Chapter 3

Author: Echo
An hour later, a stunning blonde walked into Marco’s office.

I pretended to organize files nearby, straining to listen.

“Baby, I missed you,” Marco’s voice was syrupy sweet again. It made my stomach turn.

“You look extra handsome today,” the woman cooed.

“I wore the new suit,” Marco said. “And the cufflinks you like. I want to make a good impression when I meet your parents tonight.”

“Darling, you’re already perfect. My father is going to love you.”

Meeting her parents? New suit? The cufflinks she likes?

The truth hit me like a ton of bricks.

I was just the side piece. The fun little secret he used to help him pick out date-night accessories. An online mistress he could keep in the dark.

And the blonde, she was the one he was serious about. The one he was taking home to mommy and daddy.

My heart shattered, and a wave of nausea washed over me.

All those sweet messages for three months, the words that made me blush… they were all lies. I was just a plaything to him, something to be tossed aside.

With trembling hands, I pulled out my phone and sent one last message to Rex:

“You’re a scumbag. We’re done.”

Then, without a second’s hesitation, I blocked and deleted him.

Done. I leaned against the wall, taking deep breaths, trying to fight back the anger and humiliation.

A few minutes later, Marco walked out, hand-in-hand with his girlfriend, and saw her to the door.

He didn’t even look fazed.

A bitter taste filled my mouth, but I tried to console myself. At least no one knew about my pathetic little secret.

If I couldn’t have love, I would have my career.

I was a smart woman. I wasn’t about to throw away a high-paying job over some guy.

The next day, Marco called me into the conference room to present a business plan to Don Alessandro.

It was my first time seeing the legendary Don up close.

Alessandro Falcone sat on the sofa, and he wasn't the old, gray-haired man I’d imagined. He was young, with deep-set gray eyes that seemed to strip you bare.

He wore a custom navy-blue suit that made him look even more handsome.

My eyes lingered on the suit for a second.

I remembered telling Rex once that I loved a man in a navy suit, that it was more mysterious than black.

Just a coincidence, I told myself.

“Miss Liliana, you may begin,” his voice was a low, magnetic rumble that demanded attention.

I forced myself to stay calm and launched into my report on financial data and market analysis.

The whole time, Alessandro listened in silence, occasionally nodding or asking a sharp, insightful question.

Marco sat beside him, adding a comment here and there, but mostly he kept his head down, taking notes, looking distracted.

Probably thinking about his blonde girlfriend. A fresh pang of hurt shot through me.

When I finished, I gave a respectful nod, ready to leave, but Alessandro suddenly stopped me.

“Liliana, wait.”

He rose slowly from the sofa and walked toward me.

My instinct was to step back, but I forced myself to stand still.

He stopped right in front of me, his gray eyes fixed on a spot on my collarbone.

It was a single mole, my only birthmark. It was in an odd spot, usually hidden by my clothes, but visible when I wore a lower-cut top.

“That mark on your collarbone… it’s very distinct,” Alessandro said suddenly. His voice was laced with an unnerving familiarity, completely different from the stoic man who had been listening to my report.

Panic seized me.

I had sent Rex a picture showing my collarbone once. He’d replied, I want to kiss that mole while you’re screaming my name.

I instinctively glanced at Marco, but his face was a mask of confusion.

“Is… is it?” I stammered, covering the spot with my hand. “I guess a lot of people have them.”

Alessandro’s words made everything click into place.I stared at him, my voice trembling. “You… You’re Rex?”“Took you long enough, sweetheart,” he sneered. He pulled his phone from his suit pocket and held it out to me.I took it with a shaky hand. On the screen was our chat. My chat with Rex. But now, a red banner was displayed across the top: YOU HAVE BEEN BLOCKED BY THIS USER.“No…” I whispered. “It can’t be you…”“And why not?” he bit out, his jaw tight. “Because I’m one of those ‘dangerous mobsters’ you’re so afraid of?”Behind me, Marco was still trying to defend himself, but Alessandro just waved a hand. Two bodyguards appeared and dragged Marco out of the room. The study fell silent.“When?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper. “When did you know it was me?”Alessandro stepped closer, his long fingers tracing the line of my collarbone. “The first moment I saw you.”I looked down at the tiny mole.“After all,” he murmured, his thumb brushing over the mark, “I’ve memorized this s

The next morning, I woke with a splitting headache.I sat up, trying to piece together what happened last night, but it was all a blur.I reached for my wrist and my heart stopped. The pearl bracelet my grandmother left me was gone.It was my most prized possession. I never took it off.Panicked, I rushed downstairs, searching the living room, the dining room, the terrace. It was nowhere.Thinking Alessandro might have seen it, I hurried to his study. But as I raised my hand to knock, I heard a familiar voice inside.“Don, I really don’t know what to do!” It was Marco, his voice frantic. “Angelina almost shot me last night just because I texted an ex back!”My hand froze in mid-air.“Then maybe you should learn to control yourself,” Alessandro replied, his tone bored.“I swear it meant nothing!” Marco was practically whining. “But she won’t believe me. She’s talking about calling off the engagement. Don, I’m desperate.”That was it. My blood boiled. The hangover, the missing bracelet,

When I woke up the next morning, my memory of the night was hazy.I touched my forehead.I told myself it had to be a dream.Downstairs, Alessandro was eating breakfast, looking completely normal. That settled it. It was just a weird dream. There was no way the cold, aloof Don would sneak into my room to kiss me.But I didn’t notice the intense way he watched me when he thought I wasn’t looking. That evening, Alessandro said, “You still seem distracted. Let me take you somewhere. To clear your head.”“That’s not necessary, Don, I…”“Come with me,” he insisted. He led me to the rooftop terrace of the estate. The view was incredible, overlooking all of Miami as night began to fall.“The view from here is beautiful,” he said, standing beside me. “Especially tonight.”I just nodded politely. He took out his phone, said a few short words, and hung up.“Just a minute,” he said, checking his watch. “It’s almost time.”“Time for what?” I asked. He didn’t answer. Instead, he gave a soft snap of

After the chaos died down, Alessandro’s face was still like stone.“It’s not safe here,” he told his bodyguard. “Get the car. We’re going to the estate.”“Don, I can go back to the hotel…” I started to say.“No,” he cut me off. “You’re staying with me until I say it’s safe. End of discussion.”Twenty minutes later, we pulled into a sprawling private estate. At night, the main villa—a three-story Mediterranean-style mansion—was a grand silhouette against the moonlight.“This is my private residence in Miami,” Alessandro explained as he led me inside. “Only a handful of my most trusted men know about this place.”He poured me a glass of red wine and took one for himself. We sat in a spacious lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a private, moonlit beach.“Did what happened tonight scare you?” he asked, his voice softer than usual. “Don’t worry. I’ll protect you.”A warmth spread through my chest. But I reminded myself to be logical. He was just being the Don, protecting an ass

After the dinner, Alessandro insisted on driving me home.“I can get a cab,” I said politely.“It’s late. You’re with me,” he replied, his tone leaving no room for argument.Inside his luxury car, the air was filled with the faint scent of his cologne. Soft light cast shadows on his chiseled face, making him look even more mysterious. We drove in silence for a while.“Liliana,” he said suddenly, his voice low in the confined space.“Don?” I turned to him.“If a woman… broke things off with a man,” he began slowly, his eyes dark as he looked at me, “what should he do?”The question stunned me.The cold, ruthless Don was asking me for relationship advice?“You’re the Don. You control the entire family,” I said, trying to flatter him. “I can’t imagine any woman would dare to do that to you.”He turned and looked at me deeply, a strange smile on his lips. “You’d be surprised.”His gaze made me nervous.“Well… maybe that woman just doesn’t know her own heart yet,” I offered, trying to give

Alessandro’s brow furrowed as he watched me look at Marco. He said nothing more, his gaze slowly retracting. He sat back down on the sofa, flipping through my report.“This is good. Perfect, in fact.”Marco’s face lit up. “Really, Don?”“It’s the most detailed market analysis I’ve ever seen,” Alessandro said, his voice calm but filled with approval. “Miss Liliana’s skills are impressive.”I felt a rush of pride. A compliment from the Don himself was no small thing. The atmosphere lightened, and Marco even dared to joke, “Don, this is the first time I’ve ever seen you be so pleasant to a woman. You usually can’t stand them…”He trailed off as Alessandro shot him an icy glare. Marco shrank back into his seat.I glanced at Alessandro, curious. The Don hated women? Then why had he just stood so close to me?“Liliana,” Alessandro said, turning to me. “I require a companion for an important business dinner tonight. You will accompany me.”It wasn’t a question. It was a command.“Of course. I
