Dante fired through the observation glass.

Marco vanished before the bullet struck.

White vapour filled the infirmary, burning Alessia’s throat and eyes. Dante covered her mouth with his sleeve and pulled her towards the emergency exit.

The door had locked automatically.

Salvatore seized a metal stool and struck the control panel.

“Stay away from the gas,” Dante ordered Alessia.

“There is nowhere else to stand.”

He placed his jacket over her head.

“You’re suffocating me.”

The cellar walls were covered with names. Hundreds had been carved into the stone, each accompanied by the serpent-and-cross symbol. Dates reached back more than a century. At the centre stood an iron pedestal holding a leather-bound register. Marco waited beside it. Luca knelt near the wall with blood running from his mouth. Two armed men guarded him. “You brought the star,” Marco said. “You led us here,” Alessia replied. “Why?” “Because the register won’t open for me.” A silver lock secured the leather cover. Its surface contained a star-shaped indentation surrounded by words written in Italian. Gabriel translated quietly. “Blood reveals the crown. The crown commands the Order.” Marco pointed his gun towards Luca. “He claimed the register requires the blood of the firstborn heir.” “Then use yours,” Alessia said. “I did.” Blood stained the lock. Nothing had happened. Luca laughed weakly. “Because you aren’t an heir.” Marco struck him. Dante raised his weapon, but t

Salvatore survived the journey to hospital. The bullet had missed his heart but damaged his left lung. Surgeons took him directly into theatre, leaving Isabella outside with blood covering her hands. Alessia watched through the glass doors until they closed. “He saved me,” she whispered. Dante stood beside her. “Yes.” “And Marco shot him because of me.” “Marco shot him because Marco chose to.” “You said the same thing about Matteo.” “Because guilt makes you claim responsibility for everyone’s violence.” Alessia looked down at the blood beneath her fingernails. “Perhaps motherhood is making me emotional.” “You were emotional before.” She raised an eyebrow. Dante touched her cheek. “It was one of the first things I loved about you.” “You called me difficult.” “You are many things.” Evelyn approached with two officers. “The gas was a hospital-grade sedative. Your exposure was limited, but you need another examination.” “I’m going to Belladonna.” “No,” Dante and Evelyn s

Salvatore seized a metal stool and struck the control panel. “Stay away from the gas,” Dante ordered Alessia. “There is nowhere else to stand.” He placed his jacket over her head. “You’re suffocating me.” “The fabric filters it.” “Barely.” Evelyn’s voice came through the corridor speaker. “The vapour is a sedative. Keep moving. Tactical officers are entering from the eastern stairwell.” Luca strained against the handcuff securing him to the bed. “Don’t leave me.” Salvatore looked at him. “You left me beneath a burning house.” “I told you where the register is.” “To save yourself.” “Yes!” The honesty surprised no one. Dante shot the door’s locking mechanism. It opened into the corridor. Two masked

Luca Romano looked diminished inside the prison infirmary. A bandage covered his shoulder where Marco’s men had stabbed him. Bruises marked his throat, and one wrist was secured to the bed. Alessia felt no pity. Dante stood on the other side of the reinforced glass while Evelyn and four federal officers watched from the corridor. Luca smiled when Alessia entered. “My daughter.” “Salvatore’s daughter.” His smile disappeared. “You enjoyed the recording?” she asked. “You humiliated our family.” “You murdered it.” “I protected what generations built.” “By stealing it from your brother?” Luca’s eyes shifted towards the camera mounted in the corner. “Turn it off.” “No.” “Then the register remains hidden.” Alessia sat opposite him. “Marco reached your room despite federal guards. You don’t have enough time for games.” “Release me.” “You’d be dead before reaching the front gate.” “Then place me under Moretti protection.” “You tried to murder Dante at our wedding.” “Your

Alessia stood before the cameras wearing her mother’s diamonds. The recording took place inside the Moretti library. Gabriel stood on her right and Salvatore on her left. Dante remained behind the cameras, surrounded by security monitors and armed guards. He hated the plan. His expression made that clear. Alessia looked directly into the lens. “My name is Alessia Moretti, born Alessia Romano. I am the daughter of Sofia Romano and Salvatore Romano, the lawful former head of the Romano family.” Salvatore visibly reacted to hearing the truth spoken aloud. “For decades, Luca Romano ruled through betrayal. He attempted to murder his brother, killed my mother and imprisoned Gabriel when he discovered the truth.” Alessia paused. “I am not claiming Luca’s criminal empire. It deserves to remain buried. I am claiming the legitimate Romano companies, properties and authority stolen from my father.” Dante’s gaze sharpened at the final word. They had agreed she would acknowledge Salvato

Dante reorganised the estate’s entire security system before Alessia left the hospital. He replaced the clinic staff, ordered background checks on every employee and stationed armed guards outside the examination room. Alessia found him speaking into his phone in the corridor. “No one enters without identification,” he said. “Search every vehicle. Double the night patrol.” She took the phone from his hand and ended the call. Dante stared at her. “I was speaking.” “You were constructing a military fortress around an unborn baby.” “Two unborn babies.” “The doctor said the second pregnancy may not remain viable. It’s too early to know.” His expression changed. Alessia immediately regretted the bluntness. Dante looked through the small window towards the empty ultrasound room. “We heard both heartbeats.” “I know.” “Then there are two.” “Yes.” “And I’ll protect both.” She touched his face. “You can love them without pretending you control what happens.” “I control many th
