The Reckoning

Morning crept slow and gray over the Billion Estate.

The rain had passed, but its smell lingered in the air tension and wet earth.

Madam Jamaica Billion stood at the head of the sweeping staircase, hands folded in front of her like a general waiting for combat. The paintings of her forebears glared down, silent witnesses to another family tempest.

There followed below a procession of black automobiles up the driveway. Stepping from the middle one was Marie Drams icy, impeccable, every feature of her cream-colored suit honed to refinement. Only the subtle shadow under her eyes gave away the sleepless night she had suffered.

"Madam," she said quietly as she approached the marble foyer, inclining her head slightly. "You wished to see me."

Jamaica's eyes were as unyielding as steel. "I did not wish, Marie. I called."

Marie’s lips curved. “Of course.”

“Come,” the matriarch said, turning toward the study. “We’ll speak privately.”
