Chapter 3

Penulis: Waverly Moon
He looked at them as though they were a pair of filthy ants.

After a long pause, he finally spoke. His voice was flat and emotionless.

“Cutting ties? Too late.”

“If you want me to let you off, that’s fine too.”

He paused for a moment. His gaze fell on me, inspecting me like an object.

“From now on, your son will leave school and spend each day at the hospital, kneeling and praying for my daughter’s recovery until she wakes.”

My parents froze for a moment at his words. Then their faces lit up with wild joy.

“Yes! We’ll do it!”

They nodded frantically, as though this were a gift from the heavens.

“Thank you, Mr. Grant! Thank you!”

They got to their feet and tried to drag me along, murmuring nonstop.

“Did you hear that? Just kneel! It won’t kill you! This is what will save our whole family’s lives. You better do it!”

I yanked my hands free and stood on my own.

Back at home, I locked my door.

No matter how much they shouted or kicked at the door outside, I ignored them.

“Henry! You ungrateful brat! We raised you all these years. What’s so wrong with kneeling just once?!”

“Open the door, or we’ll drop dead right outside for you to see!”

I put on my headphones, blocking out all their vicious curses.

Three days later.

News broke that Evelyn had finally woken up.

They used a spare key to open my bedroom door and immediately dragged me out of bed.

“Hurry! Hurry to the hospital! Miss Grant is awake! Our good days are here!”

They dragged me all the way to the hospital.

At the entrance to Evelyn’s private ICU room, reporters swarmed, cameras and microphones flashing in every direction.

My parents shoved me through the crowd, pushing me to the very front.

The hospital room door opened.

Evelyn lay on the bed under the spotlight, pale and fragile-looking.

As she woke, her gaze swept past her parents and the reporters, locking perfectly on me.

For a moment, a flash of resentment flickered in her eyes.

However, it was quickly covered by a layer of tears.

She lifted her hand, wrapped thickly in bandages, and weakly pointed at me with all the strength she could muster.

“It… it was him…”

Her voice was quiet, yet through countless microphones, it carried clearly down the corridor.

The crowd fell silent instantly.

All eyes focused on me.

Tears streamed down her face like pearls breaking free of their string.

Through the cameras, she cried, “When the truck came at me, I tried to dodge it…

“It was him! He suddenly pushed me from behind!

“When I looked back, I saw him smiling… he was smiling…”

Just one sentence and the crowd went wild.

“What? It wasn’t negligence. It was a deliberate murder!”

“He’s a social scumbag! Look at his parents. They’re practically dying of shame! How could they raise such a monster?”

“Poor, jealous loser! Hating a rich girl like that? He’s disgusting and evil!”

My mother got furious, grabbed a handful of my hair, and yanked me to the ground.

“You murderer! I’ll beat you to death! Why would you harm our family?!”

My father was even worse. He kicked me over and over.

Then, along with my mom, they pinned my head to the ground with all their strength.

“Kneel! Apologize to Miss Grant for what you did!”

He screamed, pressing my head to the ground and hammering my back with fists like a maniac.

“I’ll beat this monster to death today! For justice!”

Blood quickly ran down my forehead, blurring my vision.

The pain and suffocating pressure hit me all at once. I felt like my bones were about to break under their blows.

Just when I thought I might die at my own parents’ hands, a sharp command rang out,

“Stop! Police!”

Uniformed officers pushed through the chaos, pulling my violent parents off me.

The lead officer, expression serious and calm, said, “Henry, please cooperate and come with us.

“We have new evidence in this case.”

“Having second thoughts now?“I’m just helping you finish what you started.”Their faces turned pale and then ashen, rendered speechless. In the end, when money was on the table, even that fragile bond of kinship could not withstand it.Their hands quivered as they signed their names on the agreement.I took the agreement, turned, and left without a trace of attachment.Behind me, their quarrels over money erupted into a fierce cacophony.Half a month later, I heard that Dylan was sentenced to one year in prison for perjury and defamation. My parents, trying to help him serve less time, spent the money I gave them on pleading with anyone who would listen. In the end, a con artist tricked them out of everything. They sold the only house they owned to pay off the debts. Finally, they were left to wander the streets. Some people saw them under the overpass, fighting with other homeless people over half a bun.As for me, I simply read about it quietly in the corner of a news r

One voice was Evelyn’s.The other was a young man’s — Jake Lowe. This recording had been captured in advance. I spent a thousand bucks hiring a locksmith to quietly open Jake’s car and slip a tiny recorder under his seat.It was my final gift to him.On the recording, Evelyn’s voice was sharp and venomous, a complete contrast to the fragile image she was projecting in front of the cameras at this moment.“This time, we have to make sure Henry can never get back on his feet. His expression was off when he saw us in the school alley that day. He definitely figured out something!”Jake’s voice soothed her, “Relax, Evelyn. I’ve taken care of everything. I’ve handled the truck driver, Tony. He’ll swear that it was Henry who orchestrated this.“And we’ll bribe that money-hungry younger brother of his to serve as a false witness, proving Henry stood by and did nothing.“Two crimes, served together. He’ll never get out of prison in his life.”The flashbulbs went crazy, aimed at Evelyn

The trace of greed and desperate hope in his eyes was slowly swallowed by fear then despair. He remembered Richard’s murderous gaze.He remembered what happened to pawns who outlived their usefulness.“Wah!”Dylan’s last line of psychological defense finally shattered. He clutched his head and let out a piercing wail.“It wasn’t me! It wasn’t me! It was her! Evelyn told me to do it!“She said if I stood up and accused you, she’d pay off my gambling debts and give me five hundred thousand dollars!“She said everything was arranged! She said you’d definitely go to prison! She said it was just prison, just prison!“I didn’t know… I really didn’t know she’d say you pushed her! Henry! I was wrong! I was really wrong!”His cries echoed violently in the small confrontation room.Through the one-way mirror, my parents witnessed every second of it, their faces bleached white with shock.Their faces turned as pale as paper. My mother’s legs gave out. She collapsed onto the floor.M

What they were met with instead was one police officer after another, hurrying past with increasingly grim expressions. The anticipation on their faces slowly gave way to unease, then confusion.…Less than an hour later, news came back from the hospital.Evelyn was indeed pregnant. The baby was six weeks old.It was said that the moment Richard heard the news, he flipped the entire hospital room upside down, nearly losing his mind with rage.He immediately ordered a total media blackout.Still, it was too late.Officer Zinn had already obtained the hospital’s official medical report. Then the second confirmation arrived. The vehicle forensics expert summoned overnight by the police examined the truck involved in the crash and reached a conclusion that matched my description exactly. The brake system had been expertly and discreetly modified to fail on a timed delay. This was not an accident. It was murder! The direction of the investigation made a stunning one-hundred-an

“Officer Zinn, my client Mr. Grant demands that the suspect undergo a lie detector test immediately, with the entire session recorded. We need to ensure procedural fairness.”“Of course.” Officer Zinn nodded.I sat expressionless in the interrogation chair, letting the technicians attach all the sensors to my body.Richard’s team of lawyers seemed pleased with my cooperation. The lead lawyer sat across from me and began the questioning. Each question was razor-sharp and full of traps.“Is it because of your humble background that you resent Miss Grant, who comes from a wealthy family?”“No.”My heart rate stayed as steady as a straight line.“Is it because you’re jealous of everything she has, things you could never have in a lifetime, that you wanted to ruin her?”“No.”“Did you feel a sense of accomplishment the moment you supposedly pushed her into the truck?”“I didn’t push her.”Question after question landed like blows.I answered each one like an emotionless machin
