Chapter 3

Author: Maude
A young man wearing a loud, patterned shirt, with a thick gold chain hanging around his neck, sauntered over surrounded by a cluster of bodyguards.

He walked with a lazy swagger, a cigar clamped between his teeth. It was Brett Statham, the Stathams' good-for-nothing heir.

The moment Melanie spotted him, her whole face lit up like she'd found her savior.

She scrambled up off the ground, and before she'd even fully steadied herself, she threw herself at him.

"Brett! You're finally here! The plane… I wrecked your plane."

Brett glanced at the half-submerged jet out in the water, his brow furrowing, and blew out a ring of smoke.

"Are you kidding me? I just got my hands on that thing, and it's at the bottom of the ocean because of you?"

Melanie's sobbing only got louder.

"Brett, I'm sorry. It's my fault; I'm just not very good at flying.

"But it's not completely my fault either. It was Elizabeth. She wouldn't stop pestering me to take her up in the air, and I panicked."

She pointed at me, her eyes full of wounded resentment.

Brett followed her finger and looked me over, his gaze lingering a second too long, a leering little smile spreading across his face.

"Oh? She's the one who talked you into it?"

Jamie stepped forward immediately, putting on a show of shielding Brett's view of me, his tone righteous.

"Brett, Elizabeth just made a bad call in the moment. Sure, Melanie was the one who flew the plane and crashed it, and we own up to that. It's just the cost of the damages. Could you give Elizabeth a little more time?"

Brett laughed and clapped Jamie on the shoulder.

"Kid, you've got guts. But the money…"

He let the sentence trail off, his eyes drifting back to me. He licked his lips.

"My plane's gone, and I'm not happy about it. But Elizabeth isn't bad-looking. If she'll have dinner with me, we can talk this whole thing over."

Dead silence fell over the beach.

Every eye turned to me.

Something like triumph flickered across Melanie's face before she quickly rearranged her expression into worry.

"Brett, that's not really appropriate. Elizabeth has a boyfriend."

Jamie's face twitched. But then his eyes flicked to the wreckage floating in the water, worth tens of millions of dollars, then to the pack of hard-faced bodyguards standing behind Brett. His fists clenched and unclenched, and in the end, he lowered his head and said nothing.

My heart went cold, all the way through.

So this was the man who'd once chased after me and sworn he'd be good to me forever.

Not only was he letting me take the fall, he'd gone completely silent the moment someone suggested I buy my way out with dinner.

Seeing Jamie stay quiet, Brett's smile only grew more shameless, and he strode toward me.

"What, you don't want to?

"Fine by me, then. You and your best friend and your loving boyfriend can all go sit in a jail cell together. That wreck out there is worth enough to put you away for over a decade, don't you think?"

Melanie grabbed frantically at Brett's sleeve.

"Brett, no, please don't call the police! Jamie still has school. Elizabeth, Elizabeth, say something! If you just agree, all of us can get out of this!"

She kept shooting me urgent, pleading looks.

The classmates around us started murmuring again.

"Maybe Elizabeth should just say yes. It would save herself, and it would save Jamie and Melanie too."

"Right, it's just one dinner. It's not like Elizabeth's losing anything."

"Elizabeth, don't be so selfish."

I looked around at every ugly, self-satisfied face in that crowd. I looked at the man I'd once loved, his head bowed in cowardice. I looked at Melanie's performance, pushed past the point of absurdity.

And I started to laugh.

"What's so funny, Elizabeth?"

Jamie finally raised his head, staring at me with obvious disappointment written across his face.

"You can still laugh, after everything? Are you really willing to let Melanie and me go to prison just to protect your reputation? You're being so selfish."

Brett scowled too. "Cute little thing, you're getting mouthy, aren't you?"

I let the smile drop and looked back at them, cold and level.

"I'm laughing because you're all idiots."

"Nolan, what are you going to do next?"In the car, I watched the scenery slide past outside the window."What else is there to do?" Nolan kept one hand loose on the wheel, his tone offhand."Everything that needed handling has been handled. Jamie and Melanie are facing charges for stealing an aircraft, endangering public safety, and malicious prosecution. The evidence is solid. That'll keep them locked up for a few years."As for Brett, I gave him a scare. He'll keep his head down from here on out.""And that's it? It's over?""Over?" Nolan let out a quiet laugh, cold at the edges. "This is just the start. Anyone who comes after my family needs to understand there's a price to pay. I'll take the Coopers' business apart slowly, piece by piece. As for the Stathams, that land in Southport is just the interest."I looked at the hard, determined line of his profile, and something warm settled in my chest.Having a brother like him really was something."Anyway." Nolan's tone shi

At the hospital, a doctor cleaned and treated the bruising on my arm. Nothing serious, just some surface damage.Nolan sat at the edge of my bed, peeling an apple. The skin came off in one long, unbroken ribbon."Nolan, did you already know?"I watched his steady, practiced hands and couldn't help but ask."The jet has a tracker on it. The alarm went off, so I got the alert." Nolan didn't look up, still focused on the apple. "I figured I'd see how far you could handle it on your own. I didn't expect that trash to actually go after you."There was a thread of irritation in his voice, aimed at himself, at his own oversight."I'm fine," I said, smiling."Honestly, I'm almost grateful to them. Otherwise I never would've found out what kind of person Jamie really is, or what kind of friend Melanie was."Nolan cut the peeled apple into pieces, speared one on a toothpick, and handed it to me."Keep your eyes open from now on. Garbage like that, once it touches you, you get rid of i

Nolan's question wasn't loud, but it carried more weight than a shout.Melanie was so terrified she nearly lost her mind, sobbing hysterically."It wasn't me! Mr. Morrison, it was Jamie! It was all his idea! "He said Elizabeth's family had money, that taking the blame wouldn't cost me anything, that we could even squeeze some cash out of it! "He said he liked me, he wanted to be with me, that I should let Elizabeth take the fall for everything. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, please spare me, please."Jamie's eyes went wide with fury."Melanie, don't you dare put this on me! This was your idea from the start! You're the one who lured me into it!""It was you!""No, it was you!"The two of them tore into each other all over again, spilling out every detail, how they'd plotted it together, how they'd coordinated on the plane, how they'd gotten their stories straight afterward, terrified that any delay would get them killed on the spot. The classmates around them stood frozen, listening

It wasn't even ten minutes before the roar of an engine sounded in the distance. Not a car. A helicopter.A black helicopter marked with the Morrison Group's logo touched down precisely on the open stretch of the beach, the wind from its rotors whipping so hard people had to shield their eyes. The door slid open, and four men in black tactical gear and sunglasses dropped down first, moving fast, spreading out to secure the area. Then a tall, sharply built figure stepped down unhurriedly after them.He wore a plain black shirt and black trousers, his features handsome and cold, sharing just enough resemblance with mine to mark him as family, but with an edge of authority and detachment that came from years of sitting at the top.It was my brother. Nolan. The instant he stepped off the helicopter, his eyes locked onto me, sweeping over me head to toe. When they landed on the bruise on my arm, something in his gaze went dark."Nolan," I called out to him.Nolan walked over, reach

The line went quiet for two seconds. Then came a low laugh, carrying a chill that cut straight through the bone."Brett? Roger Statham's useless younger son? The one who does nothing but eat, drink, and party?"Brett's face drained white in an instant. He recognized that voice. Nolan Morrison. The man who ran Southport's business world with an iron fist, the one even Brett's father had to address as "Mr. Morrison" with a nervous smile."Mr... Mr. Morrison?"The cigar slipped out of Brett's fingers and hit the sand. He didn't even notice the burn against his skin."Yes." Nolan's voice came through the phone, almost lazy in its calm. "What was that you just said to my sister? Something about dinner?"Brett's knees buckled. He nearly dropped to the ground on the spot, stammering."A misunderstanding! Mr. Morrison, this is all a huge misunderstanding! I didn't know she was your sister! I thought, I thought…""You thought a Morrison could be pushed around?" Nolan cut him off. "Br

The site manager's name was Shawn Forrest. He was a heavyset man with a big belly, and the second he opened his mouth it was nothing but veiled threats."This is private property. You took off without clearing it with us first, and that's a violation of our regulations."And that jet is a valuable piece of property. If we really pursued this, it wouldn't just be about paying for damages, it could be criminal liability."He leaned in close, lowering his voice, though not low enough that the people around us couldn't hear."Sweetheart, you look like you've had a soft, easy life. A stint behind bars isn't something to joke about."Everyone here knows how Brett operates. Go apologize, take him to dinner, smooth this whole thing over. It'll be better for everyone. Otherwise, I'll have to do this by the book, and we'll all just have to take a trip down to the police station."Melanie seized the opening to pile on."Shawn, don't blame Elizabeth, she's probably just too proud to back do
