Chapter 65

SEBASTIAN

The pack bloomed with brighter colors as the Harvest Moon festival arrived. Since the break of dawn, neighboring packs had been trickling in steadily—some arriving in small groups, others in larger contingents.

Each group brought gifts to offer to the moon goddess in thanks for the harvest.

It had been an absolutely hectic morning for Pete and me. We had been summoned to assist with welcoming the guests, helping them find comfortable places to stay in the hall, and carrying the various products and offerings they had brought with them.

The work was exhausting but also exciting. I had never seen so many wolves from different territories gathered in one place before.

The diversity of the packs was striking—different traditions, different ways of dressing, different accents and dialects.

Many of the Alphas and their pack members had been incredibly generous to us as we helped them.

They pressed coins into our hands, small pieces of jewelry, tokens of appreciation

Chapter 068SEBASTIAN I could not yell out in pain—not when there were still people milling about in the hallways and nearby rooms who might hear. So I bit down on my lip hard and whimpered instead, trying to keep the sound as quiet as possible even as agony shot through my twisted wrist.Darius cursed under his breath, his face going pale as he realized what he had done. He immediately released my wrist and climbed onto the table, gathering me into his arms with surprising gentleness."Are you alright?" Darius demanded, his hands cupping my face and forcing me to meet his eyes. "Sebastian, talk to me. Are you hurt badly?"I nodded, still whimpering softly. The pain was intense, radiating up my entire arm.Darius pulled me into a tight embrace, his strong arms wrapping around me protectively. "I am so sorry. I did not know it was you. I thought—" His voice broke slightly. "I am so sorry for hurting you."I hugged him back despite the pain, burying my face against his shoulder. The

Chapter 067DARIUS I raised my hands, gesturing for everyone to calm down. The room had erupted into agitated discussion after Alpha Gregor's suggestion that someone was leading the nightwalkers, and I needed to regain control of the meeting."Please, everyone settle down," I called out. "I have someone who might be able to provide us with more concrete information."I turned to Torren, who was standing near the door. "Go fetch Todd. He should have completed his research by now."Torren nodded and left immediately.Alpha Helena leaned forward, her brow furrowed. "What research are you talking about, Darius?""What experiment?" Alpha Marcus added, his tone curious but wary."Just wait," I assured them. "You will see soon enough."A few minutes later, Torren returned with Todd. The healer looked absolutely terrible—pale, exhausted, with dark circles under his eyes that suggested he had not slept properly in days. His clothes were rumpled, and there were stains on his hands that I reco

Chapter 066DARIUS As soon as we settled into the throne room and took our places around the large table Torren and some of the guards had worked tirelessly to prepare, I took a moment to look at each of the assembled Alphas. These were leaders from neighboring territories, wolves who had traveled considerable distances to be here. Their presence represented both hope and desperation.I stood, commanding the attention of the room."I want to thank each of you for heeding my call," I began, my voice carrying across the space. "I know many of you could have celebrated the Harvest Moon festival in your own territories, with your own packs. The fact that you chose to come here, to this gathering, speaks to the seriousness of the situation we all face."Several Alphas nodded in acknowledgement, their expressions grave."I will not waste your time with pleasantries or unnecessary formalities," I continued. "We are here to discuss the nightwalker threat and to coordinate our response. Beca

Chapter 064SEBASTIAN The guard Darius sent to accompany me at the doorpost turned out to be none other than Pete.I heard him before I saw him—whistling some cheerful tune as he walked down the hallway toward my position. When he rounded the corner and spotted me, he burst out laughing."What is so funny?" I demanded, though I could not help but smile at his infectious joy."You!" Pete exclaimed, still chuckling. "You should see your face right now. You look absolutely shocked.""What are you doing here?" I asked, genuinely confused. Pete worked in the guard duties."I am to be your guard and helper on the doorpost," Pete announced proudly, puffing out his chest like he had just been given some great honor.I stared at him in disbelief. "You are joking.""I am not," Pete insisted, his grin widening. "Darius himself posted me here. He said we are to work together guarding his chambers.""Did he really?" I asked, still not quite believing it."Yes," Pete confirmed. "Though he did warn

Chapter 63SEBASTIAN It was unusual for Darius to send for me to his office. Usually, if he needed something, he would simply call me while I was at my post or summon me to his chambers. And I wasn't expecting him to after the last incident. When I arrived at his office, he gestured toward the door. "Lock it."My heart began to race. "Was I in trouble? Was he going to punish me for something?"I locked the door as instructed and turned back to find him watching me with an unreadable expression."Have a seat," Darius ordered, pointing to the chair in front of his desk.I sat down, my hands fidgeting in my lap. I could not help but wonder what this was about. "Had I done something wrong? Was he angry about my accusations regarding Adrian? Was this about me bursting into his office the other day?"Darius stood up from behind his desk and walked over to the windows, pulling the curtains down so that the room was cast into shadow. Then he came to sit directly in front of me, perching on
