Chapter 7

Author: Windtalker
Mathias frowned as he swept a glance at the unconscious Cordelia in bed. He replied impatiently. "All right."

The old physician passed a silver blade to Seraphina right away. She took a deep breath before taking the blade and aiming it at her heart. When the sharp blade sliced into her skin, she nearly passed out from the intense pain, but she bit her lip and refused to call out in pain.

Her blood dripped from the silver blade and down her hand. One drop, two drops… Seraphina's sight started to blur. She had no idea how much time had passed before she heard the physician call out in delight, "Lady Cordelia is awake!"

Mathias lunged toward the bed and hugged Cordelia tight in his arms. His voice was incredibly soft as he uttered, "You're finally awake, Cordelia…"

Meanwhile, Seraphina struggled to stand. She used the last of her strength to bite the tip of her finger to write on a white handkerchief with her blood—'Mathias Cavendish, the crown prince, agrees that Seraphina Montclair is free to marry whomever she desires and promises to never harass her or give trouble to her husband.'

Every word written exhausted Seraphina's stamina, and it felt like her broken heart was being paraded to the world in those words as her blood was absorbed into the handkerchief. "My condition is for Your Highness to put your seal on this handkerchief…"

Seraphina handed the handkerchief with the bloody words on it to Mathias with trembling hands. He was too occupied with the awakened Cordelia and printed his seal on it without looking at it. "Happy?"

She clenched the bloody handkerchief weakly and looked at the bright, red seal on it. She suddenly laughed as tears streamed down her face. She was happy. It was finally all over.

Seraphina locked herself in her room for the next few days to recuperate from her wound. Montclair House was bustling as everyone was making preparations for Cordelia to marry into the palace. Seraphina was the only one who sat quietly in front of the window to stare at a pear tree, which had lost all its blossoms, in the garden.

"It's time to dress up, Ms. Montclair." Lottie entered the room with Seraphina's wedding gown as she teared up.

Seraphina snapped out of her reverie. It was her wedding day, and also the day Cordelia would be married into the palace. Montclair House was decorated brilliantly for Cordelia's wedding.

As for a mistress' daughter like her who would be married to the borders, she would be exiting from a side door where no one would notice.

"I heard that His Highness has personally come to pick up Lady Cordelia and has even brought more gifts for her," Lottie said in a whisper while brushing Seraphina's hair. "Every woman in the city is envious of her…"

Seraphina listened quietly without feeling anything in her heart. She knew that she had finally let him go. She was about to change into her wedding gown when loud music and drumming could be heard outside.

"His Highness is here for Lady Cordelia!" A maid ran into the room excitedly. "Ms. Montclair, according to tradition, His Highness will be presenting gifts to the family's sisters. Come outside, quick."

Seraphina had no choice but to leave her room.

When she arrived at the main door, Mathias was riding a big horse toward them in his wedding suit, looking extremely handsome. He was smiling happily as he looked forward to finally marrying the love of his life.

Mathias came forward with gifts for all the sisters. Every one of Seraphina's sisters was given jewelry, but Seraphina was the only one who received the deed to a land. It was the deed for a mansion in West Caventon.

Seraphina's finger trembled as she looked up at Mathias and met the indifference in his eyes. She was suddenly reminded of what he said to her on that day, "Once Cordelia and I are married, I'll find a mansion and move you there."

She smiled bitterly. He had always planned to make her live in the shadows. Unfortunately, she was no longer the same woman who could be easily manipulated because she had loved him.

Seraphina was no longer afraid that Mathias would punish her when he found out the truth, as he had printed the crown prince's seal on her blood contract, which was hidden in her pockets.

The contract had clearly written that Seraphina was free to marry whomever she wanted, and he could not go back on his words as he had personally sealed it.

Mathias noticed something different about Seraphina when he saw her looking blankly at the deed. He frowned, wanting to go up to her, but that was when a huge commotion was heard from inside Montclair House.

Cordelia was dressed magnificently in her wedding gown as a crowd of people ushered her out the door.

He turned away from Seraphina right away as he only had eyes for his bride. Seraphina watched quietly as Mathias and Cordelia left hand in hand, and she returned to her room.

The candlelight flickered as she placed the deed into the fire and watched it slowly burn to ashes.

"It's time to dress you up, Ms. Montclair," Lottie said with teary eyes as she put on the veil for Seraphina.

Seraphina looked breathtakingly beautiful in her wedding gown as the mirror reflected her beauty. She took a last look at the mansion that had kept her locked up for years, and she left for the far borders without looking back.

She was finally free from all ties with the House of Montclair and Mathias. The Seraphina Montclair, who was in love with Mathias, was forever left behind and buried in this winter season, never to return.

"Seraphina… I was wrong. I know it was wrong of me. Please forgive me, Seraphina. You still love me, don't you?" Mathias kept mumbling as he tried to reach out to grab the hallucination in front of him, but Seraphina did not give him the answer he wanted.Even in his hallucination, Seraphina stood at a distance where he could never reach. All she did was look back coldly at him. "No… Don't look at me that way, Seraphina…"Mathias could not help sobbing and wondered what would happen if he agreed to Seraphina's request that day. Would things be different between them if he had agreed to marry her instead of asking her to be in the shadow?Tears streamed down his face as he clenched his teeth. He finally closed his eyes as he died a painful death.Gabriel stared down at him stoically. Mathias was dead, and his army had surrendered. Even his personal guard had surrendered to Gabriel's men, and he had no intention of struggling further. Gabriel had won, and Seraphina would never be s

Mathias was drawing up his plan on the same day. "Father will definitely summon Gabriel Sterling back into the city to protect him. No one will be able to stop me once I kill him," he said calmly with an obsessive look in his eye.His personal guard spoke up hesitantly. "General Sterling is stationed permanently at the borders, and he only needs two weeks to reach the city. His army is made up of 100,000 elite soldiers… It won't be easy for us to win this battle.""We need to win no matter what!" Mathias slammed the table. His guard knelt in fear. "Yes, Your Highness, but there's one thing I don't understand. His Majesty is already prepared to pass the throne to you, and you only need to wait a few more years before His Majesty passes, and you'll become king legitimately. Why would you take such a risk now?"He was right. In the eyes of others, Mathias was not handling matters calmly. He had been heir to the throne from a young age, and there was no need for a hostile takeover as

Numerous thoughts were on Gabriel's mind when he suddenly heard others calling out to him."General! General! General Sterling!" Gabriel snapped out of it and realized he was still at the barracks. "I'm sorry. I had something to deal with before. We should continue."He picked up his spear, and a group of soldiers started chuckling. "It's not often that General Sterling would lose his focus. Are you thinking about Lady Seraphina? We heard that the crown prince went to see her. He's not trying to take her from you, is he?""That isn't possible. He's the crown prince!""But Lady Seraphina is such a good woman. If she isn't, the crown prince wouldn't have approached her. If he were here on official business, he would just need to see General Sterling."Gabriel frowned as they continued making wild guesses. How could they joke about the crown prince? It was disrespectful to the royal family. If someone found out about it and this escalated, they would be executed. He was about to r

What a wonderful promise Mathias gave Seraphina. He promised her that she would be the crown princess and later, the queen. Both were statuses that many could only wish for in their dreams. However, Seraphina felt nothing for Mathias besides sorrow and distance. She took out a handkerchief she kept by her side at all times and clenched it tight. "Your Highness, do you remember granting me a wish when you wanted the blood from my heart, and you put your seal on it?"Mathias nodded. He remembered. Seraphina spread the handkerchief open to reveal words written in blood. "This was what I wanted, and I hope you'll be able to keep your promise, Your Highness."Mathias was taken aback. He had been so anxious about Cordelia's condition that he put his seal down without a second thought. He did not expect that he had granted her something like this.'Mathias Cavendish, the crown prince, agrees that Seraphina Montclair is free to marry whomever she desires, and promises to never harass h

"Where's Gabriel Sterling?" Mathias shouted.Gabriel's expression turned stoic as he walked out on his own. He asked respectfully, "Is there anything you need, Your Highness?""I want to know if Seraphina Montclair has married you. If so, I want both of you to get divorced right now!"Mathias got off his horse to look Gabriel in the eye, but Gabriel had no intention of backing off. "I'm sorry that I'm unable to comply with your request, Your Highness. Seraphina and I have deep feelings for each other. Isn't it immature for Your Highness to try to break us apart with just an order from you?"Gabriel looked grim. He was not submissive, nor did he lower his head. He stared right into Mathias' eyes."I'm the crown prince and your future king. All I'm asking is for you and Seraphina to get divorced. Why must you go against me when you're only a general, General Sterling? Are you trying to go against the word of a member of the royal family?"Mathias was the crown prince, and he had al

How could Seraphina not know who he was? The crown princess was Cordelia, her sister. Before she married Gabriel, she would meet the crown prince in secret every day. The crown prince was a man known for being composed and stoic, yet every time he met her, he would press her body below him and take her over and over again. It happened so many times that she thought he was in love with her.Every time he was done with venting his lust and desires on her, he would treat her coldly and hurt her feelings. He would allow others to misunderstand her and cause her harm. He wanted her to stay in the shadows forever and become his personal plaything in bed.Seraphina was willing to marry herself off to the borders because she wanted to escape him, but Mathias still insisted on coming for her, which was something she never expected. She clenched her fists. Even though she no longer loved Mathias, it still hurt her tremendously to talk about her past with him. It was the worst thing she had
