Chapter 3

Author: Two by Two
Yvette signed her name on the paper, then called her lawyer.

"Draw up a divorce agreement." Her voice was frighteningly calm.

The lawyer nodded. "Of course, Mrs. Prescott. Once the papers are ready, there will be a mandatory thirty-day waiting period. After that, provided neither party objects, the civil registry will notify you when your divorce papers are ready to be collected."

"I understand." Yvette's expression didn't change. "Get it done as soon as possible."

After the lawyer left, Yvette was alone in her hospital room again. She closed her eyes, but no tears came. Her heart felt so empty that she couldn't even summon the energy to grieve.

The door opened quietly a moment later.

Thinking her lawyer had returned, Yvette opened her eyes, only to find herself looking at the last person she wanted to see.

Claire Wells.

She hadn't expected Claire to come looking for her.

"What do you want?" Yvette asked hoarsely.

"Mrs. Prescott..." Claire wore the same gentle, timid expression as always, an insulated container in her hand. "I know what Yates did to you. I only wish I'd been there. I would have done everything I could to stop him..."

Yvette regarded her coldly, unwilling to listen to another word of her insincere concern.

Claire continued anyway, her voice thick with tears. "Still, you have to understand what he was going through. When we lost our baby, Yates was absolutely devastated. He held me and cried like a little boy, saying our baby was the proof of our love. He stayed beside my hospital bed for days and nights without eating or drinking anything..."

Every word was another poisoned knife twisting deeper into Yvette's already battered heart.

"If that's all you came to tell me," Yvette interrupted, her voice cold and raspy, "you can leave. You're not welcome here."

Claire flinched as though frightened. Then she quickly raised the container in her hand.

"I... I won't say anything else. Mrs. Prescott, I made you some soup to help you recover. You've just had a miscarriage, and your body is still weak. You need something nourishing to build your strength back up..."

"I don't want it. Take it away." Yvette turned her face aside in disgust.

The timidity vanished from Claire's expression, replaced by a cold, stubborn determination.

"I'm afraid you don't get to decide that."

Before Yvette could react, Claire lunged forward and seized her jaw with startling strength. With her other hand, she lifted the container and began forcing the soup into Yvette's mouth.

"Let go of me! Claire! What are you doing?"

Still weak from her injuries, Yvette struggled helplessly against the woman's grip.

By the time Claire finally released her, Yvette was doubled over the edge of the bed, coughing violently as her stomach churned.

Claire watched her struggle, leisurely wiping her hands. A tearful smile spread across her face.

"Well? Does it taste good?"

Yvette jerked her head up as a terrible sense of dread swept over her.

"That's not soup to help me recover... What is it? What did you put in it?!"

Claire's eyes reddened, and tears spilled down her cheeks almost on command. Yet beneath those tears, her gaze was as cold as a snake's.

She spoke slowly, making sure Yvette heard every word.

"Can't you tell? There's something from the baby you lost in there... the one that never even had a chance to fully develop."

Yvette's mind went completely blank.

For a moment, she could barely comprehend what she'd heard. Then the full horror of it hit her, and a wave of nausea so overwhelming that she could hardly breathe swept through her body.

She bent over the side of the bed and frantically shoved her fingers down her throat, desperate to vomit. She gagged so violently that her entire body convulsed, wishing she could empty every last thing from her stomach.

"Ugh... Ugh!"

Claire stood watching, tears streaming down her face as she savored Yvette's suffering.

"Does it hurt? That's how much pain I was in when I miscarried. No, mine was even worse! If you hadn't forced me to leave, would I have gotten into that accident? Would I have lost my baby? Yates doesn't even love you anymore, so what gives you the right to act like you're better than me just because you're his wife? What right did you have to drive me away?"

She moved closer, her eyes burning with hatred.

"Everyone gets what's coming to them eventually! And that baby of yours? That was your punishment! That's what you get for killing my child!"

"AHHH!"

Yvette couldn't take another second of it.

All the anger, humiliation, and grief she'd been holding back for so long finally erupted. Summoning every last ounce of strength she had, she raised her hand and slapped Claire hard across the face.

At that exact moment, the hospital room door flew open.

Liam had grown even more mature and composed over the past five years, and the way he looked at Yvette was filled with undisguised love and pride. He handed her the bouquet before slipping an arm naturally around her waist and pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead.Under the spotlight, Yvette smiled and leaned against him. The matching platinum wedding bands on their ring fingers caught the light, their happy brilliance almost painful to behold. The audience erupted into another round of enthusiastic applause and congratulatory cheers.Yves looked up at his father and asked softly, "Daddy, that lady's really pretty. Is she famous?"Yates didn't answer. His eyes remained fixed on the beautiful couple onstage, his heart aching as though an invisible hand were squeezing it so tightly he could barely breathe.Almost unconsciously, he touched the empty space on his ring finger. All that remained of his wedding ring was a faint indentation, its outline nearly erased by the passing years. He

Hearing such words from Yates Prescott, a man who'd once been so proud and accustomed to controlling everything, was almost absurd. Yet there was something heartbreaking about his desperation. He'd lowered himself as far as his pride would allow, offering the last thing he could think of to make her stay.Yvette slowly turned back to him. There was no disgust in her eyes, no mockery, not even pity. Only a profound, almost compassionate calm, as though she understood everything now and had long since made peace with it.She shook her head gently, almost as though she were sighing over a man who still refused to see the truth. Then she rose and stepped closer to the bed. With the same natural gentleness she'd shown when moistening his lips, she carefully straightened his rumpled blanket and tucked it around him. Yet even in that small act of kindness, the distance between them was unmistakable."Yates," she said softly, looking at him one last time. Her words carried the finality of a ve

The smell of antiseptic hung in the air of the private intensive care room, accompanied by the steady beeping of medical monitors. After spending several days drifting through endless darkness and agonizing pain, Yates finally felt a faint glimmer of light breaking through his consciousness. His eyelids were impossibly heavy, but he managed to open them a fraction. As his blurred vision gradually came into focus, he made out the pale sunlight filtering through the window. Then he noticed the woman sitting quietly beside his bed.Yvette.She wore a simple cream-colored turtleneck sweater and sat with her face turned toward the window, her expression calm and unreadable. The sunlight outlined her delicate profile, bathing her in a faint golden glow. For one fleeting moment, Yates almost believed he'd traveled back in time to those peaceful, warm afternoons before everything had gone wrong, before the ugliness and betrayal had torn their lives apart. His heart lurched painfully, a rush of

The ugly scene had laid bare just how far Yates's dignity had fallen and how firmly Yvette had resolved to leave him behind.Far from ruining the proposal, his interruption had only strengthened her conviction, making it clearer than ever who truly deserved to share her future.Yvette turned to Liam, who had risen to his feet and was watching her with concern and a silent question in his eyes.Taking a deep breath, she smiled, a sense of relief settling over her alongside a newfound certainty. She reached for his hand and held it gently."Liam Sinclair, yes. I'll marry you. I want to... try building a new future with you."The restaurant erupted in applause and delighted cheers.Overcome with joy, Liam swept her into his arms and held her tightly, as though he'd been reunited with something precious he'd once feared losing.Outside, Yates sat slumped on the cold corridor floor. The sound of cheering drifted through the doors, and he felt as though his soul had been hollowed out, leavin

At that moment, Yates felt as though his heart were being ripped apart. He stood frozen in the shadows, unable to move, forced to watch everything he'd once had blossom in another man's arms.Overwhelmed by jealousy and anguish, he finally lost control. He rushed out of the shadows and dropped to his knees outside Yvette's apartment building, begging for forgiveness. He stayed there the entire night, heedless of the cold dew soaking through his clothes, until security finally escorted him away at dawn.Yet his desperate attempt to win her sympathy accomplished nothing beyond making him the laughingstock of the building's security guards and the neighbors who'd been up early enough to witness the spectacle.Yvette wasn't moved in the slightest. She hadn't even bothered to look down from her window.Despite how irritating Yates's relentless harassment had become, it did little to affect Yvette's growing relationship with Liam.Liam respected her, understood her, and gave her the freedom

Yvette shook out her wrist, her gaze sharp as a blade. Her voice carried an unmistakable authority and contempt that brooked no argument."That slap was payback for everything you did to me at the hospital! Claire Wells, spare me your pathetic tantrums! Yates doesn't want you because you're not good enough for him. What's that got to do with me? "If you ever harass me again, I'll make sure you and your trashy relatives can never make a living in Jadewick again!"The force of Yvette's words left Claire stunned into silence.Just then, tires screeched nearby as Yates's car pulled to a sudden stop. He'd clearly rushed over after hearing what was happening. The moment Claire spotted him, she looked as though she'd found her savior. Her expression immediately crumpled into one of tearful helplessness, and she ran toward him, clutching her cheek and trying to throw herself into his arms."Yates! Thank God you're here!
