Hours went by before Charles made the approach to his long driveway to the house. The burden of his decision still nagged him. The large house sat before him, its weathered stone facade and gleaming windows revealing nothing. He had returned home, but home was gone.

As the vehicle moved away, Charles removed his hand from the wheel for a second. His phone beeped once more, which broke the quietness. He checked the screen, hoping it would be his assistant or business partner, but it was Fiona.

"We need to talk."

His heart missed a beat. Plain words, but with the tone between them like a gun in a revolver. He was rooted in place gazing at the note with no idea what to do. What can one say? Contract cancellation? Something else?

There was a voice in the back of his mind that he was not yet ready to listen to telling him to do it for real. But could he?

With a deep breath, he typed back, “I’ll be there in an hour.” He hit send, then immediately regretted it, wishing he had said something

The Manila sunlight streamed through stained glass. The interior air was heavy with bergamot and strained silence. The private tea room of the Billion estate was decadent, sure but it had more the atmosphere of a courtroom these days.Madam Jamaica Billion, in navy silk and pearls, sat at the head of the table like a general preparing for war. Her cane rested beside her chair, unneeded. Her eyes were flint.Fiona sat to one side, pale but composed, her fingers tight around a porcelain teacup.Charles stood near the window, spine straight, the Manila police report folder tucked under his arm.“You look like you’ve seen a ghost, child,” she said without blinking.Charles stood behind Fiona, arms crossed, tension etched into his neck like marble. He hadn’t spoken since they arrived.Fiona drew a breath. We think someone's after us. Me, personally," she started. "They created a medical history. Said I gave birth to Liza… said I was in a coma fifteen years ago. Hospital records, witness st

Dawn. The Manila skyline had not yet drawn back its veil of morning light and smog, but the car was already in motion—black, bulletproof, as silent as guilt on wheels.Fiona was in the back seat next to Charles, the third envelope—ORIGIN—still unopened on her lap. Her fingers followed the edge as if it would sear her if opened too quickly. They did not say a word.Outside, the city flickered to life in pieces—vendors peddling from carts, jeepneys blaring through puddles of yesterday's rain, a child barefoot chasing a dog down the street. But in the car, it was quiet. Tense.Until Charles at last spoke, "I ran from Vienna. Left people behind. Deals that saved my company but cost others their lives. I told myself I was protecting my family. But now I think—" he turned to her,"—whatever I ran from… it followed me. And it found you."Fiona swallowed. "And Liza."Charles's jaw clenched. "That child is more than a niece to you. You know that now, don't you?"I don't know anything anymore,"

His arms circled her involuntarily, strong and unyielding, as though he had been waiting for this moment—this breakdown—for an eternity longer than he could admit. Fiona shuddered in his chest, breathing in short gasping rasps as she gazed at the photograph now on the floor. The baby."The heir nobody wanted.""What does that mean?" she breathed. "What baby? Whose baby?"Charles hunched beside her, one hand lightly pushing into her back. "I don't know," he told her, but his voice was weighed down. "But someone does. And they want us to remember it."Fiona's fingers edged towards the photograph. The corners were frayed, as if it had been handled too often by too many hands. The face of the baby was turned to one side, eyes closed in slumber, mouth slightly ajar. No name of the hospital. No date stamp. Just a blanket. A background that was hospital sterile. And that message, scribbled like an imprecation.Fiona blinked. And was gone somewhere else.A corridor. Faintly lit.Crying.A doo

The following morningINT. BILLION ENTERPRISES – LOBBY – MORNINGFiona Degenerys gripped the two envelopes firmly against her chest, setting her jaw as she reached the front desk of Billion Enterprises. The gleaming marble floors resonated beneath her heels, but her grip on sanity seemed to be unraveling.Behind the receptionist's desk, a young woman looked up with a trained corporate smile."Good morning, welcome to Billion Enterprises. Do you have an appointment?"Fiona took a deep breath. "No. But I must speak with Mr. Charles Billion. Let him know it's Miss Degenerys. He'll know what it's about."She paused as she examined her—frayed eyes, clenched hands, desperation tightly wrapped just under her well-maintained demeanor."Just a minute, ma'am." The receptionist snatched up the phone and dialed hastily. "Yes, Mr. Billion's office? A Miss Fiona Degenerys is here—she insists it's urgent."There was a pause, then a noticeable change in the receptionist's expression. She looked up, t

After breakfast, Liza sprinted off to play in the room adjacent. Fiona cleaned up in silence, mind whirling. She pulled up her email, scrolling through news articles about the Billion engagement, each with louder headlines than the previous one."Charles Billion to Marry Mystery Woman""Who Is Fiona Generys?""The Billion Dynasty's Most Surprising Match"She clicked one.Her face stared back at her. Cut from their engagement party. Smiling. Insincere. Constructed. But the actual Fiona? The one who slept in subway tunnels, who'd taken on an assumed name, who constructed a new personality to escape from what she'd been? She wasn't in that photo. She was buried beneath it.Deep.Her inbox renewed unexpectedly.A new message.FROM: M.SUBJECT: You Can't Bury BloodHer stomach coiled. She clicked. There was no message—only an attachment.A scanned photograph of an older social worker file. The line dropped dead, but Marie held the phone against her ear long after the call had finished, her gaze unfocused, her heartbeat leveling into something cold and hard. Charles was bewildered, conflicted—and bewilderment was fertile ground. She didn't have to hurry. No, what she had to do now was be patient. Be precise. Fiona Generys may have gotten his attention for the time being, but she had no notion of what she was competing with.Marie rose from the soft velvet armchair, strayed to the darkened room, and opened the curtains. The skyline of London sparkled before her, taunting her self-control. The allure of power. The temptation of heritage. It had been hers once. Should have remained hers forever. And if Fiona believed this was some kind of fairy tale where goodness and love would conquer—She didn't have a clue what type of tale she'd just entered.A gentle voice broke the quiet."Mom?"Marie turned to see Candy in the hall, arms around a fuzzy bunny, sleepy eyes and bewilde
