Chapter 2

Autor: Lunar Reverie
Late that night, in the hotel suite, August walked in carrying a porcelain bowl.

The pungent smell of ginger immediately filled the room.

"Drink it." He slammed the bowl onto the nightstand.

I was propped up against the headboard, staring at the murky brown sugar water. "You know I'm severely allergic to ginger."

August pulled over a chair and sat down, folding his hands over his knees. "Gemma, stop pretending. Who's allergic to ginger? You're just making excuses to avoid apologizing."

I said nothing. I simply looked at him in silence. My gaze seemed to irritate him.

"You scared Jolie half to death at Crownspire Palace this afternoon. She didn't even eat dinner tonight."

"So?"

"So drink this bowl of ginger tea, take a picture, and post it on social media with an apology to Jolie. Then I'll let this go."

His tone made it sound like he was granting me a favor.

I stared at the steaming bowl. My stomach churned.

Three years ago, August had been hospitalized with gastric bleeding.

Every day, I'd made chicken soup and brought it to the hospital, picking out every last piece of onion.

Now, he was forcing me to drink something containing an allergen that could kill me.

"I'm not drinking it."

August stood up and looked down at me. "Gemma, my patience has limits. If you won't drink it, you can make your own way around the outskirts of Fairmont tomorrow. I'll accompany Jolie instead."

I picked up the bowl.

The smell of ginger shot straight up my nose. I tilted my head back and forced myself to swallow half the bowl, fighting the nausea.

The spicy liquid burned its way down my throat, and a fire seemed to ignite in my stomach.

August watched me finish and nodded with satisfaction. "See? Was that so hard? Don't forget to post the picture."

He turned and walked out without a single word of concern.

Less than half an hour later, the allergic reaction began. Large patches of red welts spread from my neck across my body. My breathing grew labored, and a high fever followed.

I curled up beneath the covers, drenched in cold sweat.

My phone lit up. It was a message from August.

"[Why haven't you posted it yet? Gemma, enough is enough.]"

I was too weak to reply.

Outside the door, I heard August and Jolie talking.

"August, do you think Gemma's sick? Should we go check on her?"

"Leave her alone. She's pretending to be sick to get sympathy. How many times has she pulled this stunt?"

"But..."

"No buts. If she doesn't want anything to do with us, we'll stay in the suite next door."

Their footsteps gradually faded. The door to the adjoining suite closed.

The next morning, we went hiking in the outskirts of Fairmont. The air was damp and cold.

I forced my weak body forward, each step heavy. The high fever from the night before had left me nearly dehydrated.

Jolie wore an expensive designer hiking jacket. She pointed toward an undeveloped trail in the distance. "August, let's take that path. It looks like a real adventure."

I studied the steep, cliffside trail, my brows furrowing. "There's no railing. It's too dangerous. Let's take the easier, marked trail."

August's face immediately darkened. "Gemma, you're ruining the fun again. We're here for an adventure. What's the point of taking the easy trail?"

I tightened my grip on my trekking pole. "I'm not feeling well. I can't manage that trail."

August let out a cold laugh and snatched the pole from my hand. "You're not feeling well? You haven't had enough of pretending to be sick since last night?"

He handed the trekking pole to Jolie. "Jolie didn't bring one. She can use yours. If you're too delicate to keep up, then crawl along behind us."

Jolie accepted the pole, looking somewhat embarrassed. "Gemma, do you mind if I use yours?"

August took her hand. "Why would she mind? She's got plenty of stamina."

He grabbed my arm and dragged me toward the cliffside trail, half pulling and half hauling me along.

The sky gradually darkened, and fat raindrops began pounding against the leaves. The downpour came without warning.

The already-soft earth instantly turned into a muddy, slippery slope.

A deep rumble sounded from the mountaintop, and a torrent of mud and rocks came roaring down the mountainside.

"August, I'm scared!" Jolie screamed and crouched on the ground.

My foot slipped. My already-depleted body completely lost its balance. I tumbled uncontrollably toward the edge of the steep slope.

"August!" I instinctively reached out my hand.

He was standing less than three feet away. All he had to do was reach out, and he could have caught me.

But without a moment's hesitation, he turned and lunged toward Jolie, who had done nothing more than get soaked by the rain. He wrapped his arms tightly around her, shielding her with his body.

I watched helplessly as his back receded from view, then rolled down the muddy slope and over the cliff.

My body slammed hard against the rocks. Pain tore through me, and I became wedged in a narrow crevice between them. Icy rainwater streamed across my face.

I don't know how much time passed before the rescue team finally hauled me up.

Hypothermia left my entire body shaking uncontrollably. They placed me in a makeshift medical tent.

Outside, I heard Jolie complaining, "August, Gemma is such a troublemaker. She insisted on taking that path and nearly dragged us down with her."

August's voice was cold and irritated. "She's nothing but dead weight. I shouldn't have brought her along in the first place."

I lay on a cot, staring at the waterproof fabric stretched across the tent's ceiling.

Three years ago, August's company had gone bankrupt, and his creditors had driven him to the brink of desperation.

I'd donated 800 cc of blood and sold the antiques passed down through my family to pull him back from the edge of death. The ordeal had left me with severe menstrual cramps and chronic sensitivity to the cold.

And now, he was calling me dead weight.

I pulled the IV needle from the back of my hand and pushed aside the tent flap.

When August saw me emerge, he frowned. "What are you doing now? Can't you see Jolie's been traumatized?"

I looked at him, my voice calm. "August, I want a divorce."

August froze. Tears rolled down his cheeks in big, heavy drops. "No. I know I'm a jerk, but I really can't live without you."I took a document from the bag beside me and tossed it in front of him. It was an official case-filing receipt with an anti-counterfeiting watermark."You are a jerk. But the law will teach you how to behave."August lowered his head to read it, and his eyes widened. The document stated in clear, unmistakable terms: "The case against August Cross for embezzlement and the misappropriation of five million dollars in Gemma Lewis's personal funds during their marriage had been formally filed. A notice of detention would be issued shortly.""Gemma... You're sending me to prison?" He stared at me in disbelief."You misappropriated assets I owned before our marriage. Of course we're going to settle that account." I stood up and looked down at him."August, our game is over."I called the tea lounge's security staff and had them drag August out. He was so utterl

With nowhere else to turn, August returned to the Cross family estate. It was the only property the family still owned that hadn't been seized. He knelt before his parents, weeping as he begged them for help."Mom, Dad, please. Find out where Gemma is. If she'll just agree to see me once, the Cross family can still be saved."His father, Samuel Cross, trembled with rage. He snatched a teacup off the table and hurled it at August's head.Tea and blood streamed down his face."You ungrateful brat! You brought this on yourself. You drove Gemma away for the sake of another woman! The Cross family is bankrupt because of you, and you still have the nerve to bring her up?"His mother, Serena Cross, stood to the side, wiping away her tears. "August, the Lewis family has made it clear that anyone who helps you will be treated as an enemy. We don't even dare leave the house anymore."Suddenly, the front door was thrown open with a bang.Jolie stumbled inside, dragging a suitcase behind h

On the third day in Arcadia, August woke in the middle of the night, troubled by jet lag and anxiety. But when he reached for the person beside him, he found the bed empty. He opened the door to the hotel suite and saw Jolie sitting on the living room sofa, excitedly making a video call. Shopping bags from Hermes and Chanel were piled on the table."Don't worry. I've got that idiot completely under control."Jolie laughed into the screen, looking nothing like someone suffering from severe depression."I had someone forge his signature on the accounts receivable from his company. I've already transferred everything into my overseas accounts."Once I resell these bags over the next few days, we'll settle down in Lyravane."August felt as if he'd been struck by lightning. All the blood seemed to drain from his body. He shoved the door open and stared at Jolie, his eyes bloodshot. "What are you talking about?"Jolie screamed in fright, and her phone fell to the floor.August rushed

When I opened my eyes again, my vision kept shifting between blurriness and clarity."Gemma, you're finally awake." My mother, Isabel Lewis's voice reached my ears, thick with tears.I turned my head and saw my parents standing beside the hospital bed. Both of their eyes were bloodshot from lack of sleep."The doctor said the severe burns weren't treated in time, and combined with your serious allergic reaction, they caused life-threatening sepsis."My father, Robert Lewis's voice trembled. "You were in the ICU for three whole days and nights. We almost... we almost lost you."I tried weakly to lift my hand, only to discover that tubes were connected all over my body. "Dad, Mom, I'm sorry I made you worry."My father wiped away his tears, his gaze turning razor-sharp. "Don't worry. I won't let that jerk from the Cross family get away with this."During the three days I'd been unconscious, the outside world had been turned upside down. The damning evidence I'd posted in the grou

In the hospital emergency room, the doctor cut open the clothing on my back and sucked in a sharp breath."Severe scald burns, combined with a serious allergic reaction. You need to be admitted immediately for wound debridement, or you're at extremely high risk of infection."I gritted my teeth, cold sweat covering my forehead. "Doctor, just give me some basic treatment and an injection to numb the pain. I still have something I need to do."The doctor frowned. "Are you trying to die? Burns this severe can lead to sepsis at any moment.""Please."Half an hour later, I dragged my feverish, badly burned body into a taxi and headed to the luxury hotel where Jolie had shared her location. On the way, I called the police. I reported a suspicion that illegal transactions were taking place inside the hotel. The officers arrived quickly and accompanied me to knock on the door of Jolie's suite. The door opened.August stood there in a loosely tied bathrobe, water still dripping from hi

The wind howled through the valley.August froze for a moment before his face turned livid. "Gemma, can you come up with a new trick for once? Every time something happens, you threaten me with divorce. Do you think it's funny?"He was convinced I was just throwing a tantrum. After all, over the past three years, I'd stepped away from my career for him and devoted myself to taking care of our home.In his eyes, I'd become nothing more than a dependent who'd lost the ability to survive on her own.Jolie tugged at August's sleeve at just the right moment. "August, I think I twisted my ankle. It really hurts."His attention immediately shifted to her. He crouched down and anxiously examined her ankle. "How could you be so careless? It's all red."Without hesitation, he scooped her onto his back. Then he turned and shot me a cold glance. "I'm taking Jolie down the mountain to the hospital. Since you're so determined to demand a divorce, prove it. Get down on your own."Carrying Jo
