Lana’s POV

The rest of the table had dipped into low conversation. Business terms passed between lips like bread and butter. “Acquisition,” “compliance,” “territory expansion.” Words that sounded like nothing and everything. A war in black suits.

Max hadn’t touched his dessert, but his hand rested on the stem of his glass, and I could see the slight flex of his fingers. He was listening, not just to the conversation, but to the weight behind every word. The gaps and hesitations.

So was I.

“Are you feeling bored?” he murmured under his breath.

“Not so much.”

He leaned closer, just enough that his arm brushed mine. “Tell me once you feel bored, I have many ways to entertain you.”

I arched my brow. “You’re such a naughty man.”

His mouth twitched. “Just towards you.”

Across the table, Runa’s laughter abruptly stopped.

She was looking straight at me now, the smile on her lips all teeth. Her eyes flicked to Max, then back again. I pretended not to notice the staring and took another bite of

Lana’s POVHis jaw clenched. He looked like he was battling something, very heavy. "This isn't your burden.""Isn't it? My love, It's my name they're dragging through the mud."He turned away, and that hurt more than any insult ever could."You're intentionally keeping me in the dark." I whispered. He didn’t deny it.I ignored him and decided to take a long bath to cool off.I stripped off my dress, stepped into the shower, and let the water fall on me until my skin turned pink. It did nothing to wash the ache away. When I stepped out wrapped in a towel, the bedroom was empty.I tried to sleep but I couldn’t.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the smirks of those girls. Heard the words again. She sold herself to him to save her mother. Pathetic.I didn’t even know their names. But they had sliced through something fragile in me.By the time I heard the room door open, hours had passed. The clock read 3:11 AM.I sat up in bed, heart pounding. My throat was dry.He came into the room. H

Lana’s POVThere was another giggle, this one was even more louder than the previous one. "Please. She’s just a cheap Omega. Everyone knows she sold herself to him to pay off her mom’s hospital bills."My feet stilled, heart seizing in my chest. I didn’t turn. I couldn’t breathe for a moment."Makes sense, right? That kind of trash can never get a real ring. Just a leash on her neck."Sophie turned so fast her heels screeched against the floor. "Excuse me?"The two werewolves, both young, perfectly styled, with their designer handbags dangling from their freshly painted fingers shook in synchronized shock. One of them, a redhead with high cheekbones, narrowed her eyes. "Can we help you?""You think spreading lies makes you relevant?" Sophie snapped, stepping forward. Her entire posture shifted, tension coiling in her limbs like a spring pulled too tight. "You don’t know a damn thing about Lana."The other Omega, blonde, scoffed. "Everyone's talking about it. It’s not a secret anymore.

  • A wife for the cursed alpha    53. The Veil

Lana’s POVI grabbed my bag and keys off the counter and slipped on my flats. The elevator ride down felt like a descent out of the fog that clung to that penthouse—the fog of secrets and half-answers. I really needed to breathe somewhere else for a while. The city air hit differently the moment I stepped outside. Car horns hummed beneath the static of the morning rush, people moved with purpose on the sidewalks, and above it all, the clouds stretched thin and indifferent across the blue.I hailed a car. The driver barely glanced at me before nodding. “Where to?”“I gave him Sophie’s address. The ride passed in a blur. I didn’t say much, just watched the buildings go by while I tried to shake off some upsetting thoughts. My thoughts ran louder than the traffic. I kept replaying Max’s face, the way he’d avoided my questions with a crooked smile and a soft “not now.”My chest ached with something too raw to name. I wasn’t sure if I was angry or just simply frustrated.By the time we pul

  • A wife for the cursed alpha    52. Cruel memory

MAX’S POVThe elevator doors slid open with a soft chime. My shoulders were tight. Muscles tensed up with rage, and mental exhaustion. But the only thing I could think of was getting to her and giving her a tight hug.My wife. My Lana.I pressed my palm to the scanner, jaw clenched as the lock disengaged with a hiss. The door opened soundlessly. Inside, the lights were low. The lamplight spilled across the floor like sunflies. Music played faintly, it was a soft piano sound drifting from the bedroom speakers. I stepped in bracing myself for any of the questions she might have for me.The scent of her skin hit me first. It smelled faintly sweet, like peach tea and vanilla. She was curled up on the bed in one of my shirts, her legs tucked beneath her, a blanket draped over her lap. A book lay open but forgotten on her thigh. When she saw me, she sat up quickly. “You’re back.”I nodded, trying to relax the rigid set of my spine. I couldn’t do that well though. The conversation from the

Max’s POV“There wasn’t a fixed time.” I said evenly, stepping toward the center of the circle.A low chuckle came from Councilman Dorel, seated directly across from me, one leg crossed over the other, eyes glinting like coins under the moon. “Anyways, can we begin?”I took my place before them, shoulders squared, spine unyielding. I could feel it already, the slow tightening of the room and the breathless hush.Councilman Farrow adjusted his spectacles, then gave a quiet nod to an aide standing. Without a word, she stepped forward and placed a thick folder on the circular table. It contained some papers and photo prints. The folder passed from hand to hand, each council member lingering longer than the next until it finally landed in front of me.There was a long pause. Then Brielle said, voice smooth as glass, “We’ve reason to believe your recent union with Lana is not the sacred mating bond you presented it to be… but a contractual maneuver.”My pulse didn’t waver. But something in
