Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: September
Before I could finish the sentence, Vincent’s face darkened, and he charged straight at me.

I slammed my hand down on the panic button under the table first, the one Leo had installed just for emergencies, the one that would send the full estate security team straight to the main house the second it was pressed.

Then I scrambled backward until my back hit the wall.

Vincent saw exactly what I’d done. He didn’t panic, though. He just stopped in his tracks and let out a cold, mocking laugh.

“Hit the panic button? Good.” He took two slow steps forward, staring daggers at my pregnant belly. “I was worried there’d be no audience. Today, everyone in this estate’s gonna see exactly what kind of whore the so-called Mrs. Sorrentino is, and whose bastard she’s carrying.”

The second the words left his mouth, his right hand shot into his suit jacket, pulled out a loaded Beretta, and pressed the muzzle straight to my forehead.

The cold metal seeped through my skin, and my whole body went rigid. I clamped both hands over my stomach, holding my breath, scared to even breathe too hard in case he snapped and pulled the trigger.

Lena hurried to his side, a triumphant grin on her face. “Told you this was the only way. She’s been hiding behind that Mrs. Sorrentino title for too long. Today we make her tell the truth.”

Vincent kept the gun pressed hard to my forehead, his voice sharp and vicious, every word a threat: “I’m gonna ask you again. Whose bastard is it? ”

I gritted my teeth, and said every word slow and clear: “It’s not a bastard. It’s Leo’s baby.”

Vincent froze for a split second, then burst out laughing.

“Seraphina, are you fucking kidding me? Everyone in the New York underworld knows my uncle Leo took a bullet saving the Don ten years ago! He can’t have kids! You couldn’t even come up with a better lie than that?”

Lena jumped in right away, backing him up: “Vincent’s the only rightful heir to the Sorrentino family. The Don froze all his offshore accounts just to force him to come home and take over. You really think anyone’s gonna buy that you’re carrying Leo’s kid?”

Vincent had run off with Lena for three years, hadn’t called the family once.

The Don was well and truly done with him, that’s why he’d frozen the accounts, cut him off for good.

But Lena had him wrapped around her finger, blind with rage, and all he could see was hatred for me.

I stared at the gun in his hand, didn’t dare push him further.

I forced my voice steady, shaky but firm: “I’m not lying. It’s Leo’s baby. If you don’t believe me, I’ll call him. He’ll tell you himself.”

I kept one hand glued to my stomach, going for the satellite phone on the table.

But my fingers had barely brushed the phone when Vincent kicked the table so hard it slid across the room, the phone flying into the wall and shattering to pieces.

He stepped in closer, the gun now digging into my temple, his eyes black with rage.

“My uncle’s a loose cannon. The whole underworld’s scared shitless of him. If he finds out I couldn’t even handle my own wife cheating on me, he’ll think I’m weak. He’ll never hand the family over to me.”

“That’s what this is about, isn’t it? Calling Leo, so he can come in here and humiliate me in front of everyone?”

I shook my head fast, my voice cracking with fear: “No! I just want you to know the truth..."

Before I could finish, Lena stepped forward and shoved me hard by the shoulder. I stumbled back, a sharp, heavy cramp hit my stomach, and my face went white.

“Vincent, why are you even wasting your breath on her?”

Lena stared daggers at me, her voice sharp and venomous.

"When the security team gets here, everyone’ll see what a shameless whore she is! We’ll have proof to take to the Don, and she’ll never be able to call herself Mrs. Sorrentino again!”

The cramp in my stomach got worse, and I felt the baby flutter inside me. A wave of cold terror washed over me.

I stared at the gun in Vincent’s hand, begged him with every ounce of strength I had left: “Please. Save my baby.”

Lena pulled out her phone, flipped the camera on, and pointed it straight at my face, a cruel grin on her lips: “Get on your knees right now, and I’ll let your baby live.”

If Thaddeus had stood before me, hard and unyielding, demanding I spare Vincent’s life, my resolve would only have grown stronger. Leo was the de facto head of the Sorrentino family now, and he would have stood with me, no matter what. But he’d laid down his pride, a lifetime of power and authority, and begged to take the punishment for his grandson’s sins. For a long moment, I didn’t know what to do.Leo stepped up behind me, his hand steady on my waist. His sharp gaze swept over everyone gathered, and he snapped at the guards: “What are you standing around for? Are you going to let the Don make a fool of himself like this? Escort him off the grounds, now.”The guards snapped to attention at once, two of them stepping forward to gently but firmly lead Thaddeus away from the cemetery.Leo saw the fight leave my body, and took the gun from my hand softly, his voice low and gentle: “I’m this baby’s father. Vengeance is mine to take. Step back, my love, you don’t need to see this, don’t ne

She slammed her forehead into the hard stone ground over and over, sobbing and begging for mercy: “Seraphina, it was Vincent who hurt your baby! Take your revenge on him, please! Just let me go!”Vincent’s head snapped around, his eyes blazing with rage as he stared at her: “You lied to me?!”With her lies exposed, Lena dropped her meek act entirely, sneering at him: “You’re only mad because you were stupid enough to believe it! I photoshopped two pictures and told you they were Seraphina, and you ate it up! You threw away your place as the Sorrentino heir and ran off with me like a fool!”Something in Vincent snapped. He broke free of the guards’ hold with a feral roar, and lunged at Lena, hands outstretched for her throat.“You bitch! You ruined my life! I’ll kill you!”They rolled across the stone, tearing at each other like wild animals. Lena was weaker than Vincent, but she fought dirty, her nails raking at the open wounds on his face and body.I stepped back, watching the dog-eat

Leo held me and the baby tighter, his dark eyes blazing with unbridled, murderous rage.“Seraphina, I swear to you, I will never let the people who hurt you and our baby walk free. Every bit of pain you’ve endured today, I will make them pay back.”Leo and I had our son cremated, and laid him to rest in the most auspicious, peaceful plot in the family cemetery.Vincent and Lena were dragged to the gravesite by the security detail, and forced to their knees before our baby’s headstone. It had only been a few days, but I barely recognized the two people before me.They were filthy, unkempt, their bodies covered in oozing whip marks, the air around them thick with the stench of sewage and blood.Leo pressed a steel-reinforced iron baton into my hand.“Seraphina, you do to them whatever you want. I’ll back you up, no matter what.”I closed my fingers around the baton, and looked down at the two people on their knees. They paled at once, bowing their heads and kowtowing frantically, begging

The words hung in the air, and Vincent and Lena froze on the spot. It was a long moment before they found their voices, stammering in disbelief: “That’s impossible! Seraphina is my wife, how could she be with Uncle Leo? And everyone knows Uncle Leo wants nothing to do with women, that he was born sterile!”Thaddeus looked at Vincent, his eyes sharp with disappointment: “The day you ran out on your wedding for Lena, Seraphina married Leo right there. Every one of the Five Families, the entire underworld, knows this. How could you be the only one who didn’t?”Vincent went rigid, his mind going completely blank. After he’d run off with Lena three years prior, terrified the family would track them down and drag them back, the two of them had cut off all contact with New York entirely, fleeing to South America where they squandered his money and lived it up across country after country. It was only when his accounts were frozen months prior, leaving them completely broke, that they’d scra

Leo’s roar froze Vincent solid in an instant. A fear of this “Iceman of the Underworld” had been ingrained in his very bones since childhood. In a few long strides, Leo was at my side, slicing through the ropes binding my wrists and ankles. His eyes locked on the blood steadily streaming down my legs, his voice tight with barely contained panic: “Seraphina, I’m taking you to the medical center right now.”I looked up at Leo, tears spilling uncontrollably down my cheeks. I clutched at his arm, my voice barely a whisper: “Leo… the baby… please save our baby…”A flicker of unnameable panic shot through Vincent at the sight. But when his eyes landed on Don Thaddeus Sorrentino, his grandfather, the Don of the Sorrentino family, he immediately steeled himself again. He was the only male grandson of the Sorrentino line, the boy the Don had raised and groomed as the family heir his whole life. The old man would never let anything happen to him.He rushed forward at once, putting on a perfor

With that gun still pressed to my temple, I didn’t have a choice. For my baby, I’d do anything.I slowly bent my knees, and knelt down on the cold marble floor.Lena leaned down over me, that triumphant smile still on her face.“Seraphina, did you ever think this would happen? Back when I got on my knees and begged you not to marry Vincent?”Before the wedding, Lena had snuck to see me, knelt on my floor, and begged me to call off the marriage. She said her and Vincent were in love. But the marriage between the Sorrentinos and the Morettis wasn’t just about love. It was the backbone of the entire East Coast arms smuggling ring. Lives depended on it. If I called it off, the blame would fall on my family, the Morettis, and we’d be ruined. I’d had no choice but to say no.I never thought she’d hold that against me, all these years later.I didn’t have the energy to rehash it now. I looked up at them, my voice breaking, begging: “Please. Call a doctor. I’ll let this all go, I swear, jus

Vincent flew at me in a rage, yanking me clean off the couch.“Bullshit! I left with Lena the day of the wedding, and I haven’t set foot on Long Island once in three years. How the hell could that baby be mine?”I almost laughed. I never said it was his. The Sorrentino family had more than one man i
