause,wondering why the older woman found it difficult to mention the person 

       Mrs Ryan could no longer prevaricate, "My husband" she mumbled 

         "Your husband?' She asked in disbelief "That widely acclaim nice ,gentleman?

                  "Yes"

"You then must be out of your mind" She sputtered "Please count me out of this!

       "I know,but he's being unfair to me lately! Mrs Ryan maintained rather weakly 

        The nurse looked at the older woman sitting opposite her directly for a while before looking away

That was something strange about life ,The irony of life"she thought to herself

       A wayward woman being married to a discipline,exemplary gentleman! Despite the huge amount involved , charity's conscience could not let her hurt Dr Ryan for all the gold and silver in the whole world ,he has never offended her In any way

       "I am sorry mam,I cannot do it"Her voice was flat and firm

       "Why? Despite all the money involved?

Emily let out a loud laugh before replying "I would rather advise you to go home and take good Care of your God given husband"

        "That is the kind of man every rational woman has been praying without ceasing for,And you are here hatching evil plots against him! Madam you should thank your stars for the type of husband you have"

Mrs Ryan was mystified beyond words by the nurse's sudden reaction in spite of the tempting amount of money involved in order to induce her"

     She,however,thought that the nurse was trying to prove tough and needed more cajoling

         "I understand how you feel about my request ,you would not know what I have been going through ,He is only good outside whereas turning out to be demon inside.......

      "Not the man I knew too well" Emily retorted

"Surely not the man I have worked with for over a decade now,Stick to him and forget about sleeping around ,those men that sleeps with you will never marry you instead they are out to break your home"

          With those sarcastic and insulting remarks,Mrs Ryan felt highly offensive and dejected. She was about picking of fence when the nurse apologized all of a sudden 

      "Look madam,I did not mean to sound insulting,It is an advice.. shop around and sample out the hell other women are undergoing in the name of marriage,but yours has been rosy .

        "You have a nice man as a husband,you should nip in the bud any ill feelings you have against him,Anybody advising you to hurt that man must be a devil incarnate, who never meant well for you"

    With such a long sermon in the name of counselling,Mrs Ryan drew in a quick startled breath , She then knew that she had made the greatest mistakes of her lives for having toughy of the nurse at all and disclosing such a top clsdd secret to get

         "Let me increase the pay'' She added in a gesture of despair as if clutching at straws

         "Even if you pay me all the money in American reserve bank,I will not do it,please stop this screwy idea of harming an innocent man forthwith"

       "I will heed to your advice,will you also promise me one important thing? Mrs Ryan asked in spite of herself looking Evey inch disappointed

         "What is that supposed to be ? She asked keenly happy that she had bared her minds

     "That no other ear would hear of it"She pleaded all seriousness

        "I promise you with every blood in my vein that no ear would hear of it ,as long as you do not continue with these chimerical ideas of yours"

         Another fraught silence stood tall between the two women,,During the time the nurse downed what remained of her drink 

As a last resort,Mrs Ryan decided to increase the pay package so as to know if that would help change the nurse's mind

      "How about 6000 pounds? She asked 

"Thanks and good day madam"She said in a dismissive voice ,

     With that,she got to her feet as Mrs Ryan watched her walk away 

        For a while she nibbed at her fingertips and gnashed her teeth,thinking about her next move!

         The truth that the nurse turned down her offer did not hurt her so much as the upsetting fact that she was then privy to her secrets

 There was moreover nothing to guarantee her that the nurse would keep the secret intact as she promised 

    She blamed herself in silence for having opted for a nurse in the first place 

She arrived eventually at one irrevocable conclusion,as she gulped down her own drink,to have the nurse eliminated as the only way out of her predicaments,as the only way her secret remains intact 

     She smiled,waved at the waitress who rushed to her

"How much? She asked standing up 

      "120pounds ma" The fair waitress replied

"Here"she hands her the money and walked out of the hotel to her car then slowly she drives home
