I’d heard that the pain of severing a mate bond was unbearable – but the pain of heartbreak was even worse.

I slid further down the bed as unshed tears stung my eyes. My heart felt like it was shattering into a million pieces.

I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out.

Of course, I was a fool. How dared I believe that a mere omega like me could have an Alpha as a mate? I wished I could disappear and reappear in my own bed, so I could cry myself to sleep.

Just then, I heard drunken voices and laughter from outside the door.

Someone kicked open the door and staggered in, followed by a small crowd.

I noticed Damon, two other Alphas’ sons, and five beta girls.

“My, my!” A blonde with a figure I’d only seen on TV before said, pushing further in. “So, the chit believed she was your mate, did she? How stupid of her.”

“But the bet’s not complete, Zac, not unless you marked her,” one of the Alphas’ sons said.

It was Damon who grabbed my chin roughly, turning my head until the still-red mark on my throat was bare for all to see.

My tears started flowing uncontrollably as I heard the laughter and snickers from everyone in the room.

Damon’s hand lingered on my face. “Mind if I borrow your room for a minute, Zac?”

Zac growled. Through the entire exchange, he had remained quiet, but now his voice sounded cold when he spoke. “Everyone, get out now. You’ve had your fun. I’ve won the bet – go ahead and do something else with your lives. In fact, the party is over. Go home, everyone, before I set my guards on you.”

Damon seemed alarmed, and everyone in the room muttered their disagreement, but they all left.

“Why are you overreacting?” Damon asked as he walked out. “She’s just a mere omega. Don’t tell me you’re starting to have feelings for her.”

After they left, I didn’t wait to hear one more word from Zac. I squeezed my eyes tightly shut, hoping my useless tears would stop. Then, wrapping the bedsheets around myself, I turned and fled from the room.

I was still crying as I trudged the twenty miles back home, trying not to think of the consequences of Zac marking me and imagining what my life would have been like if I had just stayed back with Beth and watched *The Greatest Showman* for the tenth time.

The blaring noise of pack police sirens reached me as soon as I turned the bend into my street. But it was only when I got to my house that I realized something was horribly wrong.

Two police cars were parked outside, and about three policemen were writing something down while Beth sat in front of the house, a blanket around her shoulders as she sobbed. The moment she spotted me, she ran to me.

“Oh, Freya! Freya! Your parents… they—”

“They what? What happened to my parents, Beth?”

It was one of the policemen who answered, gently guiding me to sit on the front steps before he told me. “There’s been a ghastly accident. A couple we believe to be your parents did not make it.”

I snorted, on the brink of hysteria. “You believe? A couple you believe to be my parents?” I retorted, emphasis on believe.

The cop seemed flustered. He turned to another cop, the one who seemed to be in charge, who walked up to meet us.

“My name is Detective Folarin, ma’am. We were called earlier to respond to an accident. An omega couple in a black Corolla made a wrong turn and ran off the bridge. By the time we got to the scene, they had drowned. We easily IDed them with the driver’s license and a few personal documents. Normally, we’d ask a family member to confirm the identification, but since you’re not twenty-one yet, it can be traumatizing—”

“I don’t care!” I shouted, feeling like the universe was playing one cruel joke on me and that all I had to do was snap out of it. “I want to see those bodies. I’m sure it’s not my parents!”

I was shaking all over. The bedsheet I had wrapped around myself was too thin, and the weather was quickly turning cold. Someone—a policewoman—put her arms around me and led me back to the steps I had stood up from.

“There’s no point, Freya—that’s your name, isn’t it? Our forensics are the best among all packs. The scents and auras of your parents matched those in our database—”

“But there could be a mistake somewhere! I—I want to make sure it’s them,” I cried.

She shook her head, pity in her eyes. “They’re not a very beautiful sight. Don’t you want to remember them as they were instead of seeing their bodies all mangled up? With the way the car hit the bridge, it bent, smashing your parents, and…”

I was already crying uncontrollably before she finished. I buried my face in my hands and wished for death.

Later, the next day, my landlord came to tell me our rent had expired. It turned out my parents had been neck-deep in debt, even though they’d never shown it.

I wondered why they’d bothered to buy new dresses for me, celebrate their anniversary in a five-star restaurant, and send me to the most expensive school in the pack, all while struggling financially.

After the landlord left, I walked into my room, packed all my ‘practical’ clothes, a few of our family photographs, and some protein bars into my backpack, and sneaked out before Beth could come over.

I didn’t know where I was going; I only knew I couldn’t stay in Darkmoon anymore. The memories were choking me.

I was going to take my chances, work, and earn my keep in any pack that would accept an omega.

Freya’s povThe way he was talking made me almost fall for his words. “Hey,” he smiled. “You still don't want to do anything with me I see.”I chuckled, getting him to get to his feet as i sighed. “I just… i just want to do something else you know.”He stared at me for a while before a knock came on the door, distracting us.It felt like he didn’t want to let me go as we stared at each other for a while. But then the knock came again as he looked at me.“You have to go take that,” he said.As I sighed, I was already too tired to go anywhere. But either way, I had no choice. I got up and went to open the door as I found Beth standing there.“Beth!” I said in shock. “How… what are you doing here?”She stared at me with a smile as I nervously chuckled. I was not expecting her here and it was shocking she had chosen to show up now.“I just… wanted to come say hi. I heard about you… incident.”“How did you know?”But she smiled. “I got my information from some sources.” I nodded. “Can I c

Freya’s pov“Shhh,” I hushed her, shutting her up, “Don’t say anything or else it’s going to cause problems.”“What do you mean? The entire pack is supposed to know about this secret. Why do us in the inner circle need to keep this a secret anyway? If my sister had been kidnapped, trust me, the entire pack would know about this.”“But she wasn’t. Now listen to me. We just need to keep this secret. If the Alpha wanted people to know when he had done the whole speech, he would have given it up. But he’s doing something about it.”“Doing what?”“I have no idea.”She gave me a smile. “You are defending him.”I turned to her sharply. “What?”“You are defending him.”I shook my head. “No, I’m not. I’m just telling you the truth or what the beta would say.”She nodded. “That’s what he will say. And that’s him defending Zac. But you are defending him out of something else. Something tells me you are falling for Zac.”I scoffed. “No way. I’m not falling for that.”But she kept on staring at me

Mark’s pov“You need to explain further,” I said to him. “You can’t just show up in my office and just drop that kind of bomb on me without me thinking something is up. So, tell me, has he said anything that is dangerous?”“Not yet.” “Then why are you telling me all of this?”“When you left after talking to us, I felt he was planning something. Like a war due to his position being taken away.”“What kind of war?” I said, relaxing in my seat while clasping my hands on my stomach.“Let’s be honest, Beta Mark, Elder Thomas is a very ambitious man.”“I know that. That is not a lie. That is the truth.”He smiled. “And ambitious men, from all history books and history songs, they tend to do things that are questionable. That means that if he wants the throne, he can have the throne only due to the Alpha allowing him to do so. And if the Alpha is weak, he can be able to have whatever he wants. I’m just here to tell you so that whatever he’s planning, you will stop it and nip it in the bud b

Mark’s povThe moment I got into my office, I found someone by the window.“What the hell?” I gasped. She turned to me and smiled. “Came to see where you work?”“No. You shouldn’t be here. The alpha can sense you.”“Relax. It’s not like he knows I’m here.”I quickly moved to where she was standing as I held her wrist in a very hard way, which had her wincing in pain.“The Alpha can sense everyone in the back house. It can sense emotions. You have no idea the power Zac has over this entire pack.”She removed her hands forcefully from mine as she stared at me in anger.“I was tired of being locked up in that room. And besides, you promised me a new identity.”“I did,” I nodded my head. “But this is not the place to do it. You are not to be here. You are not to be seen by either the Elders or the Alpha. They know who you are. They know that you are one of the Circus People. And the moment the Elders know that you are here, they will use you as a weak link. It’s why I locked you in my roo

I looked around to make sure no one was eavesdropping. “We’ll take it up like that. Handle the cases the way we need to handle it and move on with life. We don’t need to fight a losing war against the alpha.”
They exchanged glances and nodded as we all went back to eating.
I then looked across the field and saw Sarah the pack healer with someone.
I noticed that the person she was talking to was Freya… the random girl who had somehow come into this pack. I remembered her from the past. She and Alpha Zac had a history, but I didn’t know what kind of history they both had.
Either way, I didn’t care. After all, I didn’t really focus on random people like that.
She was receiving special treatment with her daughter. I wanted to know why.
“I’ll be back,” I got up and crossed the field to meet her.
She turned to me and frowned.
“Hello,” I gave my best political smile. “Can I talk to you?”
“You.” She growled.
Her frown caught me off guard. “I’m sorry. Did an

Thomas’s povI tried to keep my calm as I could feel his aura getting harsh. I had to be careful of what I said to not antagonize him.Deep inside me, my wolf warned me of the possible future of that circus thing being a failure. But I had been too stubborn to listen. Now it had backfired on me and everything was going to shit.I took in deep breaths as I had to control myself.“Look, I am sorry for everything that might have happened to your sister or your family member, but let’s be very honest, I didn’t know that they were going to kidnap people.”He scoffed. “Yes, that’s what the other elder said. But here’s the thing, you all knew that they were having people for cheap labor, right?”I nodded. “Yes, I knew about that. But in my own defense, I had no idea that they were going to kidnap people. I was thinking that they might just call you for an interview, and if you don’t like how much you are going to be paid, then you’ll be let go. I didn’t know they were kidnapping people and I
