Susanna

My hands were clasped so tightly together in my lap that the bones ached. The skin had gone pale and bloodless from the pressure, but I couldn’t bring myself to loosen my grip. Every part of me was trembling; my fingers, my jaw, even the muscles in my thighs. I sat there frozen in the back of the car as Reginald parked outside the station. No one moved even though we had arrived at our destination, not me, not Florence.

The silence was suffocating.

Reginald turned in his seat, his face calm, but I could see the flicker of discomfort in his eyes as he glanced between us. He saw the dread twisted into every inch of my posture, the way I kept blinking rapidly, trying to chase away the tears that wouldn’t stop pooling.

“Ma’am,” he said softly, “just wait here for a moment. I’ll go in and speak to the officers first and make the necessary arrangements.”

I nodded once but he was already getting out, the door closing behind him with a solid thunk.

As soon as he was gone, Florence shi

Abigail I could still hear the sound of the violent, echoing blast of twisted metal in my ears. It was like a gunshot to the world, declaring that Abigail Remington had died screaming, devoured by flames and vengeance. That was the illusion, anyway. In truth, I had never screamed.I had watched it all happen from the rear window of a black coupe, tucked into the back seat with my knees pressed tightly together, my dark dress folded beside me and my face mask still snug against my skin. The second explosion had come just as Daniel hit the gas, and the force of it shook the car. Even then, I didn’t wince.Instead, I leaned my head against the window and gave a long, relieved sigh.It was done.We had only had minutes to execute the entire thing. I had left Susanna and Conrad behind at the graveyard, my steps fast but not frantic. My fingers pressed lightly to the rim of my hat as if I were adjusting it rather than holding myself together. The moment I got to the car, I took off the hat

Susanna The smoke curled up into the air like a dark spirit set free, and I couldn’t tear my eyes from it. The tendrils billowed and twisted, dancing in the distance where Abigail’s car had crashed. My heart thumped in my chest, not with grief or terror, but with a pulsing, bewildering adrenaline. Was she dead? Was she truly gone?I didn’t have time to dwell on the thought before Conrad’s hands were on my shoulders, shaking me so hard my teeth clattered. As he shook me like a ragdoll, I only watched him, fascinated by how easily his face crumbled with just a hint of the truth. “Did you know?” he roared, his voice cracking like a whip. “Have you known all along?! Have you known that your enviable life was meant to be Abigail's all along?!”His grip tightened around my flesh, his nails biting into my arms through the fabric of my blouse. I didn’t wince at the painful sensation. I was too far gone to care about pain or shame or consequence. I had buried Liliana, and maybe now I would g

Susanna“You’re lying! She’s dead because of you!” I screamed, each word scraping my throat raw. My voice came out choked and desperate, but I didn’t care. “You might not have set her on fire with your own hands, but your poison led him there! Don’t act like you’re innocent!”Abigail’s eyes didn’t soften. She held my gaze with that same cold, composed look that made me feel like a child in the shadow of something too vast and too sharp to touch.I shakily took a step towards her, rage and sorrow racing through my limbs. “You think you’re so smart, don’t you? But I see it. I feel it! Your hands carry her blood! You think you can just… you can just stand there and pretend none of this is on you?”My vision swam, tears blurring everything except her expression. She still had that same goddamned impassive face.My fists clenched at my sides. “This is all about what I did back then, isn’t it?!” I spat. “You’ve wanted to ruin me ever since. Admit it. All of this… every cruel twist, every

SusannaEver since we buried Liliana, I had made a habit of coming here to her grave site, every day, like clockwork. I didn’t tell anyone but then again, I didn’t really need to. No one cared enough to ask, anyway, not even Florence, who had returned to her robotic, overly professional demeanor the moment I snapped at her two days after the burial. Not even Conrad who had not even bothered to call me and offer his condolences, even if they would be insincere. It was just me and the ghost of Liliana now.Sometimes I talked when I visited. Sometimes I sat in silence. Sometimes I said nothing at all but wept like I had that first day, when the ground was still soft and freshly disturbed. Now, the earth had hardened a little, but not me. I was still cracked wide open.I left the hospital that afternoon dressed in the new clothes I’d had Florence buy me last week—high-waisted trousers in a dusty mauve shade and a cream blouse with loose sleeves. I had barely looked in the mirror before I

Susanna The rest of the day passed in a blur, my body moving without any real sense of direction, as if I were navigating through someone else’s life. The moment we arrived at the funeral home, I shook off whatever fragility lingered inside me. I couldn’t afford to be soft now. If no one else would bury my sister with dignity, then I would. I would see to every last detail myself. A man in a navy-blue suit approached me at the entrance, his voice professional. I told him who I was and why I was there. He nodded, gently ushering Florence and me into a side office that smelled of lavender and paperwork. I reached into the handbag Marceline had sent and retrieved several bundles, peeling off notes without batting an eye. I paid for the burial plot, the casket, and the funeral clothing, though I had no idea how they would be able to get it on Liliana's corpse. Every transaction chipped something off my soul, but I didn’t stop. The man, I think his name was Marcus, led us down a hallway
