LOGINThe courthouse collapsed seconds after Dante carried Alessia outside. He forced her behind an armoured vehicle as stone and glass rained across the street. Dust swallowed the building, turning midnight into suffocating grey. Alessia twisted free. “Gabriel!” She ran towards the wreckage. Dante caught her around the waist and pulled her back. “Let me go!” “The building is still collapsing.” “My brother is inside!” “And running into the fire won’t save him.” She struck his chest with both hands. “You promised we would reach him.” “We will.” “You don’t know that.” Dante held her face between his hands. “No. But I’ll tear those ruins apart stone by stone before I abandon him.” His certainty penetrated her panic. Enzo arrived with the remaining Moretti soldiers. Blood ran from a cut above his eye. “Emergency crews are coming,” he said. “Hale’s men have blocked the eastern streets.” “They don’t want anyone found alive,” Dante replied. Viktor emerged from the smoke with two
The city courthouse had been abandoned after a fire fifteen years earlier. Its stone walls remained blackened, and most of the windows were boarded over. The scales of justice hung crooked above the entrance. Alessia arrived beside Dante. Gabriel had insisted on accompanying them. Caterina remained close to him, carrying enough weapons beneath her coat to start a small war. Enzo waited inside a neighbouring building with Moretti soldiers positioned throughout the surrounding streets. Viktor stood inside the ruined courtroom. He had brought only four men. “You were instructed to exchange Gabriel,” he said. Dante stepped slightly in front of Alessia. “You don’t issue instructions to me.” Viktor looked at Gabriel. “You possess the second encryption key.” “And you possess the ledger,” Gabriel replied. “A copy. The original was taken from the warehouse.” “I released it,” Caterina said. Everyone looked at her. She smiled coldly. “Did you believe I protected Gabri
Matteo laughed when Alessia explained the plan. He sat behind reinforced glass in a secure interview room. His wrists were chained to the steel table, and two guards stood behind him. “You want me to save the Moretti family?” “I’m offering you a chance to save what remains of yourself.” “You’ll never trust me again.” “No.” “Then why give me the only evidence capable of destroying Hale?” “Because Viktor no longer needs you, my father will kill you to protect himself, and Dante intends to keep you inside this room until you die.” Matteo glanced towards the observation window. Dante stood on the other side. Alessia couldn’t see him through the darkened glass, but she felt him watching. “What do I receive?” Matteo asked. “Freedom.” “Dante agreed?” “He will.” “You sound certain.” “He promised not to treat me as property. He said nothing about his prisoners.” Matteo almost smiled. “You’ve changed.” “I know the truth now.” “And you love him.” Alessia i
The doctor placed seventeen stitches in Dante’s shoulder. Alessia remained beside him throughout the procedure, still wearing her bloodstained wedding gown. She rejected every suggestion that she change until the doctor confirmed the bullet had caused no permanent damage. When they were alone inside Dante’s bedroom, she used Gabriel’s knife to cut through the ruined fabric. The ivory dress pooled around her feet. Dante watched from the bed, his arm secured in a sling. “You should rest,” she said. “I am resting.” “You’re staring.” “I was shot at my wedding. I’m entitled to one pleasant experience.” Alessia stepped out of the gown wearing the silk beneath it. Dante looked pained. “Is your shoulder worse?” “My shoulder is irrelevant.” She disappeared into the bathroom and returned wearing one of his black shirts. Its hem reached the middle of her thighs. Dante’s gaze darkened. “You’ve lost blood,” she reminded him. “Not enough.” Alessia crossed the room
Dante didn’t feel the bullet enter his shoulder. He felt Alessia’s body strike the stone beneath him. He covered her as gunfire tore through the wedding canopy. Guests screamed and overturned chairs in their rush towards the house. “Alessia.” Blood covered the front of her ivory gown. Too much blood. Dante’s hands moved desperately across her body, searching for the wound. Her eyes opened. “It isn’t mine.” Relief struck him with enough force to make him dizzy. The blood came from his shoulder. The bullet had passed through muscle, but he barely registered the pain. “You’ve been shot,” Alessia said. “I’m fine.” “You’re bleeding on me.” “I’ll apologise later.” Another round struck the stone near his head. Dante fired towards the gate, dropping one of Hale’s men behind an armoured vehicle. Enzo slid behind the terrace wall beside them. “The eastern route is open.” “Gabriel?” Alessia demanded. “With Caterina inside.” “Isabella?” “Safe room.” Dan
Alessia stood before the mirror while three women adjusted the final layers of her gown. The dress was ivory rather than white. Delicate lace covered her arms, and the fitted bodice gave way to a skirt that moved like water around her feet. A knife rested against her thigh. Two pistols had been sewn into hidden pockets. Isabella fastened an antique diamond necklace around Alessia’s throat. “It belonged to Dante’s grandmother.” “It’s beautiful.” “She shot her first husband.” Alessia met Isabella’s gaze in the mirror. “Why?” “He attempted to poison her.” “Did he survive?” “Briefly.” Alessia touched the diamonds. “A comforting wedding tradition.” Isabella smiled. “You’ll fit into this family perfectly.” Gabriel entered after the other women departed. He wore a black suit, though weakness still affected his movements. Caterina waited outside the suite, watching him with the protective attention of someone who had spent years keeping him alive.
