Chapter 2

Penulis: Man D
Millie POV

Time ticked on, one agonizing minute after another.

Greyson's expression grew darker.

He picked up his phone several times, his finger hovering over the screen.

But each time, he settled back.

His jaw was clenched.

Then Mr. and Mrs. Winslet approached, their faces set in grim disapproval.

"Greyson," Mrs. Winslet said sharply, "when will the marking ceremony begin?"

"Just a little longer," he muttered, voice edged with impatience.

His fingers pressed hard against the gift box in his hands.

Mrs. Winslet let out a chilling, dismissive scoff..

"As expected from someone of such low breeding—no manners whatsoever. Even on a day like this, she dares to be late."

Mr. Winslet didn't bother to soften his tone.

"I told you, son, marrying a woman like that would only disgrace us. And now look, our family's become the laughingstock of the entire pack."

Greyson's lips pressed into a thin, tight line. He said nothing.

I had hoped that he would, at the very least, offer an excuse for me, or attempt some kind of defense.

But silence can wound deeper than words.

Eliza moved in, smoothly linking her arm through Mrs. Winslet's.

"Please don't blame Greyson," she said sweetly. "He's only guilty of caring too much. That woman simply fooled him."

Mrs. Winslet looked at Eliza, , a smile of profound relief spreading across her face.

"Eliza is so refined. That lowly creature doesn't possess an ounce of her."

"She thinks by keeping us waiting, we'll grow desperate and beg her to come," Mrs. Winslet scoffed. "Ridiculous."

Greyson's hand tightened around the box until the cardboard crumpled beneath his palm.

"Enough, Mother," he cut her off, , the tension in his voice barely controlled. "We made an agreement. Let's not forget that."

"Don't be upset," Eliza soothed, "Millie comes from a humble background, she doesn't know the proper rules.

"But Greyson, you really should keep her in line next time. Otherwise, she'll only embarrass you further."

Mrs. Winslet sighed, then turned to her husband. "We'll wait one more hour. If she doesn't show, Eliza will take her place. That's as far as my patience goes."

I knew they talked ill of me behind my back, but usually, I let it slide when I couldn't hear it.

Now, watching their undisguised contempt firsthand, my spirit felt pierced by a thousand needles.

Eliza reached for the crushed gift box in Greyson's hand.

She gave him a warm, proprietary smile.

"Open this, Greyson. Try on the gift I brought you."

He tore open the box. Inside was a watch.

His tightly furrowed brow finally smoothed out.

"It's beautiful. Thank you."

One glance, and anyone could tell, it was an incredibly expensive piece.

"Greyson, you've worn that cheap old watch long enough. Time to let it go."

Before he could react, she slipped the watch off his wrist and tossed it aside with effortless grace.

I cried out, a sound only I could hear. "Don't—!"

The watch arced through the air, dropping into a nearby trash bin with a dull clunk.

It landed squarely on my heart.

Greyson half-reached out to stop her, but in the end, said nothing.

That watch...

I had worked three jobs, saved half a year's salary, just to afford it.

To him, perhaps it was the most ordinary timepiece in his collection.

But the day he received it, he smiled brighter than I'd ever seen him.

"Thank you, Millie," he held me tight. "I'll wear it every day."

Yet only a year later, he let Eliza throw it away like trash.

Maybe it never meant much to him after all.

At that time, the past two years of waiting, hoping, believing—felt like a cruel joke.

I felt a sudden dampness on my face.

Tears.

I was crying.

Then Eliza's phone buzzed in her hand. A message flashed on the screen.

Her face went pale, lips trembling.

"What's wrong?" Greyson asked, reaching for her phone.

The screen was filled with messages sent from my number, each one a vicious insult directed at her:

[You pathetic slut. Hope you and your little bastard get run over by a car.]

[You don't deserve to live happy.]

[Give Greyson back to me!]

...

Greyson's gaze turned savage.

His knuckles turned white as he tightened his grip on the phone, threatening to crush it.

Eliza's breath came fast and shallow, tears flooding her eyes.

"Why... would Millie hurt me and the pup?" she chocked out.

"It wasn't me! Greyson, it wasn't me—!" I screamed, desperately tugging at his arm.

"I'm already dead..."

My voice cracked.

I fell, collapsing to the ground.

Eliza's eyes were wide and vacant.

She staggered backward, muttering under her breath, "Don't hurt my pup... He's just a child..."

She let out a piercing shriek, then spun and bolted.

Her heels clattered across the decorated platform, catching the crowd's attention.

"What happened to Eliza?"

"She looks utterly devastated."

"Is she scared? What in the world is going on?"

Mrs. Winslet rushed forward and caught her by the arm.

"Eliza! Tell me, what's wrong?"

Eliza gasped for breath, she handed the phone to Mrs. Winslet.

Her hands trembled.

Her knees buckled.

And she collapsed into Greyson's arms.

Greyson POVAfter Millie's burial, I walked back into her small apartment, my emotions a turmoil of regret and complexity. I was here to clear out her belongings, yet it took genuine courage just to walk through the door.Eliza was right about one thing. I had indeed betrayed Millie. What right did I have to call her the love of my life now? What right did I have to be the one cleaning up the pieces she left behind? The apartment was small—barely the size of my bedroom.Millie's possessions were sparse and simple, completely incomparable to the vast wardrobes of clothes Eliza owned. On the desk lay a notebook—her diary. My hand paused. I hesitated, then slowly opened it."They are together. Even though he says it's temporary, even though he says he won't love her, just thinking about their daily intimacy makes my heart hurt so much I can barely breathe...""She's pregnant. When he told me, his eyes were shining, but he didn't see my tears fall.""He set the date for our

If I had truly lost it, I would never have been able to forgive myself. After meticulously cleaning the watch, I fastened it back onto my wrist, never taking it off, not even when I sleep. It made me feel as if she was still by my side. After nearly two days drowning in despair, I forced myself to pull myself together. There were still things left undone—things that Millie deserved.I went down to the dungeon. The lights were dim and flickering, the walls damp, the air heavy with the faint stench of mold.As Eliza was from a noble family, I'd had her locked up, but I hadn't stripped her of her freedom. We sat at opposite ends of a long table."Why were you so cruel to Millie?" I asked. She gave a low, mocking laugh. "That low-born bitch was never worthy of being your mate.""Oh?" I met her gaze calmly. "Then who is worthy?"Eliza threw her head

Millie POVGreyson neither ate nor slept, and after a night of vigil, he looked utterly ravaged.A chill breeze ruffled my hair. I lay in the coffin while the witch chanted the parting spell over me.Greyson gently lifted my hand, pressing a kiss to its cold skin. Then, he drew out the sacred moonlight ring—the very heirloom for the Lady of the Winslet family—and slipped it onto my ring finger.Among the mourners, Mrs. Winslet bristled with indignation."Greyson, how can you give her the ring? What about your future mate?"He offered a mournful smile. "I won't need a mate anymore. My one and only mate is Millie."Mrs. Winslet's voice rose to a screech. "That's absolutely impossible! Don't forget your family duties, your pack responsibilities!""So what if I don't?" His gaze was cold, unwavering. "You already have the heir you wanted.""Don't attempt to control me with family or pack duties ever again."Mrs. Winslet fumed, storming off with the others. The cemetery grew q

Millie POVGreyson froze for a moment, snatching the bag from Beta's hands. The instant he unfolded the skirt, his blood-red eyes snapped toward Eliza."Explain this," he said, his voice icy, sharp enough to cut through the air. "Why is Millie's blood on your skirt?"The Beta continued, his tone low. "The skirt were found in a trash bin. Clearly discarded on purpose."Greyson gently laid me down and strode slowly towards Eliza. He grabbed her by the arm, hauling her up, his gaze locked onto hers like iron."Tell me. How did her blood get on your skirt?!"Eliza trembled, refusing to meet his eyes or stand straight. He slammed her against the wall. "No wonder I caught her scent on you earlier."Eliza looked desperately toward the Winslets by the door, her eyes pleading. The Winslets panicked, but dared not intervene or utter a sound.Greyson finally released her, letting her drop to the floor, and turned to Beta."Take her to the dungeon. Millie POVGreyson seized my hand in a panic, his voice cracking."This can't be real... it can't be..." he whispered, as if denial alone could make it untrue."Millie, are you playing a game with me? You hid just to make me search for you.""Look, I finally found you... The officiant is waiting for us... Let me mark you now..."The final words were barely a rasp, his throat too tight to form sound. He paused, then his hands suddenly began to trace my cheek, my shoulder, my fingers."You must be cold... lying here like this... the freezing floor..."He stripped off his suit jacket, carefully draped it over me, and pulled me tight into his chest."Do you feel any better?"His jacket carried his warmth; his chest against me was hot and steady. But I could never be warmed again.Outside the storage room, the Winslets and Eliza had arrived, hovering at the doorway.Their expressions were a complex mess of shock and fear.Mrs. Winslet buried her face in her husband's shoulder, frigh
