When I didn't return the hug, Dante's arms eventually dropped to his sides, releasing me.

"Everything okay?" he asked, a flicker of hurt crossing his face. "You didn't even hug me back,"

I managed a smile, though it felt like it was painted on.

A sense of discomfort seeped into my chest, unwelcome and uninvited. The words he'd spoken the night before, when he said that he's my Alpha and only his orders should I obey, still lingered in my mind.

"I'm just too surprised,"

"Really?"

I gave a nod.

Was I really okay?

He stood before me, the same familiar figure I'd known and trusted as my only brother for so long.

Yet something tells me that there's something different.

"I just thought that—oh well, never mind. I guess that jerk got to you again, and you've forgotten about me,"
