Chapter 5

Penulis: Local Universe
"Not only your son's eye, but your kidney as well. Justin gifted them to me. You and your son are like a personal organ bank from Justin to us!"

Suzanne's face twisted with rage, and the wild gleam in her eyes almost made me lose my mind.

Nolan couldn't bear it. He pulled free from my arms and charged at Suzanne. "You wicked woman! You have no right to say that! You can't hurt Mommy!"

In a flash of rage, Suzanne yanked Nolan's ear and twisted it. "You little one-eyed fool!"

I lunged forward and shoved Suzanne as hard as I could.

Just as I brought my hand up to hit her, a sharp slap connected with my face.

Justin's face drained of color as he stared at his reddened hand from the slap.

"Claire, I didn't mean it…"

His eyes glistened with tears as he trembled, brushing my cheek gently. "Does it hurt? I really didn't…"

"Justin!" Suzanne cried, clutching his hand as tears poured down her face. "I'm so scared."

Marcus's eyes filled with tears as he clutched Justin's leg. "Mr. Ford, they're picking on Mommy and me."

The pain in Justin's eyes gradually faded, replaced by a heavy disappointment. "Claire, haven't I given you enough? Why do you keep going against Suzanne and the others? Calm down. I'll take Suzanne and Marcus somewhere else to stay."

As he walked away without a word, Nolan instinctively called out, "Daddy!"

Justin paused briefly but didn't look back. Once they were gone, Nolan gave up completely. He no longer cried or struggled. He simply pouted and blew softly at my face. "Mommy, does it hurt? Is it still sore?"

Nolan's worried gaze shattered every ounce of strength I had been holding onto.

"Nolan, it hurts so much. It really does."

Countdown: 5 hours.

I printed the divorce papers I had prepared and set them on the coffee table, so they would be the first thing Justin saw upon entering.

On the way, I received a photo from Suzanne.

She and Marcus were taking a selfie in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows of a luxury suite, and in the reflection, Justin could be seen carefully making the bed in the background.

I didn't reply. I quietly saved the photo and forwarded it to my lawyer. "New evidence."

Countdown: 3 hours.

I helped Nolan get dressed and led him in tidying up the toys in the room.

Countdown: 1 hour.

I took Nolan and headed to the airport by cab. On the way, I finally received a text from Justin.

"Claire, I was in the wrong last night. I let my impulses get the better of me. I've already said sorry to Suzanne for you. You and Nolan should avoid them as much as possible from now on."

He sent two elegantly wrapped gift boxes along with the message. "I bought gifts for you and Nolan. I'll be home soon."

Nolan glanced at my phone and coldly said, "Mommy, let's go."

I nodded and turned off the phone.

Meanwhile, Justin came home, drained from staying up all night. "Claire, Nolan, I'm back."

He frowned at the empty house as a sense of dread began to rise.

He reached for his phone to call, but as he turned, he accidentally knocked the documents off the table. "Divorce papers?"

Justin's face went ashen, and he almost fainted.

The doctor's urgent call came through immediately. "Mr. Ford, it's serious. Mrs. Ford has discovered our secret. The hospital has already received the lawyer's notice."

On the day of the trial, I held Nolan's hand and, as expected, we ran into Justin. His eyes were red and puffy as he stared at me."I'm sorry, Claire. I've failed you and Nolan. I promise I'll make it right from now on. Can you forgive me? I truly understand my mistakes. I'm a terrible person. I deserve this!" he said, sobbing uncontrollably. The proud, haughty Justin I had known was gone. Instead, he knelt in the street like a pitiful clown, slapping his own face while begging for forgiveness. "If you'll forgive me, I'll devote myself entirely to the family. I'll make it up to you properly, I promise."I suddenly remembered the first time after the car accident. Back then, Justin had begged me the exact same way, asking for forgiveness. The thought of the 99 days I spent putting up with him after forgiving him filled me with disgust.Just as we were about to enter the courthouse, Nolan suddenly stopped in his tracks.I turned back to see Justin clutching Nolan's hand, pleading s

Justin's expression shifted again and again before he finally shoved Suzanne's hand away in disgust. He stood, brushed at the wrinkles she had left on his sleeve, and said coldly, "Suzanne, if you want my help, then get the hell away from me."With that, Justin strode out of the office. When Suzanne was escorted out shortly afterward, her heart was still pounding with unease. His words echoed relentlessly in her mind. She dreaded that he would pin everything on her and the doctor to clear his own name.Given the Ford family's wealth and influence, that would hardly be difficult. Once suspicion took root, it grew fast. After wrestling with her fear for hours that night, she finally made the bold decision to run.As long as she escaped overseas, the police would never be able to track her down. She could start a new life with Marcus, even if it meant never coming back. That very night, she took all the money she had received from Justin, bought the earliest available flight, and

Justin frowned and hung up the call in irritation.Suzanne cast a quick look at Justin, then discreetly followed him.Inside the doctor's office, the doctor paced restlessly. "I warned you from the beginning that this was risky. You said you could keep it hidden. Now look at the situation. What are we supposed to do?" he asked nervously.Justin let out a long sigh."At this point, the only option is to run. Take the money I gave you, leave the country as soon as possible, and never come back."The doctor snapped, "Justin, do you think I am an idiot? If I flee now, everyone will know I did it. You aren't trying to throw everything on Suzanne and me while you save yourself, are you?"Justin's eyes darkened, and a faint killing intent flickered in them. "If I wanted you to be the scapegoat, I wouldn't need to go through all this trouble, and any random audit of the surgeries you handled over the years would expose everything."The doctor's face twisted as he shot back, "So what d

Suzanne held her phone tightly, her eyes alight with searing hatred."It has to be that bitch. She must have done something. Otherwise, he would never treat me like this. I should have made sure that slut and her little bastard were dead back then."After the plane landed, my phone started buzzing the moment I turned it on—dozens of missed calls and messages flooded in, all from Justin. At 7:00 pm, I received Justin's so-called apology. "Claire, last night was my fault. I was too impulsive. I bought gifts for you and Nolan. I'm coming home right away."…At 8:00 pm, Justin sent another message."Claire, why can't I get through to you? Where are you and Nolan? Please reply. I'm really worried."By 10:00 pm, Justin's act was gone, replaced by a desperate message. "Claire, I was wrong. Please hear me out. Come back. I can't bear to lose you and Nolan…"He kept flooding my WhatsApp with one 60-second voice message after another.I frowned and tossed my phone back into my bag in di

Just then, his phone rang. Justin hastily wiped away his tears, then looked down at the screen.Suzanne's name flashed on the screen. As soon as he picked up, she started sobbing. "Justin, Marcus says his eyes hurt all of a sudden. Could it be a rejection reaction? Can you take him to the hospital?"In his panic, Justin lurched to his feet and overturned the trash can by the door. Shredded pages filled with Nolan's scribbles were scattered across the floor, stopping him cold.Ever since Nolan learned how to write, he had kept a diary. It started with smiley faces, then simple drawings, and eventually whole pages filled with words. He recorded his days and emotions in it, hoping to share everything with Justin. In the beginning, Justin listened patiently and shared his day with Nolan. Over time, his patience wore thin until he eventually shut himself away in the study. From then on, that door split their home into two separate worlds.Behind the closed door, Justin centered his wor

Before the doctor could finish speaking, Justin ended the call. His hands trembled as he dialed the pinned number."Claire, pick up the phone. Please pick up…"After two rings, a cold electronic voice came through the line."Sorry, the number you have dialed is powered off."Justin opened our chat window and fired off several messages."Claire, where are you right now?""I know this might be hard for you to accept. Can we talk?""I was wrong. Where are you? Should I come pick you and Nolan up and take you home?"An entire minute slipped by, yet the phone remained completely silent. He had a bad feeling. Claire, who normally replied in less than ten seconds, now seemed completely determined to cut him off.Justin recalled the resolute look on my face as I packed my luggage yesterday. He remembered the hatred and despair that flashed in my eyes when he slapped me.The more he thought about it, his frown deepened, and panic spread over his face.Justin couldn't hold back any
