I couldn’t process what he was saying. The words kept tumbling around in my skull, refusing to land. “Wha–what do I have to do with any of this?”

Misha’s starless eyes were too steady. “Vescari lost them. All four of his children. Dead. Murdered. One by one. An illness, too, maybe. Now he’s looking for the one he never claimed. The one no one knew about. The dirty little secret. You.”

My head shook before I could stop it, violently, as if I could shake the truth out of existence. “That doesn’t make sense. You said Vescari paid my father for me. Are you saying he—he bought me? Like a transaction?”

Misha didn’t blink. “Maybe you should ask your father. Whichever one it is. Ask both of them, even.”

“No. No, this can’t be—he’s a monster—this can’t be true.” A prickling burn stung the corners of my eyes. “Why would you—why would you do this to me?”

Misha didn’t look away. “Because Vescari killed my family.”

I stopped breathing.

Misha's crooked grin returned like a harbinger of destruction as he stared at each of Sebastian's friends. “When I’m done with you, you’ll be praying you only lost your woman.”So, I turned to Misha with a clear intention of refusing it. “You don't get to do this, I’m not your–”“Angel.”I hated it when he called me that.Misha's starless dark eyes seemed to gleam somehow. “Let’s dry their trust funds and inheritance out.”And just like that. Everything had been settled before I even got any say in this. We stepped into the private poker lounge that Sebastian's friends booked. Misha’s hand rested lightly on my lower back, steering me toward the table like this was all routine. Maybe it was for him, I didn't know.Sebastian hesitated at the entrance. He didn’t say anything, but his reluctance was obvious in the way his steps slowed, in the stiffness of his shoulders. He didn’t want me here among them.

  • Accidentally Kidnapped the Warlord and Became His Wife   18. Brother by Blood, Stranger by Choice

"...Lorry?”The name was said too softly, too hesitantly, like the speaker already regretted saying it. But I knew that familiar voice too well.I turned, my stomach coiling tight, and saw him.Sebastian, my brother.Or… half-brother.That word still scraped against the walls of my mind like broken glass. Vincent Vescari. The name Misha had said with grave finality this morning. Not Zachary Redmond. Not the man I called father my whole life.Sebastian wore a navy suit, and his hair was neatly parted at the side. His drink was untouched, fingers clutched tight around the glass like it was the only thing keeping him from falling apart. And those tired, familiar eyes widened as they met mine. For a split second, the urge to hug him was nearly overwhelming. He had always been the one who shielded me when Father’s moods got sharp, who shared secret snacks under the old piano bench, who stayed up with me when I had ni

I didn’t expect that reaction. His jaw had actually slackened. Misha Ashford, the legendary warlord, the elusive billionaire, was stunned speechless by me.A shiver of horror chased up my spine as my own gaze dipped lower to the impossible proof of how much I affected him. And then something else crept in behind the embarrassment.Power.Something I almost didn't recognise. Not after Ezra's betrayal with Meredith. Not after Misha revealed that the man I always knew to be my father was not even mine to begin with.I shifted just slightly, crossing my legs the other way, and the thigh-high slit of the dress responded like a secret weapon, sliding higher. His gaze followed it like a man possessed. That was the moment I realized I didn’t want to obey him. Not tonight. Maybe not ever again.“Get off of the car,” Misha’s voice was low and jagged as broken glass.I cocked a brow. “Or what?”His eyes burned d

“What are we doing here?” I asked, my voice still slightly fizzy from champagne and the high of petty satisfaction.Misha kept on walking. “Clothes.”“I have clothes,” I stopped short on the sidewalk. “I can swing by the house later and—” “No.” His voice was flat, leaving no room for argument. “You’re not going back there.”It wasn’t a suggestion.Honestly? I didn’t want to go back either. Not after yesterday. Not after the way they stood by and watched me be humiliated in front of an entire courtyard. Not after my father—no, the man who raised me, not my father—wanted me to still marry the man who cheated on me with my own sister. He didn't give me a goddamn ounce of concern. And now, after this morning’s casual bombshell that Zachary Redmond wasn’t even my biological father?Screw him.I looked down, jaw tight, heart heavier than I wanted to admit. “I wasn’t planning on it.”“Good,” Misha s

  • Accidentally Kidnapped the Warlord and Became His Wife   15. Can't Handle Hand-me-downs

I eyed the champagne flute warily as the boutique attendant placed it gently in my hand like it was holy. Dom Pérignon, a vintage, no less. Liquid money in a crystal glass.Tempting.But I was a lightweight. Embarrassingly so. One sip too many and I’d either start crying about betrayal or serenading the entire boutique with Taylor Swift ballads. Both were solid options for a breakdown, but neither was ideal when I was supposed to be playing the perfectly happy Mrs. Ashford.I was about to refuse when I glanced across the boutique.Ezra’s jaw was locked. Meredith had her arms crossed, her pastel sundress now slightly rumpled as she snapped something under her breath. They were standing in front of the ring case, gesturing and frowning, clearly struggling to find something that could outshine the Legacy Vault set I had chosen. Oh, this was worth the risk.I took a sip. Then another.A warmth spread down my throat and into

I stiffened, rooted at my place. I didn’t even have to turn around. I knew that voice. That laugh. That particular mix of arrogance and fake charm that made my stomach twist in the worst way.I turned just slightly and felt my entire body lock up.There they were.Ezra, my ex-fiancé, looked smug, strolling like he owned the boutiqueAnd Meredith, my sister, wore a pastel sundress and that infuriatingly innocent smile that had always made people believe she was the victim. My younger sister, who had stolen him with doe eyes and sugar-sweet lies. Or maybe it was Ezra who slithered into her bed while I was too naïve to see it coming. They stood side by side, arms entwined like they hadn’t blown my world to pieces just last week. They were here.At the same boutique. At the same time. Probably shopping for wedding rings.Of all the people I’d prepared myself to face today, those two were the last I wanted
