Chapter 4

Author: Maroon Cypress
Mom blurted out, "I want you to give Elaine the bracelet you got from Andy."

The bracelet was what the Fitzgerald family had given me when Andreas and I got engaged. Everyone knew this was meant for the future Fitzgerald family daughter-in-law.

So, in the end, my bond with Mom as her daughter meant less to her than Elaine's marriage.

I turned to look directly into Andreas' eyes and asked sincerely, "Is this what you want, too?"

The room fell silent. Andreas kept quiet for a long time. I thought I already knew his answer.

Even though I already knew what it would be, my chest tightened with pain, and I struggled to breathe. In the end, I said softly, "If you want the bracelet, I'll give it to you."

Elaine's eyes lit up instantly. Even Mom stared at me, as if she couldn't believe her luck.

Quentin snapped, "Don't tell me you're thinking of asking for shares in the family company. Let me be clear—that's all going to Elaine. Don't even think about taking what's not yours."

"I don't want anything!" I shouted back.

For the first time in my life, I had lost my temper with Quentin, and he shrank back like a frightened quail.

Dad said, "As long as you're willing to give up the bracelet, your mother and I will treat you the same way we treat Elaine, and you can move back home."

For the past seven years, I'd dreamed of being treated like Elaine. But now, I no longer wanted it.

I shook my head. Before I could speak, Mom slapped me hard across the face.

My ears rang, but I still heard her say, "Enough! Isadora, don't think you can threaten us just because you have the Fitzgerald family bracelet. Elaine will always be our child, and you'd better not demand that she leave!"

I wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth. After cleaning it up, I said indifferently, "I want you to sign a legal disownment agreement. From now on, we'll have no—"

Before I could finish, Quentin interrupted, "Isadora, what are you trying to do? Cut ties with the family just to get attention? Do you think this'll make Mom and Dad finally care about you? You're delusional."

Even Elaine chimed in, "Isadora, if you don't want to give me the bracelet, just say so. Why make things so difficult for me?"

Andreas' gaze couldn't hide the storm brewing underneath, his fingers slightly curled as he tapped the table lightly. It was as if he couldn't believe I was really willing to give up the bracelet.

I immediately pulled the disownment agreement from my bag and pushed it toward my parents. "I've already put my signature down. Once you sign this, the document becomes legally binding."

Before coming here, I was still hesitating about having them sign this document. But now, there was nothing left to hesitate about.

After Mom read the contents, her hand holding the pen trembled as she mocked, "You'd better not come crawling back to the Wilde family!"

Quentin glared at me viciously and said, "Isadora, without the Wilde family, I'd like to see how you survive out there. When life hits you, don't come running to us."

I kept my head down and said nothing. Even as their daughter, when life hit me, none of them came to help me. I had long ago stopped fantasizing that the Wilde family would ever treat me well. I'd much rather serve my country anonymously forever and benefit humanity than return to the Wilde family.

After everyone had signed, I took the document and prepared to leave. "I'll mail the bracelet to the house tomorrow."

Since we had severed our relationship, we would absolutely never meet again. As I walked out, Andreas somehow followed me. He grabbed my hand and forcibly pulled me into his arms.

My nose hit his chest, causing a slight pain, and I pushed him away with all my strength. "Andreas, let me go!"

He held me tightly with both arms, trapping me in his embrace so I couldn't move. His voice was somewhat hoarse as he spoke. "Isadora, don't you have anything you want to explain to me?"

I frowned, wondering what I had to explain to him.

Once, when I was stabbed in the chaos, he had instinctively protected Elaine. I had investigated afterward and found that Elaine hired those attackers.

When I presented the evidence to him, he said, "Isadora, I will marry you. Just stop making trouble, okay?"

After Elaine had switched my materials with acid, causing my disability, I explained over the phone and told him the truth. Yet, he still chose not to believe me.

A person's heart wouldn't grow cold in an instant—it would grow cold one incident at a time.

I told him, "I have nothing to explain."

Just then, Elaine ran out of the house. "Andy, Dad wants to go over the wedding plans with you."

He relaxed instinctively. And in that moment, I shoved him away with everything I had.

He grabbed my hand and said, "Isadora, wait for me. It'll only take a few minutes."

I didn't respond. Then, he turned around and went back inside with Elaine. I knew he wouldn't leave the Wilde residence tonight.

There had been many moments like this when Elaine would call him away, leaving me standing alone. The worst time was when I had waited for him in the snow all night. But now, I wouldn't be that foolish anymore.

I flagged down a cab and left without looking back.

When I saw Elaine again, she was no longer the elegant woman she once was. Her skin was wrinkled, her hair tangled and crawling with lice, and her entire body reeked of rotting stench. She hissed, "Isadora, you won—you stole Dad, Mom, and Quentin. And now, you even took Andy. You must be so proud now, aren't you?"Stole them? My parents were mine to begin with, and Andreas was the fiance Grandpa had arranged for me. Unfortunately, I no longer wanted any of them.Elaine lunged at me like a madwoman, but the prison guard held her back behind the bars. She screamed in disbelief, voice cracking, "No! There's no way! You gave Andy up? You actually gave him up? That's impossible!"I had only come today to tell her that what she treasured was what I had discarded. Like me, my husband, Callum Beaumont, was a core rocket program member. And unlike Andreas, he could stand shoulder to shoulder with me at the very top."The Wilde family has disowned you," I told Elaine, then gestured at the

It was not until 20 years later that I encountered Andreas again. But the moment I saw him, everything I used to feel—the butterflies and my pounding heart—was gone.He had invested five billion dollars in my project. Security had been tight, keeping out everyone who might want to assassinate me. However, no one expected Elaine, freshly released from prison, to sneak past them."You bitch, go to hell!" Elaine pulled out a knife and charged toward me, and the close distance made it impossible for me to escape.Just when I thought I would die there, Andreas instinctively pulled me behind him, and the knife struck his heart directly, blood spreading across the floor. "Isadora, I finally did something for you." He gripped my hand and used his last strength to speak."I'm willing to offer the entire Fitzgerald fortune as a wedding gift and fully support your experiments. So, Isadora, will you marry me?"I thought he had truly lost his mind. At a time like this, he was still thinking

After Samuel left, Mom clutched her chest and called out my name for the first time in years. She tried to call me but realized she hadn't even saved my phone number. Her phone contained absolutely no trace of my contact information. Then, she ran to my room to look for clues, only to discover that none of my belongings remained there. She asked, "Where are Isadora's things?""Mom, this room is closest to mine, so I moved my piano here for convenience..." Elaine explained."Where's Isadora's stuff?" Mom demanded, glaring at Elaine.Elaine kept her head down, not even daring to meet Mom's eyes. "I threw them out."A loud smack echoed in the room as Mom slapped Elaine hard, her hands trembling. "Since when did you start calling the shots in this house?"No matter how hard she searched, Mom couldn't find a single trace of me. In the end, the only thing she dug out was a signed disownment agreement between the Wilde family and me.With a tearing sound, she ripped the document into s

Quentin broke down and grabbed Samuel by the collar, shouting, "If Isadora wasn't sleeping with you, how could she possibly get into Professor Landon's lab?" Samuel snapped back, "Enough! Isadora's talent surpasses everyone in that lab—she didn't need to take shortcuts! You should be asking how Elaine stole Isadora's research and published it as her own!" "There's no way Elaine would steal Isadora's work! Don't you dare make such accusations!" When Quentin said this, his voice clearly lacked conviction. If Elaine truly had exceptional talent, why had she only published one paper in four years?Quentin wasn't stupid. He'd suspected Elaine for a while, but he couldn't bring himself to believe that someone he'd grown up with would commit plagiarism. Samuel fired back, "Then look at which professors in the entire industry dare to take Elaine on now!" Quentin's clenched fist loosened as he remembered Elaine being rejected time after time. Even with massive donations, no lab would

After returning home that day, Andreas discovered he could no longer reach me by phone. Even my social media accounts had blocked him completely. Kenny Meyers, his assistant, whom he'd sent to pick me up from the hospital, reported back with troubling news."Mr. Fitzgerald, it seems Ms. Wilde has already been picked up by someone else."When Andreas heard that, his mind immediately went to my senior, Samuel. He had never met the man, yet every day, someone told him that I was having an affair with Samuel."Isadora, call me back." He typed those five words with an air of superiority. Then, he set his phone aside to handle work. He figured I was just throwing a tantrum, and he didn't need to indulge my behavior. But time slowly passed. Three minutes turned into half an hour, and then a whole day. Before long, ten days had gone by, yet there was still no response from me.Andreas finally couldn't contain himself and rushed to the hospital, only to be told, "Ms. Wilde was discharged

"Can you come over? I fell down at home and just need you to help me get to the car..." Andreas immediately said over the phone, "Okay, I'll be right there."I hadn't planned on seeing him again, but after all these years of lab work, I realized I had no friends. Besides Andreas, I didn't know who else to ask for help. "Andy, are you going out? We have an appointment for wedding dress fittings in half an hour, so don't go too far," Elaine reminded him."Isadora, I—" Before he could finish, I hung up the phone.Between Elaine and me, he would never choose me.…"What happened to you? When you were discharged last time, you were much better. It hasn't been long, but now your wounds are badly infected." the doctor said angrily as he examined my arm.I lowered my head in embarrassment and mumbled, "I'm sorry."It wasn't on purpose. I didn't ask to be burned with scalding water or stomped on with heels. Nonetheless, it didn't matter because it would never happen again. After th
