"Half an hour later."

She descended the antique wooden staircase, wearing white trousers paired with a loose, short-sleeved grey top that reached mid-abdomen. Her golden hair was styled simply, pinned up to keep its length from getting in her way. She reached the center of the spacious ground-floor living area, where Mrs.

Hanan—her half-sisters' grandmother—resided in this four-story house. On the second floor lay Murad’s private apartment;

he often sat and worked there alone, preferring the quiet to the noise made by his younger half-sisters, who spent most of their time downstairs with their grandmother.

The third floor housed the apartment of Nader and his family—comprising another brother and a younger sister in high school—while the fourth floor was the apartment of her stepfather, where she herself lived.

The hall was empty, save for the servants who were bustling about their work with energy and diligence. She walked quietly, idly fiddling with her long fingernails, which were meticulously painted a vibrant red. On her way, she ran into Laila, who stopped her and asked with a cheerful, playful smile:

"Radwa, how are you? Up early today, then?"

In all likelihood, the entire household knew she was lazy—no, wait; not just the household, but the street and the whole neighborhood knew it too. She returned the genuine smile; Laila was the person she was closest to in this house.

Laila possessed a lively, playful personality much like her own and was incredibly kind-hearted—the exact opposite of her brother.

Sometimes, she wondered how Laila—the epitome of a well-mannered, virtuous young woman—could possibly be the sister of that rude, obnoxious Nader.

"Seriously, guys? Is my reputation really that bad? How embarrassing is this?"

She finished her sentence while fiddling with strands of her hair and lowering her head in a mock display of embarrassment. Laila laughed, lifting the other girl's chin with her hands and saying teasingly: "Oh, look at you, acting all shy.

So, are we going to get used to this every day, or is this just a one-time thing?

" She tucked her hands into the pockets of her casual summer joggers and shrugged playfully

: "Wish me luck."

"Oh, I almost forgot—I finished the novel I borrowed from you two days ago. It was amazing; I want another one!" T

he other girl narrowed her eyes in astonishment

: "Seriously? That fast? That’s a long novel—*Anta Li* is the longest one I’ve ever read; it took *me* a whole month to finish it!"

"Honestly, I loved it; I was absolutely hooked on it. Do you have anything else?"

She bowed her head in thought, considering a novel that would suit the other girl's taste from her library—which was packed with all kinds of books and novels.

Suddenly, she remembered something; her eyes widened, and she shot the other girl a scorching, reprimanding look

: "You’re in big trouble! Your exams are just days away—have you forgotten?"

"Oh, Riri, come on! I’ve been buried in those books since the start of the year; I’ve memorized them inside out. Can’t I just unwind a little from the stress and misery of studying?"

She shook her head in a firm refusal, speaking in a sharp, non-negotiable tone

: "No means no. Once your exams are over, you can practically live in my library if you want—but right now? Absolutely not, Laila. Do you want to fail and have Aunt Madiha string me up?"

Laila raised her hands to silence her, saying with a hint of exasperation

: "Alright, alright—just hush. If Deeha hears you right now, she’ll string both of us up."

There was only a year’s difference between them, yet Radwa always played the role of the older sister.

Despite the negligible age gap, she viewed Laila as her own daughter and treated her accordingly—constantly urging her to study and offering guidance.

Surprisingly, Laila adored her; she would yield to whatever Radwa said, heed her advice, and act upon it, embodying the proverb

: "He who is older than you by a day knows more than you by a year."

"God forbid, Madam. But what were you doing like that? Were you eavesdropping on Mr. Murad?" She covered her mouth with her hands, nearly dropping the coffee tray, and whispered so quietly that she was barely audible: "Eavesdropping? Me? No, I was just... I saw a cockroach walking across the office door." "A cockroach? What cockroach? We just sprayed the place about a week ago! Where did that cockroach come from? I have to tell Mr. Omran. It looks like the company that sprayed the house cheated us. They took a fortune from us." She sighed in annoyance at the talkative woman, wishing she could hit her for all that pointless chatter. "Enough, Umm Mohammed! You're going to expose me. Never mind what I'm doing. Why were you coming here? Who are these coffees for?" "They're for Mrs. Nancy and Mr. Murad." A wicked idea suddenly formed in her mind. Someone, please restrain her criminal imagination. She smiled mischievously and took the tray from the maid. "Give them to me. I'm goi

. She tried to pull his hands away when the pain became unbearable, but he kept his eyes fixed on her. His eyes had turned into a dark, almost black void that seemed capable of swallowing her whole. "So there is someone? And I wonder who that unfortunate man is—the one fate has placed within my reach..." Finally, she managed to yank her arm free with force and anger, shouting at him: "Nader, can you stop interfering in my life already? Now get out before someone sees us like this!" She gestured toward herself as she said the last sentence, clearly referring to the fact that she was wearing almost nothing. He gave her a burning look before turning around and leaving the room, slamming the door behind him in frustration. She exhaled loudly, as though she had just emerged from a battle. She collapsed onto the bed once again, then eventually got up, put her jacket back on, and left the room. Maghrib was indeed being called. She had slept far longer than she realized. For a mom

. "Nader" stumbled backward from her abrupt movement, his hands still suspended in the air after he had been playing with her hair. She stared at him in horror before hurriedly pulling the blanket over herself, her nerves finally snapping as she shouted: "Have you lost your mind, Nader? How could you just walk in on me like that? What's wrong with that brain of yours?" "What happened? Why are you freaking out like that? You look as if you've seen a ghost." "You're impossible. I swear to God, you're impossible." For the second time that same day, she threw the exact same words at him. And for the second time that same day, he smiled at her with that unbearably smug smile, as though her words were declarations of love rather than insults. She continued breathing heavily, cursing him with the worst insults in her head. One day, he was going to make her die of a heart attack. She could not understand what could possibly be going through the mind of this idiot. She placed her he

Then she turned toward "Nancy", dragging her into the conversation whether she wanted to be involved or not. "Radwa is actually a really good writer. She's talented at writing thoughts and poetry." "Nancy" raised her eyebrows with genuine interest this time and asked sincerely: "Really? Can I see what you're writing, Radwa?" "Radwa" hesitated for a moment, lowering her eyes to the notebook she held as though it were a shield protecting her from the world. How could she hand over a piece of her heart, represented by her words, to someone she felt such hatred toward? But she soon gave in. She quietly extended the notebook toward "Nancy", her movements hesitant, as though she wished she could take it back. "Nancy" took the notebook gently, as if she were handling a precious treasure. She looked at it for a moment before opening it and flipping through the pages, her eyes moving over the carefully written lines. A genuine smile appeared on her lips. "You're really the one who w

Why not? She was his cousin. They had grown up together since childhood, and beyond all that, they genuinely shared a great deal of intellectual compatibility. She was calm, composed, and sensible to an almost absurd degree. She worshipped her work as if it were her entire life. She was intelligent, well-educated, and, to make matters even worse, close to him in age. She was twenty-eight, while he was thirty-one. Only three years separated them in age, whereas she was a full ten years younger than the other one... To him, she was... a child. Damn it. She was going to cry. And after all that, she was actually beautiful. She had a slender, feminine figure that she took great care of, a tall frame, coal-black hair, and large black eyes framed by thick lashes. Her lightly tanned skin only added to her allure. She truly radiated temptation. But she saw herself as the complete opposite of that. She saw herself as nothing more than a clumsy frog, utterly useless in life... taking up spa

"Nancy" had been living in Alexandria and working alongside "Murad" at their import-export company for nearly two years. She had always excelled academically, and after graduating, she trained at the company. Before long, she proved her competence and was hired permanently. Ever since then, "Murad" had barely been able to do without her. She worked alongside him every step of the way, especially considering how exceptionally talented she was at her job—as he was always so fond of saying. From the way he spoke about her, "Radwa" could sometimes sense how proud he was of her and of everything she had accomplished. She could only hope that was the sole reason. Because if there were another reason... Well, she would certainly be making headlines. "Woman Sentenced to Prison After Killing Another Woman with a Nail File." And here, you may decide for yourselves exactly who that unfortunate woman would be. "Murad" resumed speaking, making sure she understood: "I'll send th
