Chapter 3

Autor: Sunset Silk
After the family reunion dinner, I got an internship at the Ginger family's charity foundation. It was not because of my family, but because of Norma's recommendation.

The foundation was soliciting plans for mobile study rooms in mountainous areas. I worked late for seven nights, sketching out how an old bus could be unfolded into a classroom.

The seats and tables could fold up, the roof could collect rainwater, and there were spaces reserved for storing books in the corners.

I had not pulled these ideas out of thin air.

The orphanage was drafty in winter. As eighteen of us children crowded around one table, I thought about how great it would be if the classroom could come to us rather than the other way around.

Millie turned on the projector before me on the day we were to submit our drafts.

Her proposal was the same as mine when it came to the classroom's structure and color scheme.

She covered her mouth, shocked. "Joey, why did you copy my work?"

My file was created two hours later than hers.

Greyson's expression immediately turned grim.

"Millie has been doing charity work for six years. You've only been at the foundation for a few days. Just because you suffered during your childhood doesn't mean you can use your hardship as an excuse to steal others' things and make yourself look good."

I pushed the computer towards him. "Check the cloud records."

"The evidence is right here. What's there to check?"

Greyson withdrew my entry from the selection himself and ordered my proposal to be deleted. "Apologize to Millie in the internal group chat. The Ginger family finds such stolen honors extremely disgraceful."

The moment I hit delete, his phone began to ring incessantly with dozens of calls.

A new product proposal that Ginger Group had spent six months preparing was being accused of plagiarism by a competitor.

The accuser produced ten highly similar original drafts, all of which predated Ginger Group's own work.

Greyson rushed back to the office and spent three hours hunched over his computer trying to explain himself.

No one was willing to look at his backend system logs.

The board stripped him of his position as project lead and demanded he issue a public apology via a company-wide email.

When he returned home that evening, his tie was crooked, and his eyes were bloodshot. "My team and I built that proposal from the ground up. Why won't they even check?"

I was in the kitchen making pasta. I did not even look up.

"Funny. That's exactly what I was wondering."

Greyson froze in the doorway.

After a long silence, he reopened my laptop and began combing through the cloud activity logs.

At 2:17 AM, he found it: Millie had logged into my account using our home network. She had downloaded the original drafts and disabled automatic synchronization, deliberately ensuring that my files would show a later creation timestamp.

The moment the evidence came to light, Greyson's workplace called.

The person who actually leaked the proposal was caught, and his position was restored.

Millie turned deathly pale, then burst into tears. "I was just trying to help Joey polish her work and sent the wrong file by mistake! I never imagined it would turn out like this."

My mother instinctively tried to speak up for her.

For the first time, Greyson cut her off. "Does sending the wrong file require you to disable the synchronization feature?"

Millie fell completely silent.

In front of everyone at the foundation, Greyson reinstated my eligibility for the competition and sent out a follow-up email to set the record straight. "I wrongly accused you."

Holding the plate of pasta that had long since gone cold, I looked at him flatly.

"My background may not be very respectable, but I earned the money for my own tuition and drafted that proposal myself. You don't have to like me, but don't use my poverty as grounds to convict me."

In the end, my mobile study room project won.

The foundation director asked me what reward I wanted.

I declined the cash prize. Instead, I requested that the procurement accounts for every bus built using my design be made public.

"People who have known poverty aren't necessarily greedier. They just better understand what kind of urgent needs a single dollar can address."

Standing outside the door, Greyson heard me and remained there for a long time, unable to bring himself to enter.

On the day the first vehicle arrived, Millie was nowhere to be seen. Her door stayed shut all day.

When she finally emerged, she had reverted to being the well-behaved, sensible heiress of the Ginger family.

However, I knew she would leave no room for anyone to claim they had failed to investigate.

Everything Millie and Cynthia had done was gradually brought to light.Cynthia switched Millie and me at birth, and the pair had falsified evidence, embezzled charity funds, and made malicious false accusations. They had to take responsibility for their choices. The Ginger family held three family meetings in total to discuss how to compensate me.The first time, my father wanted to give me shares. The second time, my mother wanted to convert the largest room next to the master bedroom to be mine. The third time, Greyson brought an apology more than ten pages long.I stopped him when he reached the second page."Just get to the point."His ears turned red. "The point is I'm sorry.""Anything else?""We need to verify facts first before speaking."That just about earned him a passing grade.I did not move back into the Ginger family home. After starting university, I moved into the dormitory and worked part-time at the design studio on weekends.I did not turn down my rig

The next day, the Ginger family held a press conference. My father wore a grim expression in front of the media. "Joey Ginger drove away my adopted daughter. It was a display of poor character. From today on, she's no longer part of the Ginger family."Greyson pushed a termination statement in front of me.I signed it cooperatively and carried my old suitcase away. The whole internet was criticizing me.However, my father's knees did not ache, and Greyson's company was not wrongly accused.Because they knew I was innocent. This was not a conviction. It was just a show.Sure enough, Millie sent me her address less than an hour after the press conference ended. She demanded that I go alone to the mobile study bus that had been taken out of service, hand over the original DNA test report, and give up my position at the foundation. When I entered, she was sitting on the platform without the slightest sign of being driven away. "Joey, wouldn't it be better to admit defeat earlier?

The next morning, Millie was gone.A letter was left in her room.[Joey said I had to disappear so she could become the Ginger family's only daughter.]A voice recorder pen rolled out of the wooden box. It contained my voice. "You should have left long ago. It's either you or me in this family."Greyson's first reaction was not to question me. He pressed the pause button. "This sentence lacks context."My mother nodded with red eyes. "Find her first. Don't jump to conclusions."I looked at them, suddenly unsure how to react. When Millie shed a tear, they could easily sentence me to ten years of punishment. Now that she was truly gone, they still remembered to investigate.Cole quickly restored the complete recording. The original words were Millie asking me, "Will you only stay in this family if I leave?"I replied. "I don't think anything about you leaving. It's not up to me to decide if it's either you or me in this family."She only cut out the first part of the sentence

My father stopped pursuing the source of the secretly filmed video. Instead, he turned his attention to the birth records from 18 years ago. "Things happened one after another. There has to be more to this than Cynthia trying to protect Millie."Now he sounded like someone who knew how to run a powerful family.Three days later, the old archives sealed by the hospital were delivered to the Ginger family.Millie and I were born on the same day.Cynthia was in charge of the night shift in the nursery back then. She swapped our wristbands and, after leaving her job, sent the Ginger family's biological daughter to an orphanage in another town. When my mother saw this, her hands were shaking. "So Joey wasn't lost, but she was deliberately swapped? "No one answered. The new DNA test results were placed on the table.Millie and Cynthia were biologically mother and daughter.Millie turned pale and stepped back. "I didn't know. I really didn't know!"My father did not scold her but o

Secretly filmed footage from the charity gala went viral that same night. The video showed only the moment my account was revealed to have an extra $5 million. The police report receipt at the end was completely cut off.A social media influencer named Aaron Wynn recorded a reaction video, slamming his hand on the table and criticizing me. "I guess growing up in an orphanage makes you greedy! The Ginger family can silence people, but they can't control their own daughter."After he finished watching, Greyson asked the public relations department to suppress the news.I stopped him. "Don't take anything down. The more things you take down, the more it seems like we're guilty."I released the bank statements, the time of the report, and the appraisal of the silver dress all at once.Aaron still refused to stop. "It's easy for the rich to fabricate evidence. Such people should be kicked out of the education system!"As soon as he finished speaking, his account received ten violatio

My father's expression darkened. "Who are you trying to scare?"He froze my account and called his lawyer to report the case to the police. As soon as the order was given, his phone rang.Ginger Group's $50 million charitable reserve fund was urgently frozen over suspected unauthorized transfers.Exactly ten times the $5 million. My father looked up immediately. "I didn't touch that money!"The person on the other end of the line only replied, "The evidence is conclusive. Please cooperate with the investigation, Mr. Ginger."I whispered, "Does that sentence sound familiar?"He held the phone, and his face paled instantly.Outside the banquet hall, staff members rushed in, followed by the bank's risk control personnel. "Ms. Ginger reported the case at 7:41 PM, requesting to freeze the abnormal deposits. The $5 million never left the regulated account."I placed the police report receipt on the table. "I knew the moment the money came in."Greyson frowned. "Then why didn't you
