Vanessa's POV.

I wished there was a way for me to slam the elevator hard so the weight could shake the walls of the hospital. The anger burning inside of me was something no one could easily quench.

I walked towards the parking lot as I held my car keys tightly in my hand. Doctor Morgan wanted the father of my unborn baby present. Or a family member.

The father? The man who didn't think twice when he looked me straight in the eyes and denied he even knew me? The same bastard of a man who was more than happy to use me for a one-night stand but wouldn't dare own up and take responsibility for what came up after the pleasurable night.

And as for my family? No one knew. No one because if my mother heard the news of this pregnancy. She wouldn't let me have my peace, not like she has been letting me have it anyways. She is just so hell bent on getting me remarried.

It wasn't that easy. Nothing in my life was ever easy. I felt shame and anger inside of me as the emotions made it impossible for me to breathe properly, but beneath all my hatred had begun to spread through my body like poison.

Zane.

If he had just said, Yes, I know her and she matters to me. Then maybe I wouldn't be standing here, abandoned and humiliated. I felt disgust swoosh through me. Men were all the same, users, liars, parasites dressed in expensive suits and dripping fake charm. Damon, Zane, every single one of them were all the same.

I climbed into my car and slammed the door shut, as I inserted my keys and pressed my foot hard on the brakes because I needed to get away from the horrific smell of the hospital I found myself in. I despised it a whole lot and I didn't want to be suffocated.

But the moment I drove out from the parking lot at full speed. A small figure ran past the road.

“Shit Vanessa!” I cursed out loudly and I slammed the brakes of my car so hard that I felt a sharp pain in my stomach. My heart nearly fell out of my chest.

In front of me was a child who looked frozen to the spot, with wide eyes as tears streamed down her face. She looked not older than five years of age and immediately I opened my car and stepped out as panic rushed through me.

“Hey baby girl. Are you okay?” I asked but the girl's cries grew louder and for no damn reason I felt pain. Maybe because I was just about to unintentionally end her life.

“Mommy! Mommy!” she cried out and I swallowed hard.

I slowly moved towards her and lowered down to her level.

“Shhh my love, it's okay. I'm not going to hurt you. You are safe, sweetheart. Look at me.” I said, trying to calm her down and she finally listened to me as her sobs turned into hiccups for a moment, her big brown eyes staring at me.

My hand moved on it's own, even when I didn't wait and I gently brushed the hair that was on her face sideways.

“You are safe now princess. Just breathe with me, okay? In….and out….just like that, good girl”

Slowly, her cries softened and I felt something twisted painfully in my stomach. What the heck was wrong with my baby? I was enlightened to an extent about carrying a pregnancy and I know that a baby doesn't kick in three weeks so why was mine trying to make life unbearable for me?

“Thank you! Oh, God, thank you!” A woman screamed out as she came running from across the street, towards us.

She looked breathless and her face was pale. She carried the little girl into her arms, hugging her tightly and kissing her forehead over and over again.

The girl sniffed back her tears but snuggled into her mother's tight embrace as she clung tightly to her.

“I just went into the supermarket for one minute,” the woman explained quickly as shame was written all over her face. “I told my daughter to wait right here, but she might have crossed the road thinking she could find me-” her voice broke as she hugged her daughter tighter.

“She is okay. And that is what matters now, So there is no need for you to cry over spilled milk” I said as the woman's eyes welled with relief.

“I have never seen anyone calm her down that fast. Usually, once she starts crying, she won't stop until she decides to and it actually takes so long. You…you must be extremely good with kids. Do you have any of your own?”

“No, I don't have any kids of my own. And I don't plan to” I replied, chuckling at my own words. Her smile softened at me and it felt as though she could read my thoughts.

“You will make a wonderful mother. I can tell from the way my daughter trusted you instantly. It says something”

The little girl lifted her face to look at me, then she gave me the smallest smile ever with her extremely wet eyes which I found so cute.

My emotions kicked in and I looked away, pressing a hand on my stomach without thinking.

A mother.

The word felt foreign and terrifying to me. But for the first time since that hospital appointment, it didn't feel impossible for me.

I watched the way the little girl felt comfortable in her mother's arms and the way the mother kissed every tear of hers as though it was sacred stirred up a feeling in my heart I didn't know existed. And the right word for it was motherly instinct.

Maybe I didn't want to erase this part of me. Maybe this baby growing in my womb deserved more than my fear.

“Take care of her” I said as I forcefully smiled at them and swallowed hard.

I entered back into my car and drove away as my hand stayed on my stomach and for the first time I felt comfortable with my decision and I whispered slowly.

“I am going to keep you and that is my final decision. I promise I won't go back on my words”

Her arrogance was gone and I was proud of myself.I folded my arms across my chest as I watched the scenario that unfolded in front of me like a queen who had just declared war.“Go on, officers. Please put the cuffs on her, I believe it will suit her more than her fancy jewelleries” I said softly as Sabrina's lips began to shake, then she turned to Damon.“Damon, please say something. Don't just stand there as though you can't see what is going on! Don't let them take me away. It was almost casual but the white envelope I noticed in his hand wasn't casual at all.“What are you holding tightly onto Lawrence? Why do I feel you are here to complete a mission?” I asked with a frown on my face as I stepped aside for him to make his way inside the mansion.“It belongs to you. It is your divorce petition.
