Chapter 4

Autor: Sunset Silk
One month later, the Ginger family held a charity gala.

Millie was unusually quiet. She stopped picking fights with me, and she no longer secretly cried. She even personally pinned the commemorative brooch for winning the design competition on my collar. "Joey, it was my fault."

She smiled sincerely. "I won't fight you for anything anymore."

Cole saw this and quietly reminded me, "The more normal she acts, the more I feel something is off."

I could not agree more.

However, nothing happened until the dinner was halfway through.

My father announced that the foundation had raised $5 million in donations tonight, and the entire venue erupted in thunderous applause.

Ten minutes later, the financial director rushed into the banquet hall with a ghastly pale face. "The money is gone!"

The $5 million had been transferred from the foundation's account, and I was the recipient.

The banquet hall fell silent instantly.

This time, my father did not scold me. Instead, he immediately sealed the exits, pulled the security footage, checked the accounts, and ran fingerprint tests.

They had finally learned to check, but everything they found pointed to me.

The surveillance footage showed someone wearing my dress entering the finance room at 7:40 PM.

The transfer key was tucked into a hidden compartment in my handbag, and only my fingerprint was on it. Even the $5 million sat untouched in my newly opened account.

Greyson grimly examined the video. "It shows no signs of editing."

Cole checked every entrance and exit to the banquet hall. "Joey was indeed not in the hall between 7:35 and 7:50 PM. The person in the surveillance footage matches her height and even the way she walks."

My father had someone verify the dress.

It was a one-of-a-kind piece, personally altered by Norma. No one else had one like it.

I left the banquet hall because Millie told me an elderly staff member had fallen in the storage room and needed my help. When I arrived, no one was there, and the hallway surveillance cameras were under maintenance.

She had calculated even this 15-minute gap with flawless precision.

They did not jump to conclusions or listen to one side of the story like they used to.

On the contrary, they had investigated everything they possibly could, only to become even more convinced that I was the thief.

My mother looked at me, the anticipation in her eyes fading away. "Joey, you could have just told me if you needed money. Why did you have to take the charity funds?"

I did not answer and simply looked at Millie.

This time, instead of rushing to accuse me, she stepped in front of me. "There must be something that hasn't been checked yet. Joey wouldn't do something like this."

Just then, her phone rang suddenly. As she read the message, her face instantly turned deathly pale.

My father snatched the phone away.

The screen showed a chat log between me and a money-laundering agent.

[Money received. I'm leaving tonight.]

A plane ticket for that very night was conveniently found upstairs in my suitcase.

Bank accounts, surveillance footage, fingerprints, chat logs, and a plane ticket…

Every chance I had to overturn past accusations had been taken away.

Greyson gripped the phone tightly. For the first time, his eyes held no anger, only disappointment. "I had just started to trust you."

My father suddenly looked as though he had aged several years. "Return the money, and I might still be able to have a lawyer argue your case."

The gala guests began to whisper.

Some remarked that children raised in orphanages were bound to be short-sighted.

Others suggested that even their own biological daughter would never be loyal to the Ginger family. Perhaps they should have just kept raising Millie instead.

With reddened eyes, Millie spoke up to defend me. However, she smirked ever so slightly when no one could see her.

She slid the fingerprint analysis report toward me, her voice soft and steady. "Joey, everyone has taken the time to investigate this thoroughly. With both eyewitness testimony and physical evidence, surely this is enough to convict you."

The entire hall waited for my confession.

I finished flipping through the stack of so-called irrefutable evidence and sighed. "I can certainly prove my innocence, but the price you'll have to pay this time could be rather steep."

Everything Millie and Cynthia had done was gradually brought to light.Cynthia switched Millie and me at birth, and the pair had falsified evidence, embezzled charity funds, and made malicious false accusations. They had to take responsibility for their choices. The Ginger family held three family meetings in total to discuss how to compensate me.The first time, my father wanted to give me shares. The second time, my mother wanted to convert the largest room next to the master bedroom to be mine. The third time, Greyson brought an apology more than ten pages long.I stopped him when he reached the second page."Just get to the point."His ears turned red. "The point is I'm sorry.""Anything else?""We need to verify facts first before speaking."That just about earned him a passing grade.I did not move back into the Ginger family home. After starting university, I moved into the dormitory and worked part-time at the design studio on weekends.I did not turn down my rig

The next day, the Ginger family held a press conference. My father wore a grim expression in front of the media. "Joey Ginger drove away my adopted daughter. It was a display of poor character. From today on, she's no longer part of the Ginger family."Greyson pushed a termination statement in front of me.I signed it cooperatively and carried my old suitcase away. The whole internet was criticizing me.However, my father's knees did not ache, and Greyson's company was not wrongly accused.Because they knew I was innocent. This was not a conviction. It was just a show.Sure enough, Millie sent me her address less than an hour after the press conference ended. She demanded that I go alone to the mobile study bus that had been taken out of service, hand over the original DNA test report, and give up my position at the foundation. When I entered, she was sitting on the platform without the slightest sign of being driven away. "Joey, wouldn't it be better to admit defeat earlier?

The next morning, Millie was gone.A letter was left in her room.[Joey said I had to disappear so she could become the Ginger family's only daughter.]A voice recorder pen rolled out of the wooden box. It contained my voice. "You should have left long ago. It's either you or me in this family."Greyson's first reaction was not to question me. He pressed the pause button. "This sentence lacks context."My mother nodded with red eyes. "Find her first. Don't jump to conclusions."I looked at them, suddenly unsure how to react. When Millie shed a tear, they could easily sentence me to ten years of punishment. Now that she was truly gone, they still remembered to investigate.Cole quickly restored the complete recording. The original words were Millie asking me, "Will you only stay in this family if I leave?"I replied. "I don't think anything about you leaving. It's not up to me to decide if it's either you or me in this family."She only cut out the first part of the sentence

My father stopped pursuing the source of the secretly filmed video. Instead, he turned his attention to the birth records from 18 years ago. "Things happened one after another. There has to be more to this than Cynthia trying to protect Millie."Now he sounded like someone who knew how to run a powerful family.Three days later, the old archives sealed by the hospital were delivered to the Ginger family.Millie and I were born on the same day.Cynthia was in charge of the night shift in the nursery back then. She swapped our wristbands and, after leaving her job, sent the Ginger family's biological daughter to an orphanage in another town. When my mother saw this, her hands were shaking. "So Joey wasn't lost, but she was deliberately swapped? "No one answered. The new DNA test results were placed on the table.Millie and Cynthia were biologically mother and daughter.Millie turned pale and stepped back. "I didn't know. I really didn't know!"My father did not scold her but o

Secretly filmed footage from the charity gala went viral that same night. The video showed only the moment my account was revealed to have an extra $5 million. The police report receipt at the end was completely cut off.A social media influencer named Aaron Wynn recorded a reaction video, slamming his hand on the table and criticizing me. "I guess growing up in an orphanage makes you greedy! The Ginger family can silence people, but they can't control their own daughter."After he finished watching, Greyson asked the public relations department to suppress the news.I stopped him. "Don't take anything down. The more things you take down, the more it seems like we're guilty."I released the bank statements, the time of the report, and the appraisal of the silver dress all at once.Aaron still refused to stop. "It's easy for the rich to fabricate evidence. Such people should be kicked out of the education system!"As soon as he finished speaking, his account received ten violatio

My father's expression darkened. "Who are you trying to scare?"He froze my account and called his lawyer to report the case to the police. As soon as the order was given, his phone rang.Ginger Group's $50 million charitable reserve fund was urgently frozen over suspected unauthorized transfers.Exactly ten times the $5 million. My father looked up immediately. "I didn't touch that money!"The person on the other end of the line only replied, "The evidence is conclusive. Please cooperate with the investigation, Mr. Ginger."I whispered, "Does that sentence sound familiar?"He held the phone, and his face paled instantly.Outside the banquet hall, staff members rushed in, followed by the bank's risk control personnel. "Ms. Ginger reported the case at 7:41 PM, requesting to freeze the abnormal deposits. The $5 million never left the regulated account."I placed the police report receipt on the table. "I knew the moment the money came in."Greyson frowned. "Then why didn't you
