UNSOLVABLE MATH

The end of the world didn't smell like fire or brimstone. It smelled like scorched rubber, stale adrenaline, and the wet copper tang of a slaughterhouse that had forgotten to close its doors.

"Jason, please!"

I played the desperate girlfriend well. I let my voice go thin, the sound of a woman who still believed a man's name was a safe place to store her heart. I struck the SUV's window with both palms, leaving oily smears that looked exactly like panic.

Jason didn't look at my face. He was too busy shoving a crate of my water, bought with six months of emergency funds, into the back seat.

Cami sat in the passenger seat, staring straight ahead like she could delete me by refusing to look. Three years I'd called her my best friend. Three years I'd covered her rent when her shifts got cut.

"There isn't room, Audrey!" Jason's voice cracked, jagged with his own cowardice. He wasn't looking at my eyes. He was looking at my throat, the way an appraiser looks at jewelry he's already priced as scrap. "The weight, the fuel, we have to think about the future. Three people is just math we can't solve."

"I bought the fuel, Jason. I found the keys."

I reached for the door handle. He was faster. He pried my fingers off it, one by one, with a clinical coldness that made the horde behind me feel warm by comparison. Then he shoved me, and I hit the asphalt hard enough to feel it in my teeth.

I didn't scream. I didn't beg. I watched the taillights vanish into gray, soot heavy fog, and I filed it. Jason. Cami. The five hundred dollars. The stolen water. The way he didn't blink when my head hit the road.

The first shadow fell over me. It wasn't the shadow of a man. It was rotting, gray, and driven by a hunger so complete it had become a personality.

I stayed on my hands and knees and waited.

When the teeth found my throat, the world didn't go black. It went white.

[LUS SYSTEM INITIALIZING.] [HOST VITALITY: 0.01%. ERROR.] [REVERSING ENTROPY. RECALIBRATING TIMELINE TO POINT ALPHA.] [APEX EVOLUTION: ACTIVE.]

I woke to the sound of my own lungs.

My fingers went to my neck, scraping bare, unmarred skin instead of torn muscle. For one sick second I couldn't remember why that was wrong. Only that it was.

Dead. I'm dead. This is what dead feels like.

But my hair hung heavy against my neck instead of drifting in some current, and gravity held me flat to the mattress. Not the Abyss. Not the wreck of the 4th Street intersection.

Sunlight cut gold bars across the rug. Cotton sheets under my palms, not asphalt. I understood, with the clarity that comes right before panic, that I was standing on ground a dead woman had no business touching.

I was back.

Lavender detergent. The sugared smell of peaches I'd bought yesterday. Yesterday, forty-eight hours before the first Grey S. case hit the news.

My phone buzzed on the nightstand, a hum I felt in my teeth.

Jason: Hey babe, can I borrow $500? Car repair's more than the guy quoted. Stuck at the shop. Love you!

"Love you" sat at the end of that message like a debt collector's receipt.

My hand hovered over the screen. Not shaking. My heart slammed against my ribs, but it wasn't the frantic thrum of the girl who died in the street. It was denser. Deliberate. A rhythm coming from somewhere behind my sternum that wasn't entirely mine.

[Welcome, Host.]

The voice didn't arrive through my ears. It started in my marrow and climbed until it found the back of my teeth, patient as the tide dragging stones under. [Level Up System online. Transition is usually crueler for your kind. You were already halfway to being one of ours.]

"What are you?" I whispered. My voice came out a fraction of its normal size.

[I am your leash. And I am your life. You crossed the shelf line asking to be found, Audrey. Now you find a way to make it worth the debt. The interest is already rising.]

I looked at my reflection in the dark phone screen. My eyes had dimmed at the edges, brown bleeding into a smoky, glassy gray that wasn't a color so much as an absence of light.

I looked like something the system had finished remaking.

I picked the phone back up. My fingers were perfectly steady. The trembling woman who had begged Jason for a seat in a car that wasn't his was a costume, and I folded her away neatly, somewhere I could find her again if I ever needed to wear her.

I started typing.

Me: Of course, Jason. Come over. Cami too. I've got cash in the safe. We should talk about the future.

Send.

File it, I told myself. The betrayal. The hunger. The math of who gets to live.

[Mission Assigned: Reclaim Assets.] [Reward: 5 Strength Points. 1 Predator's Mark.] [Note: Hunger is a personality, Host. Don't let yours go hungry.]

Forty-eight hours. That was all I had before the city's lungs started failing one block at a time, before the world outside my window turned into the one I'd already died in once. Forty-eight hours to turn this apartment into a tomb for the woman who begged and a fortress for the one who wouldn't have to again.

I walked to the kitchen and picked up a knife. In the morning light it didn't look like steel. It looked like a shard of something older, black and watching.

I wasn't a girl anymore. I was an investment, and interest was already accruing on every person who had ever decided I was worth less than the space I took up in a car.

Jason wanted five hundred dollars.

He had no idea what the exchange rate was about to become.

I texted one more line before I set the phone down.

Me: Bring Cami. I mean it. There's room for everyone this time.

Somewhere out there, men who didn't know my name yet were about to start sending invitations of their own. Generous ones. The kind that came wrapped in flowers and ended in debt.

I had died once already for believing a man's math. I wasn't going to do the arithmetic that way again.

I opened the door to let the last ordinary morning of my old life walk in, one last time, so I could watch exactly how it died.

John had passed just before dawn.I stood by the window in Dr. Thorne’s surgical suite, watching the pale fog drift across the lower courtyard. Beside me, Somatic Pod Zero hummed on standby, its cool blue optical lights casting long shadows across the floorboards.Down in the medical bay, the atmosphere was thick with quiet, stoic grief. Melony sat on the edge of the cot, holding her husband's cold, frail hand between both of hers. Her face was pale, lined with dark circles, but her eyes were dry—the deep, numbing exhaustion of a woman who had already cried every tear she possessed over the long weeks in Node 03.Allen and Rhea sat tucked under heavy woolen blankets in the neighboring cots, clutching two carved wooden animal figures Eli had left for them earlier that morning. They were still far too weak to walk, their faces thin and pale, but their eyes tracked their mother with quiet, solemn awareness.Dr. Thorne stood near the foot of John's bed, pulling a clean white sheet over th

  • APOCALYPSE QUEEN: LEVEL UP OR DIE   RESILIENT WOMAN

The morning sun broke over the high peaks of the mountain range, casting a pale, gold light across the stone courtyard of Apex. The air was crisp and cold, carrying the sharp scent of pine ash, wet granite, and the lingering steam from the keep’s lower bathhouse. After days of relentless tactical ops, ambush preparations, and subterranean expeditions, a rare sense of routine settled over the stronghold. But it was a new kind of routine—one defined by the growing weight of our expanded community.Down in the main courtyard, the work of unloading the Node 03 haul was in full swing.Dutch and Eli were backed up against the secondary armory doors with Flatbed One, systematically uncrating the high-capacity pulse rifles and perimeter turrets. Eli was practically vibrating with excitement, his hands moving with rapid-fire speed as he stripped down the factory grease on an automated defense processor.Yet, every two minutes, the boy’s dark eyes flicked over his shoulder toward the medical wi

The heavy pneumatic seal of Node 03's inner bulkhead gave a long, mechanical hiss as Tristan bypassed the primary control circuit. Cold, sterile air, preserved under high pressure for years, rushed out into the corridor, carrying the sharp scents of ozone, high-grade coolant, and refined lubricants. The steel blast doors parted slowly, revealing the vast, shadow-draped expanse of the primary somatic core.LUS flared brightly across my retinas, illuminating the vault in brilliant, wire-frame gold.[FACILITY SECTOR: NODE 03 MAIN CORE.][POWER STATUS: AUXILIARY GENERATORS ACTIVE (14% STAMINA).][CONTAINMENT REPOS: SOMATIC FABRICATION / MILITARY HARDWARE STORAGE.][ALERT: RATION RESERVES DEPLETED TO 0.0%.]"No food," Tristan noted smoothly, his dark eyes sweeping over the dusty shelves of empty storage bins near the entryway. "Looks like our poor family scraped every dry crumb out of the mess hall pantry months ago.""They survived on emergency water filters and sheer willpower," I murmur

The heavy iron postern gate of the Apex stronghold creaked shut behind us as the early morning fog rolled off the high pines. With Vanguard Nine neutralized and the lower timber route secured, the strike team moved out toward the old granite quarry four miles south. The team was light, fast, and lethal: Dutch, Ronan, Tristan, and myself. Flatbed One was parked half a mile back in a concealed timber blind, leaving us to move on foot through the dripping, silent forest.LUS hummed a deep, resonant baseline against my optic nerves, feeding real-time topographical data and thermal sweeps directly into my field of vision.[TACTICAL MATRIX: ACTIVE.][TARGET PROXIMITY: GRANITE QUARRY / NODE 03 PERIMETER.][SECONDARY TELEMETRY DETECTED: DEEP-CRUST SOMATIC PING.][ALERT: UNEXPECTED BIOLOGICAL SIGNATURES DETECTED WITHIN SUBTERRANEAN SECTOR.]I paused on the lip of a rocky ridge, signaling for the squad to hold.Tristan dropped to one knee beside me, unslinging his lightweight submachine gun, hi

  • APOCALYPSE QUEEN: LEVEL UP OR DIE   NODE 3

The lower holding cells beneath Node 01 were cold, damp, and smelled faintly of old iron and wet granite. Water dripped from the ceiling with a slow, rhythmic plink... plink... plink, echoing down the dark stone corridor.I descended the winding stairs, my heavy boots clicking against the steps with measured, Sovereign authority. I had refreshed after my time with Ronan, but the lingering warmth of his touch still anchored me, giving me a quiet, absolute confidence as I approached the iron-reinforced door at the end of the hall.Dutch was already waiting outside, leaning against the damp wall with his arms crossed over his leather coat, a unlit cigar tucked into the corner of his mouth. Ronan walked half a pace behind me, his massive frame filling the narrow corridor, a dark, dangerous calm settled over his broad features."How's our guest holding up?" I asked softly, stopping outside the viewport."Commander Voss is trying to keep his military discipline," Dutch replied smoothly, a l

  • APOCALYPSE QUEEN: LEVEL UP OR DIE   PERFECT FRICTION

Ronan found me in the armory after he got himself cleaned up. He was at my side kissing me before I had the chance to ask him if everything was okay. The kiss deepened, swallowing the last of the battle’s residual roar. Ronan’s mouth claimed mine with the same unrelenting force he used to tear steel doors from their hinges—hungry, absolute, and without hesitation. His thick fingers tightened in my hair, angling my head so he could take more, tongue stroking against mine in a rhythm that sent heat pooling low and fast between my thighs.I arched into him, boots braced against the workbench edge, hands sliding from his shoulders down the hard planes of his chest. Sweat and residual blood still streaked his skin; the dark hair across his pectorals was damp, and when my palms dragged over it the friction pulled a low, guttural sound from deep in his throat. That sound vibrated straight through me.He broke the kiss only long enough to drag his mouth along my jaw, then lower, teeth scrapi
